How i fit doors and how much I made for these two doors

Hello and thank you for watching this video.
here I have put together a hopefully helpfull edit on the process in which I fit my doors , although this took me 2 days to Edit it is only a 10minute video if you would like a full in depth guide on how I fit my doors please let me know in the comments.

One bit of advice from someone 30+ years in the trade. I dont wear my rig when 2nd fixing as its too bulky and you can easily mark walls, the door when carrying. I just use my pouches on my trousers and stay light.

Yep. I don't even wear it fitting kitchens. Cost me way too much once. Bit of carpet on the floor and all your gears laid out nice.... Untill it gets messed up and you can't find your pilot bit 🤣 ahhhh mag trays, also a good thing 👍

I have been a joiner for 42yrs I feel undressed without my belt etc I get that it can mark the maternity I couldn't start without it

Great work. Tip if you don't mind me saying. To measure point to point. Measure out 100mm. Pencil mark. Measure to pencil mark plus the 100mm will get you the exact distance to the exact mm vs bending tape in the corner. Can't read a bent tape jammed in corners very well. Something I learnt some time ago.😀

a tip i’ve recently figured out is to trim round the hindge/latch plate with a stanley before chiselling it out, helps not split the frame and get a nice perfect edge

I rely on a couple of pre tape measure methods when fitting doors or anything into a bay/aperture where a tight fit is required. First is to transfer your measurements by using a rod. ie a suitable length of timber to transfer cutting marks from a to b ,, perfect for hinges. (Introduce a shim on the frame) The second is a width ‘gauge’ which is simply 2 square ended rods both 2 feet long held together on their sides slid out to meet the jambs and marked with your pencil at any point. Very accurate.

a couple of tips i have found after many years experience, 50,first thing i do is patch the existing keep then you have fresh timber to chop into and take the screws ,use 100mm hinges and they will cover the existing75 mm hinge and give you fresh holes to take screws,use masking tape on the inside face of the doors(NO PENCIL MARKS TO RUB OFF) and never stand cordless dills on the battery at some point they get pushed over and chip laminate flooring this happened on my brothers house after laying new floor and after i told him not to stand the drill on its end,hope this is helpful

If you can find a larger keep than the existing so you can lose the old one completely.

If you use a 4" hinge on an internal door it leaves you with about 3mm left of timber behind the hinge?You dont use 4" hinges on internal doors

When i do more than one door into new frames i use a staff to mark my hinges on doors and frames it makes everyone of them the same quicker and easyer

Nice job. I'd add in to first check that the frames are plumb, especially the hinge side. If the hinge side is off-plumb the door will swing either close or open by itself and no doubt when the new door is hung and also does that, the home owner will no doubt tell you the old door never did that🙄🙄

Make sure the hinge side is straight and the head is square then plane the closing edge in situe.

I’ve just stumbled across this channel. Love it. I was a carpenter for almost 30 years before becoming a locksmith so I enjoy these types of videos. You do a good job and can tell you enjoy it along with the apprentice 😁And your subscriber count is great……another one here 🙋🏻‍♂️ I do think that you’re selling yourself a bit cheap with door hanging though? I used to charge £80 labour per standard internal door but you charge what you feel comfortable 😁

So I’ve been a joiner nearly 20 year. Just a few tips take them or not but I always like to help ppl. Everyone has there own ways which I respect. 1 don’t ever Bend your tape into openings always measure across the face. Couldn’t tell if you were using a hinge jog with your router but there a life saver especially with hardwood doors. Also oak doors like that are veneered so putting a chisel under it s risky purchase yourself a pair in Winn airbags to lift your door when marking height. But overall your work is neat 👍🏻 not that you need my approval.

