When I was a student back in 2012 I would buy spaghetti which was 15p at the time, I would get the mushroom cream soup and sausages pack and make a big pot of creamy pasta with sausage! That would be my dinner for pretty much a week as I would make sure to freeze it in little container. I would also have banana and black coffe for breakfast and I would buy a big tub of potato salad from Iceland and frozen veg and rice. Lunch would be potato salad or veg and rice with a fried egg. Was super boring at times but I survived and it would be less than £40 a month on food since I would sometimes get fruit and salads to help

Even more amazing is that the price of potatoes and mixed vegetables has since gone down at Aldi so (as of mid-September 2023) the total price is now down by 12p to £9.96

@@KatzikiKiro It's best to be at Lidl for opening time for the boxes - I buy them on a regular basis and not a lot gets wasted, just usually a few carrots if there are a load in the box. My last box I bought a couple of days ago had 2 punnets of strawberries AND a punnet of grapes, alongside a couple of baking potatoes, 4 decent bell peppers (only 1 was green), some tangerines, a couple of bananas, a nice big red apple, a head of lettuce and a couple of other items I don't seem to recall at the moment. For 1.50. Bargain. As I'm vegan they are IDEAL for me. At the end of the day you could just use the fruit and veg for cheap smoothies.

Not enough fruit! Good call on bananas - cheap fruit for what you get. Possibly a frozen bag of mixed (often 'imperfect' ones are cheaper) berries, take some out the night before and have with the porridge. Frozen fruit is cheaper, less likely to waste and often fresher than 'fresh'. Oh, cheap baked beans would be healthier than spag hoops, whack some tarragon and paprika in and the cheap ones'll taste great!

You can eat for less if you buy discounts in other supermarkets, but you have to be able to put in the work, and lots of people can't because of their schedules or don't have the right supermarkets in easy reach. I love the food save challenge! It stops me wasting food and gives me a better appreciation of home cooking. :)

So I’ve technically done a £10 at Asda before. I think it was a little over but still under £11. I don’t have the receipts but I’ll need to do this again as it was around 3 - 4 months ago since I last shopped there (I now work in a food retail shop so I get more for less with a discount). If I remember the list it was: Spaghetti 4 Pack of potatoes Pasta x 2 Cheese (Asda brand) Beans Carrots (if they do the stew pack with a parsnip and onions then get that as that’s usually under £1) 2 tins of tuna (cheap ones) Bread Noodle packs (Asda brand) Bananas Sausages The great thing about Pasta is the amount of cheap dishes you can make with it. I was in a struggle for a whole month only having £30 for food for an entire month and found some cheap pasta dishes from aldi that you can make yourself. 1 bag of pasta is enough to make 3 meals if you know the amount. As well as rice is a good shout. It was a horrible month for me but looking up some tips on stews, pasta and rice dishes saved me the worries and £30 was just enough to go through it but I also did have other stuff in my flat as well for breakfast and ingredients. If I didn’t have any of them then it would’ve been impossible.

Spaghetti CARBS 4 Pack of potatoes CARBS Pasta x 2 CARBS Cheese (Asda brand) (Poor) PROTEIN (Cows milk isn't properly digested in the human body - Goats and sheep's is however better - BUT far more expensive) Beans CARBS Carrots VITAMINS and FIBRE 2 tins of tuna (cheap ones) (poor) PROTEIN (I say poor bc in cheap tinned fish all the essential oils for brain function are removed to be sold at a premium. Then the remaining flesh is repacked in brine or a cheaper oil leaving nothing like the inferred heath benefits) Bread CARBS Noodle packs (Asda brand) CARBS Bananas COMPLEX PROTEIN with extremely helpful POTASSIUM and MAGNISIUM But a high CARB content that promotes Blood sugar spikes Sausages ABOUT AS NUTRITIOUS as the floor sweepings of a Butchers shop (although they taste great!) ALSO implicated in Bowel cancer. So, for a young woman's body this is existing with virtually NOTHING to support her brain ((No amino acids etc ) and NO IRON to support her monthly cycle - a subject that is never addressed in nutritional circles. The Iron issue could easily be solved by swapping junk sausages for fresh lambs liver..

It's not bad health wise and she does fantastic to get it for a tenner although if you can eat it, baked beans are probably a bit healthier than spaghetti hoops being a protein (I don't like spaghetti hoops though so I may be biased). I would probably just buy 4 pints of milk myself for 20p more just check the date of it will last a week. I'd probably spend a little more and get some cheese but when you're really strapped for cash that's not always possible. If you have a small freezer you could buy a big block once a month grate it all and freeze it to use with your omelette etc. Just some thoughts. I have also found in the long term batch cooking works out cheaper and a bit more variety again if you have freezer space but it does mean buying a few weeks worth of a lot of the food at once though. Good on you for keeping your head on straight Mia.

People like her should be employed to teach people how to cook & meal plan on such a low budget. My neighbour was complaining about not having enough money, neither of the couple work, yet they have about 3 takeaways a week. Their favourite is a fancy, but very close burger place, you’re talking £10+ for a burger, just plain, bit of salad, no cheese or extras, also NO chips! They’re separate and also very expensive. The drinks, milkshakes and desserts are also ridiculously priced. In the opposite direction another place has a 1/4 lb burger, salad & chips for £4!

It's a crying shame anyone should have to live like this. We have an abundance of food that is wasted every year, while people skim and save to get by. The free hand of the market and capitalism have failed to allocate resources efficiently. We need democratic ownership of the means of production and the institution of central planning to ensure no one need starve when there is food on the shelf. Only by managing society collectively and democratically from the bottom up can we resolve the manufactured crises of scarcity that plague our society in food, fuel, and housing.

Sub the jacket potatoes for a 2 lb bag of rice, add a 1 lb bag of lentils for protein, a few cans of tomato sauce.... that would be a good start. Realistically in the US, I would aim for $15 and ir would be challenging to do it at just one store.

Not enough food. You're supposed to have three meals and three snacks each day - bare minimum. I completely get doing this if you absolutely have to, but nobody should be advocating this type of diet

Three meals and snacks every day are not essential; that's just a construct of modern Western living. It's about the macronutrients and micronutrients you get in, and when you meet those needs you _probably_ also have enough calories. This girl's diet is an issue because she is undernourished by the ingredients, not because of the portions she eats.
