Today we discuss bubble nesting fish. the fish that spawn above the water. these amazing fish use their own saliva and some basic physics of water and surface tension to raise their eggs up to an inch above the surface of the water, to avoid predators and ensure that their babies survive at rates far above those that scatter eggs.
What is a bubble nest? Why do bettas, gouramis and paradise fish make these adorable nests? and what special care should be given to them when breeding for profit or fun alike. thanks for tuning in, cheers!

Romeo Casanova looks like he's taking to his new lady friend very well 🥰 It is so interesting to watch bubble nesting ♥️ The males are just incredible the way they take care of the eggs and the babies 🙏 Truly cool stuff Alex!! I can't wait for the day that I can breed some bettas, for now though I don't know if I have the room for hundreds of jars 🤣 and finding somewhere for them to go 🤣 These albino paradise fish are just a beautiful pair 🙏 Thank you always for sharing and teaching us along the way 🙏🌿🐟🌿💚🥰

Ooooh, so exciting! I didn’t realise they had such frequent clutches of eggs. Is this seasonal? And one of my most favourite fish is the Sparkling Gourami … I have to replace a tank that developed a major leak, and am going to get lots of them. Another great video Alex 💖
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 жыл бұрын
So if you leave the tank unheated, then their spawning is seasonal and the female goes in "heat", where every 4 to 10 days she can spawn, depending on protein in her diet. It is key to have a humid environment over the water surface, but a drop to 70 degrees or 72 Fahrenheit seems to trigger this in the fall (spring in the Southern hemisphere). But in a heated tank they will sporadically spawn monthly or every other month, from my observations. Thanks for tuning in and dropping a line. Cheers!

So in the book we have by Peter Hiscock.. he mentions using heating cables with sand as a bottom layer to promote convection like plants have in nature. Have you tried this or know of anyone that has? I'd love to give it a shot.

Thanks for the info. My honey gouramis have started breeding and I was worried about getting the right food for the fry. I’ve separated them from the parents into a heavily planted tank that just has shrimp. I see little shiny eyes here and there and 1 week later the parents are at it again! Another clutch.

@@Fishtory Definitely. I’m in OZ and spring is definitely in the air! Our seasonal humidity is also back. Think this might have contributed to the behaviour.

When spawning i usually change 20% a week...or 50% once then 10% a week for several weeks. But other than that, i just top off my tanks with my soft local water

I'd really like my Sparkling Gourami to breed but they're in a community tank and I don't think the water is right for it. 7.6pH and tds at 280ish.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 жыл бұрын
If you have enough plants and leave the water about 2 inches lower than the rim and like 80 degrees (or whatever keeps the air right above the surface humid) you can probably still have luck! I've done so in similar conditions, but you'll need to add a few almond leaves and then have a TON of fine leaf floating plants or tall stem plants that sit at the surface of the water. Good luck!

Great video, I really enjoyed it. I am trying to breed some Sparkling Gouramis, but I just can't get them to breed. I have had them for almost 1 year and I have identified 2 males and 1 female. The female also appears to have her ovipositor sticking outwards. Any tips? thanks :)
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'd add some boiled leaf litter to the bottom of the tank (a few layers of it, gradually. Make sure the acidity doesn't crash to below 6 or so ideally) then make sure you have very fine leaf plants that are growing from floor to the top of the water...and floating a bit, so it's a "nest" of small leafs...rotalas, limnophelia, mattengrossen or cabomba are great...or even floating some hornwart too. Then make sure they're the only fish in the tank and feed in the front of the tank live or frozen food as much as possible. Good luck!

Question for you, how do you feel about having a betta fish (fancy kind) in guppy tanks? That creates like a "predator" I only had 1 betta fish be too aggressive and go after the big adults and I removed them but do you think this would help the guppies ir are guppies just too far removed from the wild the predator factor wouldn't help them?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 жыл бұрын
Um I keep them together frequently...but the babies will get eaten (both species unless you have some dense naja grass or moss for them to grow up in). If you have a 20 Gallon or larger I'd say you should go for it...if its a smaller tank, then pick which fish species you don't want breeding and act accordingly lol. I've found that fancy guppies get beat up way more, just because their big fins make them slow, then on top of that they are 24/7 preoccupied by food or mating and will literally dance like a fishing lure in front of a grumpy betta fish lol.
