Hi Anthony, a trick if you need to increase the height of your star pickets - grab some rigid PVC pipe that has an inside diameter slightly larger than the star picket. You then slide the PVC over the star picket and put a screw or wire through one of the star picket holes to prevent the pipe sliding down. Works a treat and super easy to remove for storage.

Mate that’s a great idea I was thinking of zip tying timber stakes to the star pickets and then continue the trellis. Might see if I can find some lying around

looking good. unless someone lives in mountains or canberra, veggie patch can be productive in winter in australia. they're a bit slower and we cant grow summer crops but still growing food in winter. for seed starting i have a couple of proptek brand cell trays that i had to buy from overseas as they dont stock this model here. i rarely transfer to pots, as i find small seedlings take well to transplanting out.

Yeah I grow veggies all year round but I find the key is to plant the garden out in early autumn to take advantage of the warmth. I need to look up the trays you use. I am like you I prefer to transplant straight from the cell into the ground I do not like to pot on before planting out either

The master of the succession planting here! The lack of sun cast onto my garden bed is making it difficult for my patch in Adelaide. Will you be starting tomatoes and capsicum on heat mats?
@sydneybackyardveggies9612
@sydneybackyardveggies9612 9 күн бұрын
I find in my house because it is heated that the seeds generally germinate without heat mats. If you have one use it but I haven’t spent the money on one yet

Hi Anthony. Love the channel since i found it recently. I am in the Macarthur region and it is amazing the slight differences in climate affect crops. I have around 30 fruit trees and 15 raised beds. Fruit fly is such a problem here. I have to bait fruit fly and also net, otherwise i lose every plum and every apple. Tomatoes depends on the season. Also if i don't net the apples, plums, grapes and passionfruit, the birds take what the fruit fly doesn't. I guess that is the price of backyard fruit and veggies. Looking forward to following you in the future. Cheers

Yeah thanks for watching. Fruit flies are a fact of life and I don’t want to bet my patch so I grow and harvest early in the season and then do a second planting to get around the fruit fly. I might look at netting my capsciums this year to save the crop. I just don’t want to spend the money on fruit fly netting 😀

Do you get any frosts there Anthony? I'm interested to know how your established avocado and mango respond, since I've got my young ones in the polytunnel that I want to eventually plant out.

We don’t really get frosts here. Last year I got a real mild frost one day but the mango and avacado did ok. Might have has some slight leaf burn not much else. They do ok here as they are in a fairly sheltered spot in the patch.

Hi Anthony, the patch is coming along nicely. Isn't it great that its nearly tomato time. I need to think this one out this year as we are going on holiday to Europe in late November for the Christmas markets which will be in harvest time. So, I'm thinking starting the cherry toms early and leaving the main crop till September for a later for a January harvest. Any suggestions. Cheers
@sydneybackyardveggies9612
@sydneybackyardveggies9612 13 күн бұрын
Hey Keith, it really depends on whether you get fruit fly strike in your area. I would lose my whole crop to fruit flies by the time January comes so I need to plant early. If you are not netting them I would look at seeing if you can either get your main tomatoes planted out just before you leave so that they will start producing outside the fruit fly window. Cherries should be ok. Late November planting should push you into a Feb March harvest. I usually plant my second planting in early Jan and the crop isn’t great but it’s fruit fly free so I’m going to try planting in mid December this year to give them a little more time

@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 Thanks Anthony. Yes, fruit fly is a big issue as I'm not that far from you. Last year I had a lot of success by putting fruit bags on when the fruit started to form and planting companion plant of basil and French marigolds around the crop. I'm also planning a second crop for winter preserving. Thanks for your advice it's much appreciated and well worth considering. Cheers Mate

Hahaha thanks. Full time engineer so spending most of the weekend either harvesting or tending to the plants. The shorter days make it hard to work the patch during the week but the plants grow slower as well so they need less maintenance
