dry dash is a very hard plastering / rendering job to undertake both physically and mentally demanding on large and small jobs. Plastering and rendering is physically demanding in the fact that you have to use your body to get the job done and sometimes you gotta work hard and fast to complete the job to a high standard. plastering and rendering is also more than meets the eye as you have to know a lot of info for certain jobs as in when a big key to plastering and rendering is timing when to do what and why also knowledge of the suction the wall might have in certain areas and why and what to do about that what chemicals to use when and why and where such as bonding agents in the mix or painted on the wall and also water replants there is a lot of let's say sciences and maths in plastering and rendering. This is why I say there is more than meets the eye but I plan on helping all my viewers out trying to make the videos enjoyable and keep them as short and sweet as possible while at the same time make them knowledgeable and put as much info into them as possible, so I hope you enjoy and learn something from the demo on HOW TO PATCH PEBBLE DASH RENDER , DRY DASH , ROUGHCAST
Roughcast or pebble-dash is a coarse plaster surface used on outside walls that consists of lime and sometimes cement mixed with sand, small gravel, and often pebbles or shells. The materials are mixed into a slurry and are then thrown at the working surface with a trowel or scoop. The idea is to maintain an even spread, free from lumps, ridges or runs and without missing any background. Rough-casting incorporates the stones in the mix whereas pebble dashing adds them on top. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica Eleventh Edition, roughcast used to be a widespread exterior coating given to the walls of common dwellings and outbuildings, but it is now frequently employed for decorative effect on country houses, especially those built using timber framing. Variety can be obtained on the surface of the wall by small pebbles of different colours, and in the Tudor period fragments of glass were sometimes embedded

Fair play to you doing pebble dash on your todd Mac. I used to hate it. Probably psychologically damaged at a young age, as my first solo job was an office courtyard (Old Brick) it had loads of suction and it was a baking hot day. Thought I had it all sussed out until I went back to throw the dash on ...... most bounced off again ..... AARRGGHH!!!!! ...... Had to put a load in by hand :-) :-) The worst thing was ..... all the office staff were 'down-tools' and watching me ......... :-(

You make it all look so easy. I have dry dash with small black and white flint chips. It looks good but the stone chips are constantly falling off. The render underneath is sound. Is there a epoxy resin I can apply that would act like an adhesive to hold the stones in place? Any recommendations would be appreciated

There might be a sealer that would help sbr might work all I can think is test a small area 1st see if it improves but won't stain or discolour the render

Does the waterproofer make the mix stickier? I tried today with a mix of 1 part white cement and 3 parts sand and a few drops of washing up liquid as plasticizer but the plaster wasn't sticky enough for the smooth, rounded, 1/2 inch size river pebbles to adhere properly to. Any tips for getting the plaster sticky without any additives except for cement and sand? I noticed that the stones stick well to a paste made from just cement + water (zero sand), so could I use that?
@macplastering
@macplastering Жыл бұрын
So if you are putting on stones at half inch your coat needs to be at least 1/4 inch thick to receive them, but your mix should have been nice and sticky as is , this mix is 4 to 1 I would say you could add a scoop of lime to help make it lighter and fluffyer mate

@Twobirdsbreakingfree

@@macplastering alright thanks, yeah the pebbles should be sticking with a 1:3 mix shouldn't they, maybe because they're smooth rounded pebbles they don't stick as well as the angular ones. I'll try dampening the pebbles as well before throwing them on and see if that helps.
@Twobirdsbreakingfree
@Twobirdsbreakingfree Жыл бұрын
@@macplastering yeah I didn't dampen the stones before chucking them on. That could be the missing the link now that i think about it. Have you ever used smooth rounded river pebbles and found that they don't naturally stick as well as the more angular pebbles?

@@Twobirdsbreakingfree Dont think i have done much with smother stones think just a few small patch's like these ones that i tend to video as i have a little more time to record, I would say if you double coat wall to get a nice bed then if stones are damp they will take better no doubt but yes smother will be harder BIGGER WILL BE HARDER FOR SURE

Hello Mac thanks for showing us how this is done I have a project down here in Victoria Australia on an 100 year old house it has weatherboards running at around 900mm in height then a solid looking timber sill then the dash mix above that to eave height around 3mts I am quoting that requires a similar type finnish. My question to you is the existing stone seems to be around a 20mm-40mm stone I plan to hard board the existing stud wall ( cement sheet based product designed for flat rendering) fix chicken wire as a reinforcing then build out with a mortar mix sand ,cement , waterproofer mix . The stones being the size they are would you still flick them on like you have . Cheers mate love your work Trevor

@macplastering 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Trevor mate thanks for watching watching and the comment, yes i would still go this way but more similar to part 2 video on this dry dash , quick tips are you want to cintrol the dry as best as possible, youll need a simlar coat of render thickness to the stones its receiving so this might need to coats same day ,with will help sliw suction and wont slide if done in 2 coats , another handy tip might be to have the stone's damp like a must spray water on them just to help em stick , i am thinking it will be thought work for you as will possibly be fighting heat like i am in these 2 demo videos , only might be warmer for you in AUSTRALIA , hope this is usfull info , if yiu gavent seen part2 its a similar job but a 2 coats method if you havr time get a look mate , again thanks for the supporting

It depends on the surface brick or block suction ect ad of course the gear im using some are 10x stronger than others I think I used sbr and waterproof in this mix so it will be both strong and water proof , man i wet this down a few times after as well , was afraid it would crack but dried out very well if i am honest, If it was a bigger job i might have waited for a cooler day as that heat is hard to keep up with , my next vid I do another way witch if i am honest is much better
