Remember toy fads like pogs and silly bandz? The ’60s version was Snake and Mongoose, two real life drag racers who got immortalized in diecast form by Mattel. Don “The Snake” Prudhomme and Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen were elite drag racers, but they also became pop culture icons as drag racing reached peak popularity. Who won more races? Why were people going so far as to get Snake and Mongoose tattoos? And how did they help put Hot Wheels on the map? All that and more, on today’s Past Gas!
►LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE!

So glad you guys did this. When I was about 10, I went to Heartland Park and got to see Prudhomme race. Went down into the pits and one of his crew members gave me one of the pistons straight out of the engine. It didn’t seem like much to me at the time and I’m sure I came of unappreciative, but it sure means a lot to me now. Still have the piston!

That's pretty cool man I used to know Butch Blair when I was a kid if you're familiar with him used to sit in all his dragsters at his house and stuff he used to have a 50 gallon barrel filled to the top with melted pistons and bent rods from all the engines he went through when he was competing I had a bent Venolia aluminum rod but have lost it since then

I used to work security at Brainerd International Raceway. When nationals were in town, I was posted in the puts and starting line. We would wear ear plugs, ear muffs, and pad the space in-between with cotton balls, and we still had to rotate out every 2-3 launches or risk going deaf. But like Nolan said, it literally steals your breath away when they launch. You also couldn't see straight due to the massive turbulence and vibration from those engines.. Amazing experience.

"Big Daddy" Don Garlits is the man that designed rear engine dragsters as we know it. He was piloting a front engine dragster and his flywheel blew apart and took off part of his right foot. He designed the rear engine to be more safe and it was adopted as the standard. The original funny cars spawned from the Pro Stock cars. As you said the Dodge boys were experimenting and they moved the front and rear wheels forward for better weight distribution. They were altered wheel base cars and people thought they looked funny. The name stuck. They also called them AFX cars. Solid vid guys.

55:30 Sure Pusha-T has been famous for a long time, but he and his brother were kicked out by their parents for selling drugs. Plus, the real reason Clipse broke up was that they were caught running a cocaine ring while on tour with their manager who got 32 years in prison. But I guess that's only cool when racing teams do it? At least Pusha isn't perving on underage girls.
