Guys the membership videos are amazing, I highly recommend joining the channel if you're interested in learning to paint. Wise commentary as always Mikko, thank you for sharing. Also, the story behind the snow brush was very fun! The knowledge of painting with your dog's paw must be wholesome :D I also don't think many people would dismiss the brush based on the story.

Part of the reason why I like it is the snow texture but now that I've used it for a few paintings I've noticed that this is pretty much the only brush I've ever made or had where the source fits the grain. It's so simple and yet I've never even thought about matching those 2 things to have the same look.

Using your pup as a stamp for the brush is really adorable! I think the effect with the texture is really lovely, and creates a sort of ethereal paint stroke. I think painting fast comes with time, for sure, and really, there's no need to rush! No matter if you take 80+ hours or an hour, if you feel that the work matches what you were trying to achieve (or what your client was looking for), then that's what matters.

In my defence: I love picking up my dog. She definitely doesn’t mind being carried from room to room every now and then and she’s just the perfect weight to carry. Kinda like holding a furry gym bag in your lap.

What I love the most about your channel is that you are all about using imagination and turning it into something realistic. You have inspired me so much to push the boundaries of my art! I would love to see a video on your layering process as this is something I struggle with in procreate currently (I'm new to procreate coming from traditional art). Hi Mikko! First of all, I will only repeat what people have already written about your artwork thousands of times: simply amazing! I admire especially how good you are at the rendering of the light and shapes of clouds. I've always struggled understand how light works with clouds. I caught a few tricks in your video (hey, hey), but I do need to stop and rewind it ... because, gosh you're fast! But in this painting in particular, I was much impressed by the way you made the light shine through the white fluffy vegetation in the foreground. This brings magic, really. Lastly - and totally off topic _ why are you "Angry" Mikko? You don't look angry at all, so why did you pick this name? Have a good one!

The full process video of this for my members is 2hrs long. I can’t post videos that here because the retention would bombard my channel standing with the algorithm. Most people don’t have time for that so I have to cut the process into parts for videos like this one. I still haven’t figured out a perfect way to do it but the last time I did a full process video for “zero hour” people seemed to like that I added a bit of extra commentary on it so I’ll probably experiment with more of that in the future. I’m not that angry most of the time. My name is just very generic here and my real name is literally ungoogleable because the information gets mixed with so many guys with my exact name.

Damn dude. I just found your Channel, because i'm gettign an iPad soon and wanted to start painting too. I don't really understand much yet, but your philosophical aproach to art in general is really really nice. I make music (that's why i want to paint too; to create my own Art for that) and those mindset tips are soooooo incredibly valuable for art in general, not just painting. In general, mindset about art for my progress until now was literally 90% of what did it. Learning techniques and stuff has it's place too, of course, but that doesn't drive you forward or add great value. Mindset does.

Wonderful work, love you channel and open-hearted advice! I’m experienced at portraits using reference photos but am trying to remove dependency on reference, in an effort to hone in on my voice. Curious if you would have any recommendations?
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
I always have references whenever they help with what I’m doing. There’s no extra points for making paintings like these without references. The reason why I rarely use any have nothing to do with art best practices: 1) copyright law. I can’t show on this channel photographs I don’t own. Some people say “no copyright infringement intended” when doing that stuff but it’s the same as “no robbery intended” while walking out of a bank with a bag of cash 🤷‍♂️ 2) A lot of my paintings have livestreams. Like the end of this video for example is me doing a livestream for my channel members. In livestreams I simply cannot stop painting and browse the internet for 30 minutes. That would make the stream pretty dull to follow. However I often get asked about references on those livestreams and I always recommend to use them whenever it’s possible. If you’re not running an art channel then my reasons simply don’t apply to you and you can and should use all the references that help your workflow. When you’re doing the same tree shape for the 20th time then maybe you don’t need references for that thing anymore, but you can’t build up that kind of muscle memory without tons and tons of references to get there.

