Advice from a HVAC engineer: You probably had 200 guys already comment, but you don’t want to hard connect a fume extraction to the exhaust, as the resistance in the duct will take away horsepower. Just have a funnel on the end of the duct and a stand to hold it a few inches away from the exhaust. Simply Google “exhaust at a dyno” and you’ll see what it looks like. HOWEVER, you then need a fan to create negative pressure so the fumes go into the funnel on the duct. This is where you need to size the fan. So, a 5L engine at 6000rpm is going to blow 250l/s of exhaust, but as the funnel is placed a few inches from the exhaust it will pull not just air from the car’s exhaust, but also room air from around the funnel, so you probably need a fan sucking at least double, thus 500l/s. But, we’re not done sizing the fan, as you have a “fan curve” which is flow (l/s) over resistance of static pressure (Pa), so you then need to calculate pressure loss of your duct. I don’t expect you have a “ductulator”, but if you did you’ll find you either need a very high static pressure fan that would be so powerful that its suction would collapse your duct, or you’ll realise that your 5” (or was it 4”) duct is undersized (as resistance at that velocity exponentially increases beyond 100Pa/m). So, to slow that air velocity you really need to upside the duct to a 8”, and the you have a more reasonable 15Pa/m (still high, but keep the duct to just a few meters). The fan will now make noise as well as the car, so if you add an 8” acoustic attenuator before and after the fan that will add around 50Pa each, and if you install and external grille, you’ll have an extra 30-50Pa. Tallying up the static resistance pressure for 5m of duct, attenuators and grille will be at least 225Pa… Thus, 500l/s @ 225Pa centrifugal fan (blower)

Take the rollers out of that dyno and ask a machine shop to put a good quality knurl on them, that will help tremendously with the grip as I noticed the rollers are smooth. The other piece of advice I have is to use double wall tubing on the section of the exhaust that goes through the wall. You do not want the heat from all that exhaust to set the wall on fire.

@Gingium they make inline duct fans that are designed to attach to the dryer ducting and pull air through the system. that plus a dryer vent cap with the auto closing baffles/ shutters would insure you don't get any critters crawling into your building, also as others have said, wrap the exhaust, and try to route it so you can put a cover over it to prevent burns. burning a foot or an arm is NOT a fun way to learn about a hot metal surface. I am so proud you guys are DIY'ing so successfully.

My old shop had an exhaust extraction system. First, you'll want to find some crush proof "exhaust hose", made specifically for this application. Price depends highly on the heat resistance you need for your application, and you can buy it in various diameters. Second, an effective extraction system needs a fan to actually pull the exhaust through the system. Something that pushes at least 300 CFM. If you have this, you won't need to worry about making the hose fit the tip of the car as it'll suck it straight out as long as it fits loosely over the exhaust tip. I imagine you could place a fan on the ground outside after the muffler with some form of ducting to it, so it doesn't matter how large it is, as long as it can withstand the temperature. You also might want to look into local laws for exhaust extraction to make sure you don't get hit with a fine for some reason.

i was gonna say, you need an extractor.. and you may want to look for a BIG one otherwise you will still have fumes in the garage. ask me how i know 🙂 been fiddling with his a lot when i got my first dyno. Also if you ''extend'' the exhaust like it is now this might affect how the engine performs wich is not ideal. Have to say very cool project and what a superb asset for the workshop, Having a dyno is one of the best things when doing car and bike modifications! Thumbs up!

Best thing to do is bury it. That's kinda hard to do when you don't own the building. I like how some shops position they dyno right behind a drive on ramp hoist. Makes it easy to get the car on the dyno. And you also now have a very useful drive on hoist. That's what I would be looking into. But it's also about space and money. Neither of which are none of my concern or anyone's else's for that matter. It only matters to one man.

That exhaust "pipe" is going to get pretty hot. Make sure to insulate it so it doesn't catch the wall OSB on fire. (and doesn't burn people as they walk past it). Probably a good idea to make it go up and over, just so it isn't in the way of people walking around.

For the exhaust here ya go (dyno tech from years back): - 1x Furnace Blower Fan (check grainger) - Old Muffler from Bulldozer or something similar (looks like a goofy chimney) from salvage yard. - 2-3x Flexible Exhaust sections connected to by hard pipe or stainless flex pipe. On the end that goes to the car exhaust, fabricate a the end of a Flexible exhaust to look like a Christmas tree holder with thumb screws., other end make flexible enough to rest most of it's weight on the ground free of debris or wires. On the wall side the I like to muffle (with the dozer/construction equip muffler) then put the fan after words to suck it thru and to reduce the heat fan sees and as post muffler of sort, finishing off with a "tractor cap" on the outside pipe.

I'd make sure you have some kind of spark arrestor coming out if that building since you're right next to your propane tank and fuel oil tank

Was that a Dino graph or Caleb’s best ever etch-a-sketch drawing? 😂 honestly I love Caleb’s approach to these projects, just buckle up and get it done! Inspiring 👍🏼👍🏼

I've seen dyno guys build dyno mufflers out of 200L (50gal?) oil barrels, insulation and perforated steel tubes. You should also use 5" or 6" exhaust with a fan on the outside, to always suck the exhaust out. Do not use the exact diameter junction to the car, just let it suck excess air, and it will cool the tubing/diy muffler.

You should really add some gussets to those ramp holders, that's a lot of shear force to put in a very small area and it would suck to have one snap off while you're backing a car up the ramp.

Add a fan to create section and increase the efficiency it gets pulled out. With no fan you maybe restricting power I think too

Not too sure but won’t the new exhaust increase back pressure and alter the numbers you get when tuning? Just a thought. Anyways, this is dope! Once you get this dialed in you won’t be stressin about scheduling dyno sessions. Hype!

Id do a couple tests to see if the dyno exhaust causes power loss, id guarantee it does after a certain hp mark, check out engine masters, id guess youd see loss a little over 500hp, 500hp is around the same power level where you notice hp changes going to a 3" exhaust, typing this i wouldn't be suprised if they've done more accurate testing... shop is coming along sick!