Look at getting some winbags so you don't damage a veneer or oak doors with chisels or crowbars to prop the door up. They're so much better. Just a heads up 👍🏻

Old fashioned way was to always cloak the room. Similar theme, light pendants always used to be closer to the window rather than central. Reason being to avoid shadows on the curtains particularly in bedrooms

Hanging side first, clapping side next, then fit head,offer door up and mark hinges, remember to put a leading edge on the clapping side,take of all arris's around the edges and ensure handles are level.....they don't stick then when you pull the handle down (I saw you)😄😄😄

Good stuff mate, I always used to use a marking guage to scribe mark out the edges of hinges and latches for my chisel cuts to help stop wood splitting, is that too old school these days?

Im not a carpenter but ive hung a lot of doors. I might be telling you how to suck eggs here so take no notice if i am lol On doors with a pattern that will make it obvios is the doors slanted i check the frame first with a spirit level.. Hard to explain but a door can look like it fits but the frames slanted both sides so the door pattern messes with your eyes. By checking with a level you know which side needs an angle planing into it. And my other tip... Take the door outside to do the latch.. Clamp a piece of wood either side when you chisel the outline and drill the hole... Learned that 1 the hard way when i drilled an oak veneer early on with an auger bit and it split the dam door. Other than that.. If it fits properly with a nice even gap the route you took to get there worked. 👍

Hi mate, I've got a bit of advise from a much older chipie. Ditch the pouch and hammer loop. I know it is very handy to have everything to hand, but in later life you'll regret it. Or at least have a smaller pick on the opposite side to your hammer. Trust me.

You need to get some airbags they help fitting doors. Get a pair so you can level the door easily. Also l9ve your honesty. Keep it up.

Hi mate, just wanted to say i love your videos. They are really inspiring for me personally as i am 19 right now and just about to finish my first year level 1 carpentry & joinery course at college. i want to be self employed doing similar stuff to yourself in the coming years. I was wondering what your advice would be for me. Should i do level 2 at college, try to do an apprenticeship or my tutor has recommended t levels, what are your thoughts?.

The best way to do any trade is getting first hand experience on jobs asap you’ll Learn quicker and the tricks they won’t show in college try get on a nvq level 2 if you can, good luck

@@akfisher7138 i didn’t notice any chips on door maybe pencil mark but on one of the frames it did chip as i was taking out the latch because the frame was already split a little bit so i did have to fill this

Remember doing these kind of jobs at your age with a Yankee and brace and bits. Wrong size latch on oak doors not in centre. Take it client bought them.

Why not have them open to the wall. That way prevents binding the hinges on the frame.

you butchered the cut outs for the lock a bit, initially you should invert them and then fix them to the door/frame with the 2 screws, then, either use a stanley knife to mark outline, or get a chisel and market outline close to the lock. Once you got your outline, remove lock, and carry on chiseling it out. I always fix the lock to the door first, then outline it with chisel, its way more accurate than a pencil. Yea it takes longer, but its worth it. Same with hinges, screw them on first, then use chisel to make outline of the hinge, remove hinge, then chisel out.

A wooden mallet is the correct tool to use with any chisel never a hammer. Allso never have I seen in my 46 years of been a cabinet maker a man with so many tools on his belt most never used even batman never carried so many tools on his belt.

3hrs to fit the doors. Is £43ph sounds good. Half an hour to drive to supplier to get doors, half an hour picking them up loading and paying, half an hour driving to customers and u loading, half an hour to get set up ready to hang doors, plus 3hours to fit doors and half an hour to pack away and half an hour to get home. Plus half an hour for a cup of tea or 2 with customer, plus half an hour chit chat with customer. Grand total of 7hrs ~£130/7 =£18.50ph Minus some diesel minus a bit of tax, we’re down to below £15ph. I’m not snubbing you. I’m a joiner it’s hard work. Customers only seem to take into account the time spent on there property, but the bigger picture is you Probly spend more time working for the customer off site. Good luck to ya!

Why do you use a combi on all the screws. So easy to round them off with a combi drill.

Pre drilling and a combi with a clutch is much safer on screw heads than just wanging them in with an impact driver, especially if working with soft brass or stainless steel screws...

I prefer to use the snappy centre pilot bit in an impact. Perfect everytime and no risk of destroying a screw
