Today, by popular demand, we're going to look at how I customized my Plasma desktop: panels, docks, themes, window controls, icons, widgets, login screen... It's probably nothing too crazy compared to other user's setups, but it's mine, and I'm proud of it.

00:00 Intro
01:40 Theme
04:20 Widgets
04:46 Layout
08:54 Final Details
I moved to a theme called layan, it's a Kvantum theme. Layan has a GTK variant.
To install it, click the "Configure GNOME / GTK application styles" in the Application Style panel, then "Get new GNOME- GTK Application styles". Search for Layan, and click "install".
For the icons, I use the "Inverse-blue-dark" icons, which you can get from the "Get new icons" button.
The plasma theme is also the "Layan" theme, you can get it from the "Get new plasma styles" button.
The window decorations I use are called Layan. You can get them from the "'Get New Window decorations".
The widgets I use are called "Window title applet", "Latte separator", "Better Inline clock", and "latte spacer".
I have a top bar with a global menu, and a dock to run and manage running apps. I don't use the regular Plasma panels to get that result, though, I use latte dock.
Latte can import layouts: Then, right click on the dock, and select "Edit dock", then right click on it again, and select "Layouts - edit layouts". Here, you have an "Import" button, select "Import from local file" and go select my layout.
If you'd prefer to see each tweak I made, here we go:
- The main dock, I haven't changed much. I removed every applet there that wasn't latte tasks, and every separator.
In the Appearance settings, I set an absolute size of 48, disabled zoom on hover. I added a 10% margin, with 15% thickness, and added 8px between the dock and the screen edge.
The background is 50% opaque, with a 34% radius and 29px shadow. I also enabled blur and shadows.
Now, for the top panel.
- Right click on the dock, and select "edit dock", then right click again and select "Ad dock / panel", then "Empty panel"
In that panel, I added the following widgets:
- Application launcher: I configured the applet by changing its icon, I used the draw-circle icon that's available from the "All" icons drop down menu.
- Window Title widget. I configured it to only display the application name, and not to show the icon. The name is written in bold.
- Latte separator, and the global menu
- I then added a latte spacer, followed by the better inline clock widget. I configured it to have a font size of 16px, and show the date and separator, using a 24h clock.
- Finally, there's another latte spacer and finally, the system tray widget from the base Plasma desktop.
Having both latte spacers use the setting "fill available space" makes the clock centered.
In terms of how the panel is laid out, I set it to appear on the top edge, and checked the "Hide floating gap for maximized windows" box.
In the Appearance tab, I set it to be 28px, with a max length of 98% so it doesn't extent to the full length of the display. I added an 8px gap from the screen edge, and no margins at all on the panel.
It's 50% opaque, with blur and shadows enabled, and has a 34% radius, with 29px shadows. I didn't change the Effects tab, but here it is just in case.

I wasn't using Latte because I wanted "floating" top bar but thought they would stay that way with maximized applications! I didn't knew there was an option to clear the spacing when maximizing, thank you for this tip!
@Speykious
@Speykious 2 жыл бұрын
I had used that previously, but every time it had to adapt to a maximized window - which happened quite often given that I switch between workspaces a lot - it had a lag spike and I really didn't like that. Now that I'm on a more powerful laptop though it would probably handle it fine, but I got used to the default one and I guess I'm just satisfied with it.

I've always hated docks because they take up too much vertical screen space, but I also don't like auto-hide and would rather have a persistent panel. But guess what? Linux is all about customization and finding the workflow that is best for you! I'm using a tiling KWin script, and I only have a single panel on top that functions as a global menu instead of a task manager, among other things.

Do you know what I really like when switching to the kvantum Layan theme, are the separators, not the KDE widget you mention, but actual separators, the horizontal lines separating items in dialogues and menus. In the breeze application style separators are very intrusive lines, there are also lines around buttons, which emphasises clutter. Kvantum Layan solves all that for me, no more lines, and IMO it now looks soooo much better and tidier. Thanks for bringing this theme to my attention. I am a happy camper :) I think I am now completely satisfied with the look of KDE, which I wasn't before, never quite 100%. Now it's there.

Every time you upload a video for your system and demonstrate Latte, you really make me happy 😊. One small comment, for your top latte panel, the latte spacers to center your inline clock are not needed. You are using Justify alignment that by default and automatically adds and uses the Justify splitters. If you remove the two latte spacers that are filling area you are still going to have a perfectly centered inline clock. The spacers to center things is a plasma panel idea and not a Latte one. 🙂 Latte is just clever enough to handle also that scenario.

One of the major drawbacks of these custom themes (or the kde theme engine I suppose) is that it does not support automatic HDPI scaling. I plug my laptop to a monitor which has 100% scaling and I have to change the custom theme to a 100% variant. And when I use laptop, I have to manually switch to 150% variant and this is too much frustrating. also I need to log in and logout SDDM once for scaling to take effect. Also only a few theme makers provide 125x and 150x scaled themes in the bundle like 'whitesur by vinceliuice'.

Just saw the video... I told myself I would stop tweaking the look and feel of my installation but I just might give it a go... And maybe find an equivalent in a light theme... i kinda' embraced the light lately... Or maybe I just didn't find the dark theme that looks really really good on my monitors... Or maybe I'm stuck in the past and still miss that Glass/Aero look from Vista/Windows 7.... Oh well, enough rambling! Great video!

You should see my "customizations". I literally just move the panel to the top, that's it, no themes or anything else, just the good ole default breeze theme. Best set up ever. 😂

I wonder do you use a Wayland session. I have tested it with every release of KDE and now more stuff works for me in Wayland then X11. It seems to be performing much better as well on my Lenovo laptop.

Wayland has much less latency than x11 on every setup I used it. This is because there are fewer steps to generate the image

Thanks so much for this! Quick tip: if it's not a normal English word (and especially if you're not sure how it's pronounced, like these theme names) please just put the text of the name on the screen somewhere. Pretty impossible to search for otherwise.

You have done a tremendous job here Nick, congratulations👍. I've been prepping my KDE config in preparation for Fedora 35. I was close. Similar look to what you have, but I missed the Layan kvantum variant. It looks so good, that's got to be the final straw for me. You have me bought. Bye bye GNOME. back to KDE (I used it back in the day long ago). I am excited.😁 How have you found the overall stability? KDE apps have a habit of crashing I notice, especially when configuring them Let me put this way. I've had something crash within hours of use. I do need to use it for the full working week without dramas. GNOME has served me well in that regard. Cheers.

Thanks a lot! It’s been very stable for me, I didn’t have an issue for about a year now.

@@TheLinuxEXP Thx It could be because all my prepping was done in a VM, so when I come to install it on real metal I know exactly what to do.

Very cool.... I've see the option in the Kvantum panel to have Dolphin alfa enabled, but there was some OpenGl to reload! :D

Great Video, however after doing everything exactly the same i don't really have the same "transparent" effect on both dock, and top panel(grayish color, when using any application and transparent when on desktop. I'd say outside desktop nothing is "transparent".

I don't blame you with the Mac OS layout. I'll probably be copying it myself mostly because I like the global menu. 😅 Sweet Plasma!

I'm facing a problem within the global menu widget 😔. when a menu in big (eg the menus in libre office),the top part of the drop down menu covers the top bar and the global menu. it's ok. but when i try to select something on the drop-down menu that is covering the top bar, the global menu option, that is behind the drop-down menu, gets selected.
