Hi Esme, I also learnt how to ride with non horsey parents and it took me a while to convince them to book me a 30 minute lead rein lesson but now i have come soooooo far you have really inspired me!
@timeless712
@timeless712 Жыл бұрын
Honestly I think it’s great that you spent so long on the lead reign. You see so many riders cantering on their third lesson. I definitely think it’s safer to be pretty good the posting trot on the lead and be able to halt on your own (still attached to the lead reign) before your properly let off. The lead reign is nothing to be ashamed of, it’s a learning tool. And learning to catch and tack up is absolutely necessary! It’s both a good thing to learn for safety and independence obviously you want to be supervised for safety.
@DAC_eq
@DAC_eq Жыл бұрын
Yeah, but with me and my sister, our school took noooooo risks. Which meant we were stuck on lead rein for 8years. I have only started cantering for like a year, and have started jumping in the last 4 months. We ride horses, heavy animals that can kill us. That's a risk itself. I do agree with your point. At my school there was one nutcase who made 5 -14 year old first time riders canter. But you shouldn't prolong it

Yeah, I was never on the lead rein but I had to be able to comfortably sit and post a trot with and without stirrups before I was able to canter. Now that I teach lessons, I require the kids to do this as well, it is super important for the safety of everyone!

My parents are also non horsey, my dad use to own a gray Arabian ( it mostly belonged to his sister ) but he was never really into riding. When I got into horse riding my parents told me I couldn’t have a horse or lease and it was really unfair for me, but I’m really happy we’re I am with my riding. My mom always thought it was cool that I ride but when I did my first jump she was super concerned and got me an air vest. one day i dream to have more then one horse ❤

My parents were non-horsey too and I Started riding at 5 years old, my younger sister came along and now all four of us are horsey people and we spend a lot of time at the barn (it's not super big, they have 13 horses). We have a great bond with the owners and even got to take care of the horses (and sheep, dogs, cats and chickens) for a week during their vacation last winter and my parents are becoming more and more chilled and at home among horses, which is amazing and I just love the fact that they've gotten the horse virus now too:)

Esme, you had taught me so so much, I have a non horsey mom, who is scared of horses😅, and an ex rider dad. I was competing 70 cm with a small and slow pony. Of course I lost. I was so disappointed, I was never going to have the right timing with this borrowed horse… until one day my parents bought me this ten year old American cuarter horse. Im competing him for the first time in 60cm in Friday. Wish me luck!!

I come from a very non-horsey family (as in literally zero interest in horses) so when I suddenly came up with the idea I wanted to ride the answer was no way, it's too expensive, too dangerous etc. and unlike your parents ,mine NEVER caved no matter how many times I put it on my Christmas list! I was able to have a few lessons but I learned nothing other than I loved horses. Fast forward to being an adult and at the age of 26 I have FINALLY managed to start taking lessons. Riding schools still have communal hats to use, and I don't think I'll be able to get my own for a while as I can only just barely afford lessons 😢 so hat number 5 and wellies it is for a while, but I'm loving it and it's a dream come true

I grew up with non-horsey that weren’t exactly the richest parents but still got to ride at a young age (4) And now I can do things I only dreamed of back then. Although it’s still a bit of a struggle to explain what change the rein is etc 😅 they are supportive of my riding. I’m starting competitions this summer. I'm not sure if things have changed recently but I took riding lessons as an adult in 2017 and the school I was at had the same communal helmet set-up. No one from the school was actually helping new riders to choose which one to wear either, I just tried them all on until I found one that felt about right and off I went. In hindsight it wasn't the best school really, we did the whole "sit on the horse and walk in a circle for an hour" and that was it, and cantering for the first time was 100% a big deal, which is probably why I was terrified the first time. Bit of advice, folks, shop around before giving a riding school your money!

The local riding school passed by your house. You were in the country. You had friends that were horsey. Your parents, despite being initially non-horsey, supported your dream as a child. Oh my! You were in a perfect position to get into the horsey life. All your parents really needed to do is pay for it. Heck, your parents even put your younger brother into riding lessons! They were just giving you a hard time 😂! I had to drive 45 minutes to a barn in the country. I lucked out! Eventing barn (Pony Club here too)! Woo hoo! Full cross country course. Racing stables with a track we could use just across the road too. This is in the USA not the UK. So enjoyed listening to this so much! ❤
