Still doing these. I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of making art.

A Buddhist teacher once said that all the senses penetrate a piece of art, not just sight. Feeling the painting to me means exactly that. It is not a tangible sensory experience, but a subtle one of the mind. It makes sense to all your senses and creates an esthetic whole instead of a mere sum of pieces. For the artist this can be a painful process to create, bc during most of your work you work on the pieces and it can be a fractured experience. Perfectionism to me also is piece work, necessary but also important to be abandoned at some point.

I feel like I’ve been working all week and also accomplished nothing so it was nice to finally upload this one 🐻

This might sound weird but doing the second livestream felt so calming in the middle of the week. I know that in the long term it’s not ideal to spend so much time on a live with only a few people present but given what’s going on it felt like going to a coffee shop to paint with friends. It was definitely the highlight of my week :)

I recommend drawing lots of castles from reference. Then when you’re making new castles a few years later it’s easier to improvise based on the composition needs of the artwork. Colours can only be learned by using them. Start painting with colours and don’t do black and white under paintings. That’s the fastest way to get better at it.

With the drawing assist on it’s impossible to draw non-quickshape lines that wouldn’t align to existing vanishing points. I have it set to the middle button between brush size and opacity to make switching it on and off as fast as possible.

The larger of the 2 with M1 chip. I’m probably going to skip the next one because it’s kinda wasteful to keep buying the latest ones when the apps really don’t need any more power for the most part. Not until we get proper video editing or 3d programs that rival the desktop counterparts.

Darkening the colour without any change in hue is a mistake.

Always use a reference when you need one. I have tons of horse photos on my phone that I dig out whenever I need them.

@@angrymikko That's one of the problems. Finding good reference photos on the internet that aren't overly shopped. I may not be searching for the right things. I wish I could go outside and start taking pictures but the buildings, landscapes and structures in the city I live are boring. Do you have any suggestions on finding good references?

When at all possible the best option is to have a live reference. Ipad enables to paint on location in ways that weren’t before possible so above all else I recommend using that to your advantage. With photos I recommend avoiding using only one reference because it’s almost impossible to have any understanding of the 3d volume of the subject from a still photograph. There’s nothing bad about just simple phone snaps because at least you always know you own the rights to the reference material you’re using and that you took them the way that you see the world. Photography is already art and it’s best to be in control of your own framing and composition instead of having someone else do the most important part (composition) of any painting for you. There are options though even if the area in which you live might seem boring. For example google street view doesn’t have edges as you can rotate the camera freely in areas where they have used 360 cameras. There are also plenty of accurate 3d models for different animal skeletons which are really handy when trying to understand the anatomy of an animal that you wouldn’t be able to take photos of. When combined with references (plural!) it’s easier to form an idea of what that shape looks like. Then when you’re adding lights. They can be specific to the scene and mood of your piece as the light in a reference photo will always be just what it is and therefore often not usable for a painting. When seeking reference photos I recommend prioritising ones that are from different angles or ones that have different directions of light. Looking them side by side gives also more information about the 3d volume rather than one image. For colours it’s better to build them yourself based on the local colours of the reference and then letting the light source hue determine the colours of light and shadow areas on those surfaces.

@@angrymikko Yeah but when you make those buildings in your concept art, you can't be looking at a live reference right? You have to take the image and pick some parts from it to put in the concept art. How do I find those images? From experience of what works and doesn't? I want to make sci-fi space concept art but...it's like what would be a good design for it? I'll have to design something up and make it look realistic. Like a space colony and it's interior design. Some people make the inside of the colony look just like earth. That is a way to compromise but I want to go one step further. Maybe I have to plan out some base rules of my fantasy space and make sure I don't break them when designing things.

@@angrymikko After watching some more of your videos, I get it now. The first try won't be the best. I need to do it first, then build upon it over time and make it turn into my vision. Having the right references is not what is stopping me from creating my vision. I am trying to jump steps when I have to take each one at a time and learn from them.

NFTs are currently just a massive waste of energy and until the industry changes it’s ways any artist that mints an NFT with current tech ends up looking like a selfish a-🕳. I’ll wait and see but I’m not holding my breath given how it’s going right now.

I don’t like those they make painting harder.
