Didn't you hear Lupita? I'm a Nigerian and love both these women however, a part of me felt disappointed at the fact that Chimmamanda had to wait for the west to acknowledge Lupita first (12 years of slave) to be good enough for her response. Truth is often a hard pill to swallow.

I loved Americanah as well and felt like I knew every character personally even though I lived all my life is South Africa. I can't wait to see the characters portrayed. Chimamanda is the mistro of telling African stories, specifically Igbo stories. I enjoyed reading Igbo words and pretending to be part of the culture. Seeing her in Johannesburg was the best thing ever. Her honesty about how unfriendly we are as South Africans made me wanna go on stage to hug her for saying it. We could do better much better to appreciate one another as Africans. I was emotional because our ignorance about each other and our lack of curiosity about each other is my pet peeve. I love the grace of the people at the table embracing Lupita and not seeming angry that she is not a Nigerian telling A Nigerian story. She is an actress with the requisite skills and the desire to embody a particular character. Thank you Nigeria and thank you Chimamanda. I would like to teach Lupita isiXhosa in preparation for Born a Crime, the Trevor Noah story. I'm a stickler for the correct Xhosa accent and it's nuances. I can teach that we'll too.

I’ve not read Americanah, but I read Adichie’s book ‘Purple Hibiscus’ as I did it for my GCSEs, and I really loved it. The themes of structured, monotheistic religion vs paganism/tribalism, the misogyny and sexism, the way she discusses the violence, all in the context of the war/government in Nigeria, I just loved reading about something different (as a British Pakistani).
