My cabbages have been in the ground for 2 months now and they need some work to set them up for their later growing stages. I am pruning the outer leaves and adding fertilisier. I will also be treating for cabbage moth caterpillars

Finding your channel has been a huge help to me. I really enjoy how you show everything in good detail & the fact your weather patterns look similar to mine even though I'm in Melbourne, is great. I went out & bought dynamic lifter for my brassicas on your recommendation 👍

Glad you can join me. Best of luck with your brassicas and hope they produce well. They need a lot of nitrogen so don’t be shy with the application rate 👍

Hi Anthony, your patch is looking great I was pleased to see it survived all that rain. I am only just putting my cabbages in now (running late) this is my first time growing them so appreciate all your tips. Jacqui

Happy to help. It was close with the rains though my Chinese cabbage did suffer a bit from all the rain some are rotting at the moment. All part of the fun I guess

Yeah mine were still doing fine till about a week ago when the rain shocked the jalapeños and eggplant. They are all going to need to come out now. The garden has definitely slowed down

nice one mate. i prefer ammonium sulfate during coldest parts of winter crops, as it's available right away and helps them keep growing during the cold. the bacteria etc that needs to work on other fertilizers to make thrm available not active during cold. pyrethrum is damn expensive nowadays. cant get cheaper in bulk. i prefer BT for caterpillars, as it stays on plant for week or so.

Hey mate thanks for this comment. I’m really interested in working on my fertilisier regime. Do you find that using sulfate of ammonia later in the growth works better? I have been toying with the idea but in my context I added the fertilisier in early autumn while the soils were still warm so that it can take full advantage of it and add on growth before the cool weather. Would you run the risk of the head not forming well if you give the plants a dose of ammonia so late in their growth? With pyrethrum I bought a bulk pack of ambush (1l pack) which I only need 1ml of concentrate per 5L application so it lasts a long time. I would look at BT also 👍

@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 : nitrogen and sulfur is what brassicas and also garlic and onion like. i also use A.S. for other greens like lettuce. it's especially good for winter, when most other fertilizers dont do much. never had a problem with heading. is A.S. supposed to be not good for heading?
@sydneybackyardveggies9612
@sydneybackyardveggies9612 Ай бұрын
Nah it’s great for cabbages but I have read that when the head is forming especially when it is in the process of firming up another application of S.A may not be beneficial and cause excess growth. Honestly though I’m keen on giving it a go and applying a second application in a months time if it works well with you

@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 : seems to be fine. your mileage may vary. just saw farmers in phillipines apply first chicken poop pallets a couple of weeks after seedlings went in, then a few weeks later S.A., then final round of fertilizer potassium and calcium nitrate, as heads starting to form. i've already been picking cabbages and have a fee left to go, which was a late summer planting. have another set of cruciferous seedlings to go in soon, and i'll start them off with S.A., as it's getting cold here. they'll be ready late spring. i cant start summer crops too early as the weather in melb is so fickle early spring anyway. i grow cabbages etc most times when summer crops not fully occupying space. love the chinese cabbage wombok, such a quick grower and can be used instead of regular cabbage most ways. the only crop i wish i could grow more of outside of summer is beetroot, as for some reason they seem to detest cooler weather. roast them and freeze them, so they can be used anytime once thawed.

Anthony......"come through" is said way too much......love what you are doing mate....but now you are a youtube creator, you have to be careful that your content doesn't become monotous, repetitive and boring. That's a recipe to lose followers. I hope the feedback is taken as constructive criticism.

Thabks mate really appreciate the feedback. Been freestyling the dialogue and I tend to fall back on those same phases 😀 originally when I started this channel it was going to be more of a vlog where I just take people along while I’m working in the garden and it sorta became a how too and you are right it becomes the same thing every time. Thinking of doing videos where I just work in the garden and record the footage as I go and pull back on the how too. Veggie gardening can become very repetitive in the seasons. Thanks again for the comment 👍

I like all the 'how too' Anthony, I don't find it boring or repetitive. I watch a lot of gardening channels and all the good ones tell you what they are sowing, how they are growing things and what they use, the difference is as an Australian your channel is totally relatable, we are planting the same things at around the same time and I can go out and buy the same seeds/products if I chouse. Thank you Jacqui
