Ironically, I was in an awful art slump while I was working on this video (How fitting that it was during a tutorial video HAHA) so this was supposed to be finished weeks ago, but I was struggling like crazy to be happy with anything I drew. I'm feeling much better now luckily ^^ It happens to all of us, and while I still need to teach myself not to feel guilty when I have a few days off to recollect myself, I'm very grateful that my audience is always reminding me that it's okay to take a little longer if I need to T___T Thank you!!

When the combination cry face shows, it hits real hard. The power of combining Shounen and Shoujo manga crying face is too powerful. Also, I actually learn a lot, especially about how artists depict character's personality through different expression for the same emotion/state of mind.

the way you draw emotions has always been something i admire about your style, you have a real skill for conveying emotions simply with the face of a cartoon, i'm not very good at that myself, so it's nice to get tips from someone who's so good at it!

Ok, that eyebrow example was shocking, the faces really looked completely different 🦇

I like it how Emirichu is not saying “this is what you need to do”, “these are the rules to doing this”, or “you need to do this a specific/certain way.” No Emirichu is not saying any of this, she is just giving us some advice to making more expressions, and telling us a bit how she draws, and that we shouldn’t do something thing like everyone else does, but that we should use other people’s style/ how they do their things so that we may get an idea on how we should it ourselves.

Hi Emily! Thank you so so so so so much for making this. I actually use your drawings as inspiration, and I love your videos so much. I remember that video that you made about you being a teacher, and you met a couple of kids who drew a lot. I actually wanted to use you as inspiration because of your amazing drawing skills. Ever since I discovered your channel, I thought I discovered a whole new world of drawing. Now, before I found your channel I always criticized my own drawings. Because my friends would draw so much better. Here are some of the stuff they would say “How about drawing the eyes the normal way?” Or “Ha, i’am so much more better.” It really hurt my feelings, because sometimes, my friends would call me “Crybaby” because I cry so much. And my parents would be embarrassed by telling me to. It just hurts… but drawing feels like therapy, it makes me feel so.. happy! Of course, I still compare. But, I draw as good as I can.

So what I got is, when the character is confused, mad or something that makes the character’s eyes look more closed is when the eyes should be drawn sharper and darker. Also what I got is that when the pupils look more dilated, the eyelashes are darker. In Emily’s way of drawing, pupil sizes, shapes and sharpness effects the emotions

I know I'm late but some art advise that I taught myself is eyelids. A wide eyed expression would have the eyelids more down and less visible while a calmer expression would have the eyelids more above the eye. (I hope this make sence)

Expressions is something I've been trying to practice a lot as of recently so this was a HUGE help!! Your art style is so adorable and watching this video gives me so much motivation! Cant wait for more of these!!

Theres alot of videos on KZfaq plus article online but they teach us and tell us emotions and expression not how to draw them, for example they would teach us expression like happy, joyfull , exited , mindblown etc they would explain when and why these expression occur and would tell us to practice taking reference from anime sheets, but your videos actually explains how to draw these expressions, everyone know youll be smiling when your happy but the way you point out eyebrows, eyes shape and mouth was way way different and helpful. And i tried making a sheet of expression but my face was straight and it looked dull so thanks to you , i can follow your sheet and draw my character! Who else agress

holy hell, one year later and this video is still the best video i've found on youtube about this subject! and im new to Emirichu so thats saying something!

what i notice in mangas (mostly anime) the hair gives a bit of expression too! like if the character is sad, the hair becomes flat and droopy alittle, without losing the initial shape, and if they are happy it starts to bounce, and become really lively! thats just what i notice XD

Something you said in this video is honestly one of the biggest things that I dont see a lot of artists really say and that's the whole "look at how other sets of media does theirs" most of how I figured out art was due to me seeing one of my favorite artists making something neat and I go "damn I really like how they draw eyes" or "wow the way they can draw expressions" and try to mimic it. I know copying 1:1 ain't cool but trying to mimic in your own way is a neat thing to try and do to learn how to do so in your own way.

ngl this helped my face expressions a lot, usually with expressions (for example im making a super happy face) i just make the eyes a big bigger but it never gets any better, ty for the helpful guide!

I know its been 2 years and we aren’t likely getting more Emi tutorials. But this helped me a lot! I absolutely adore and admire your art style and i also have a ton of inspiration from anime and manga for wanting to start doing art! Faces has always been a week point and years ago I gave up because I became discouraged because at the time I didn’t have any sort of artistic inspiration or any particular art style I wanted to emulate, plus I was always given the impression that “copying” other artists styles was a bad thing when, much like you said, finding your style isn’t a journey you start from nothing.

I would really love the idea if you made a speedpaint on how you draw your own animation or anything! Because i really love the way you draw!

DO MORE OF THESE!!!! Do a different hairstyles one in your style if you can!

Some extra tips that I've heard: 1. Looking up references of actual human faces also helps if you wanna work on where everything is placed and how different parts of the face react to each other. 2. If you have an idea specific way a character looks, make style guide and take notes on how you want everything to look. This helps with keeping everything consistent.

I love your art style! Just a quick thought: When I make expressions, I never use my eyebrows when I talk, and I started drawing my characters to do the same thing, focusing on their eyes instead of eyebrows. Then you mentioned that eyebrows make them so much more expressive, and you are right. I am now wondering if I should start doing eyebrows that move a lot, but I feel like it is not my art style... At least I feel like my serious characters should stick to the no eyebrow animation. All other characters will now be much more expressive with their eyebrows now. Thank you!
