How I Got a Job in NASCAR with ZERO Experience

A few months ago, I reached out to NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Brad Perez with one question: “Can I be your NASCAR spotter at Circuit of The Americas?” Brad needed at least three spotters to navigate COTA, a 3.41-mile road course that also hosts MotoGP and F1, but my only “experience” was that I watch a lot of NASCAR racing and have a KZfaq channel.
He responded: “I ain’t scared.”
So began our work together as NASCAR colleagues. NASCAR spotters find a high spot on a racetrack to follow what’s going on behind, beside, and in front of a race car, sometimes coaching their driver through a pass while describing the location and severity of wrecks around them. They do all of this while using as few words as possible to not distract the driver.
I prepared for spotting Brad’s COTA race in a number of ways, including by downloading the team scanner audio from Tyler Reddick’s 2023 Cup Series victory. I then watching it back alongside the race broadcast, noting what his spotters did and didn’t call for three hours on the roof.
I spotted from Turn 12, COTA’s infamously harsh braking zone. When the drivers entered my section, I could barely see them. Through practice, qualifying, and the race, my mouth was dry and I swayed nervously at the hips. I wanted to do well for Brad - and I did!
Our goal was to finish top-20, and we got P18. On our budget (and Brad’s part-time schedule), it felt like we won. I hope you feel that way too.

This was great! So happy you had that experience and that Brad got his best ever finish! Congrats to all! Not a huge follower of NASCAR up to now but Brad and Parker where so funny! Love the fact that your husband's name is now officially "Alanis' Husband", said so during a race so it's official now. LOVE how you handle online creeps. At this point I'm sure there'll be a line of clothing from your sponsor with the fabled phrase "remove cloth".
