This week in the patch i am adding my first side dressing of fertilizer to my broccoli and cauliflower. I will also be hilling the soil around the base of the broccoli plants to keep them supported against the strong winds as they grow. I have started my second round of broccoli and cabbage seedings.

Thanks for the info on the brassica seedlings. I am starting my seedlings earlier after watching your posts and vids. In Adelaide and the broccoli will go in the ground in the next 2 weeks. Very unusual weather this season.

Well done 👍 it was a bit hot here in Sydney so they needed a bit of shade but they have settled in now so they are good to run on their own. If you have the space I would get some second and third plantings in that way you get a steady harvest all through the season.

Looks good, I just started mine a week ago, so I am glad to see that you are confident growing them now…I am in northern nsw and I was worried about the heat with the seedlings, but so far so good, thanks for sharing

In your area I would look at planting warm season varieties of brassicas. The broccoli variety Aurora is a variety they plant in SE QLD so it is good for your area. There are warm season caulies and cabbages also. I found the varieties I grow are slow to bolt and can handle the heat

Hey Anthony, would love a video on your seed raising tips. I really struggle finding a seed raising mix that is good quality in Australia.

I will share the brand I am using in the next video. It’s not a brand you can get from Bunnings but you should be able to find it at nurseries. They have changed the mix recently with a little more bark in it but it’s still usable. I’m raising new seedlings so I will share these in videos coming up

Hi Anthony, your brassicas are looking good especially for this time of year. Living in Qld (subtropics) I have always mulched my garden as we get a lot of diseases, but I got tired of moving the mulch around every time I wanted to do anything so for the last 12 months, I have been doing the same as you and have found that I actually have less problems, hopefully this will continue in the future. I love it that you tell us what you feed and spray it really helps a lot, thanks Jacqui

Thanks jacqui. I personally don’t like to spend money where I don’t need too and I personally don’t find the value in adding mulch o find it gets in the way harbours slugs and pests and I can water or add fertilisier easily with it around. I find closer plant spacings so the plants shade the soil and agitating the soil to form a soil mulch works the best glad it’s working for you 👍

Interesting conversation about mulch. I heavily mulch my veg garden in the autumn with shredded leaves 150 to 200mm thick. I think it's the shredding that makes the difference. They break down quicker and as it's a thick layer it suppresses the weeds. In addition it feeds the soil and helps minimise watering. Loose leaves on a bed is slug habitat, you can do without more hiding places for slugs.

Thanks Anthony for getting back to me, I totally agree with you we only have sugar cane here and it can be quite expensive.

@@Charles00-xj3kz Oh to have some good leaf mulch unfortunately the only leaves we have here are eucalyptus and I wouldn't put those around my garden.

@@mudmaker2133 yes I agree. No to eucalyptus leaves. You can use grass clippings. Pack them in a 220litre drum and fill with water. Let them drown for two weeks. They will smell somewhat. This will kill the grass seeds. Apply to veg garden. I do this to all my weeds, though with weeds I brew for 4 weeks.. You end up with weed tea as a by product which you can dilute and fertilize with. It gets better with age and the more weeds you put through.

Great content Anthony! I'm in the North East US, 2 hours north east of Manhattan. We've still got snow on ground and will until probably mid April. I'm starting seeds for brassicas this week to get them out into the garden for the last week of April... do you have any tips or tricks? Have you already made a video about this topic?

I do have a seedling video early on but the key I find is for good seedlings is as much sunlight as you can give them once they germinate. In your area putting the outdoors in the sun might be hard with the cold weather but this is what I find is key. Also giving them no water till they germinate then watering from below with some weak fertilisier solution until the are ready to plant out

Great video Anthony. You seem to favor soaker hoses for irrigation. Do you have lots of them or do you just move a couple round the garden?

Thanks Charles I have installed 50m soaker hoses all around my patch that I move around to the plants as I plant new crops out I probably have 5 50 metre hoses in total. The brand I bought is the nylex from Bunnings. They do well to give a deep soak for the plants but if you don’t have your bed fully planted out you do waste a bit of water watering bare soil. Works for me at the moment but thinking of making some changes

Hi Anthony, I’m new to your channel I’m so happy to find someone who grows in Sydney. Could I ask you what the name of the insect spray you used on you broccoli Thank you 😊

I use pyrethrum but the name brand variety I bought is ambush. This is a bulk buy commercial grade bottle that you can get from produce stores. You can buy pyrethrum in Bunnings and it will work just the same. Just look for the active ingredients