i really like procreate, but i haven't found "my" brush yet... i'm coming over from photoshop and lately from clip studio paint where i just love the watercolour brushes that you can blend on the canvas. alot of people just use the round brush, but i want a soft round brush without an edge? and i still don't know how to get what i want in procreate 😭 i've tried playing around with the brush settings, but i just don't understand procreate brushes... i can create them fine in PS and CSP, but not in procreate 🤣 so kudos to you!!! i definitely need to try your brushset! i love painting landscapes & clouds, and i miss doing that in procreate 💕 your videos are always such an inspiration!! thank you 💕

There’s a free brush for clouds in my brush set link. (Maybe I should actually write that in the description 🧐). There’s also an equally free cloud painting tutorial on my livestreams if you want to know how I use it. I can understand the Clip Paint Studio brush dilemma. Personally I think their default round brush is amazing for drawing. It’s somehow smooth yet incredibly fast. Wish I could help but I haven’t been able to recreate it in Procreate.

I too often struggle with (especially newer) digital painting apps. Battling the labyrinth of settings and brush engine options can be bewildering or sometimes maddening when a tweak here or there seems to undo some other progress I've made in getting a brush "just right". It usually takes more willpower to reset my thinking about why I'm even painting in the first place before I can go back to enjoying the process as much as the eventual result. That said, I bounce between Procreate, Infinite Painter, and Artstudio Pro… all have their pros and cons, and some really lovely painting tools. Once I find or make a brush I like in one, I try to recreate the same thing in the other two apps. Sounds like you prefer more of the soft, basic/airbrush type, which I also find very versatile. Good luck!

Hi there! I love watching your videos and I have learned a lot from you since subscribing a couple of weeks ago. I have one question, do you know if there is a pressure sensitive stylus for the iPhone 12 Pro? I have procreate pocket and I’m very impressed with the app and would be very beneficial to have a stylus with this option. Thank you in advance!
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
No, the 3rd party stylus manufacturers left the platform after iPhone X. You can still use one of those pens that can be used on any screen that just replaces your finger but no pressure sensitivity anymore. Apparently there wasn’t enough money in that market to make it worth it. Don’t expect Apple to make one. Based on their track record they’re not known for making any new products that don’t have mass appeal. Btw the stylii that worked on previous iPhones might not be supported on 12 anymore. On iPhone 6 my wacom pencil had pressure levels, on X it only had the 3D Touch of the screen and on 12 the stylus just leaves a trail of dots and is unusable. I reached out to wacom for news on future patches but they said those aren’t being updated anymore. At all.

Elizabeth Gilbert, in a Ted Talk, spoke about changing the internal speak to believing that you are a transfer medium from a muse. And she told how the ancient Greeks believed this way and this freed creatives and artists from the personal burden and suffering that would come if you think you are creating that magic all yourself. You came really close to saying this in this video. She also believed that this change in thinking away from muses is why modern artists are so prone to depression and suicide. 🐑💜

Blending skills are less important than choosing the right colours and understanding brush strokes. Usually when someone masters the first two then blending becomes a lot less important in actual painting. There's so much that you can express with the way you paint that blending it away might not be something that you always want.

The brushes I sometimes give to the channel members are experimental and as such they don't have the same amount of testing behind them as my Brushes for Painters set. I'm sure I'll make a "best of" set from those that I like most and I'm 100% sure snow will be included in it as it's still the best one I've made in months. The cool thing about these experimental ones is that if I don't like one feature of them I can just let them go but the temporary nature lets me take bigger risks with them. That sometimes like in this case enables these sort of lucky accidents happen. I'd say Cardboard Marker also is in that category. It took a fraction of the time to make compared to it's big brother Cardboard Paint brush but it's so good for painting strong sculpted looks like in my Green Afternoon painting.

There's a set price for the bundle but if you're asking about my free cloud brush the statistics show that 99,9% of downloads paid nothing for it. If the price of my brushes seems too high for your budget then please don't buy any of of them. The default brushes in procreate are great and having more brushes doesn't help to learn painting faster. Personally I use only one brush per painting. Also the Snow Brush is not on gumroad at the time of writing this.
