I can't beleive this worked. Devlog for the GMTK Game Jam 2023! The theme of this Jam was 'Roles Reversed', so I made a game in Unity in just 48 hours where everything is not as it seems...

This is an amazing example of “following the fun.” You worked with the game to create the most entertaining outcome and did not get that typical gamedev tunnel vision. Excellent game and excellent execution!

This game looks great. Another entertaining video, that’s not too long or too short that also contains some useful tidbits of gamedev information (such as the springy joints). Well done.

Fantastic idea for a game! It really reminds me of an old game I used to play but I may just be mixing Peggle and and Cut the Rope up in my head.

It does feel very familiar you are right, but I can't tell either if that's just because it's obviously cut the rope or if there is another game tucked away in nostalgia there too!

The way I'd handle the snapping issue is by setting the tolerance of the joint component when you click, so the allowed length changes based off of how far you are when you first click

Tom Francis, the creator of Gunpoint, also made a game like this back in 2014 called "Floating Point". This type of concept is really enjoyable. I'd love to see a full game with this mechanic fleshed out one day, preferably with ninjas..

Hello, great video. And as for the problem you had with the soft body. The probably probably was that you didn’t connect each spring join to every other and not just the two beside it.

You wouldn't even need to create a soft body. you can simply change the bounce factor of the rigidbody and have a simple script to deform the sprite scale based on velocity

Actually I think you took this idea from an old game I use to play before spider name jack and the idea is to get the fly that stuck in his spider ropes .

Id love to help those people out but I unfortunately don't think this whole video would be helpful per people just wanting to learn about springs. Do you think a dedicated springs/ropes tutorial would be helpful to you? If it would please let me know what you'd like to see in it!

@@BLANKdev hell yeha it will i think you should show how to use spring joint when I was trying to create a rope it took hours to make a good one and I was working on a 2D game where if certain amount of ball are detected on the rope's collider it will break and sometimes they would just break without the condition being executed but hen increasing the mass or something else in the RB did the job I don't remember properly

@@BLANKdev everything, most IDEs refuse to work on Windows, the ones that do are needlessly frustrating or too old to be reliably supported, I didn't learn enough programming at a younger age, and I feel like I'll never be good enough because I don't put any effort into anything

XPBD is kinda sota afaik and it's so simple to code i'll show you here.. lkv.y -= gravity; prev = lk; lk += lkv; vec3 t = lh - lk; // constrain lk to lh t = t.norm() * ((t.mag() - ideallength) * soft); lk += t; lkv = lk - prev; .....isn't that keen?? chek matthias' video "simulate the world with xpbd" i've done audio dsp for a couple decades and like it just fine. one thing i got to add is that the k mass-spring coefficient is k = -w * w; where w = angular momentum or 2 * pi * freq_in_hertz / samplerate. in case you ever want to ditch unity's check boxes :)
