Hey Anthony, thanks for this video - so envious about your caulis (and brassicas generally). Question: how many chooks do you have and how large is their enclosure?

@sydneybackyardveggies9612

Thanks. The key with caulies is that you need to try to plant them early in the season so that they still can take advantage of the warmth in the soils. In Sydney the soil can stay pretty warm up to late May but cools fast once June comes past. If you plant early enough the plants would put enough size so that they can mature in the cold weather

These ones I planted they took 3 months. Mum came back and told me that the plants were too large and that she wants them picked smaller so I will look at turning over the second planting in 8 weeks. It comes down to how warm the soils are. Now we are in the middle of winter the garden really slows but generally 8 weeks

Interesting observation about the winter solstice. Mizuna I started in late summer has started to bolt but lettuces started at the same time have not. Guess some are more sensitive to the day length than others.
@sydneybackyardveggies9612
@sydneybackyardveggies9612 2 күн бұрын
Yeah some plants are impacted more than others. My old man keeps telling me that parsley planted in late spring will only bolt once we move to September. Likewise parsley planted in March April will bolt at the same time. With my rocket I find it’s the same case if I plant a late round now they will bolt straight away. As you have said different varieties and plants have different tolerant to daylight changes

Hey Anthony, I recommend something like coffee chaff (it's the husks of the roasted coffee bean) as an 'entry mat' for the chooks to the nesting space. You can get them from a local roaster by the boxful (given how us Sydneysiders go through coffee), and they're light and fluffy and smell of caramel, and will brush some of the dirt off the chook feet and cushions the eggs. They may stick a little to the eggs, but it's not dirty!

Hi Anthony, your cabbages look amazing and hopefully eggs wont go up much in price. Yeah I saw that forecast. I haven’t had to water the garden in the last month. Don’t mind the rain as long as it isn’t pelting rain over a short period it floods the patch. Need to learn how to grow flowers it is not my strong point. It would look amazing once they all bloom in spring

@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 Yes looks fantastic. I use mostly the same principles with flowers as with vegies. A little more phosphorous and a little less nitrogen. Marigold seed sown in spring and planted in the vegie garden especially around tomatoes and capsicum help deter fruit fly as they don't like the smell and brighten the garden up. Cheers

@sydneybackyardveggies9612
@sydneybackyardveggies9612 16 күн бұрын
Hi the soil in my main patch was essentially lawn that the previous owner had put down weed mat and spread a lot of top soil and then laid grass. When I started the patch I removed the grass and the weed mat and then added 2 tonnes of mushroom compost to the bed to add organic material to the top soil. I have been planting in this bed over the last 6 years and before every planting I have added a couple bags of cow manure to the soil and over time it slowly builds up. Over the past year I have been looking at saving money in my patch so I have been collecting free horse manure and composting it will garden waste and my chicken run waste. I will put close to 2 cubic metres of compost over my bed a year so it is doing well. I also strategically fertilise my plants throughout the season and I am trying to fine tune that. With the rain it’s been a struggle eapecially with the slugs. I am starting to see some powdery mildew on my broccoli which I have never seen before. The cold and wet does make your plants struggle especially the winter greens but you need to make sure you have planted your winter crops in March April so they have time to grow big before the cold sets
