Jack Nicholson is one of the greatest living American actors. Thanks to his work in movies like "Chinatown," "The Shining," "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest," "The Departed," and more, Nicholson has been famous for longer than some A-list actors have even been alive. With all that fame, however, comes media scrutiny. Nicholson dealt with this issue while doing press for "Chinatown" where a reporter discovered a shocking secret that Nicholson's family had been keeping from the actor for decades in a story that could very well be its own movie. This is the story of how Jack Nicholson realized his sister was his mother.

I found out that my Mother was actually a "late" half-Sister (she was born when my Grandmother was 40) to my two Uncles, as a young adult. It was no secret to her while growing up, but they made her swear never to tell anyone outside of the family. She never did, apparently; she was born in the early 1960's and was conceived while my Grandparents were separated for two years. When my Grandmother called to tell my Grandfather she was pregnant, my Grandfather rushed back to ask her in person: "So where's the deadbeat who left you holding the bag?" Oddly enough, it was my Grandfather who told me the story of how my Mother wasn't really his kid when I was 19. I always suspected as much when I become old enough to tell. My Uncles and Cousins all look like they jumped out of a German WW2 propaganda poster, while my Mother and I both have darker hair and a tan complexion.

@@mikenorton632 It’s what people did back in the day because of the stigma of having a child out of wedlock. It was basically the same thing if you were pregnant and divorced. It was frowned upon to be a single mother so you married soon after you were pregnant or had a baby because that’s just the way it was. I know because my mom did just that. She divorced my biological father when she was 3 months pregnant with me and she had my older brother too at the time. She married his first cousin and my dad adopted my brother and myself when we were 6 and 2 years of age. My biological father married again and went on to have two more children with his second wife. Now at 62 years old last year in 2020, I met my two half sisters for the first time. I didn’t know my dad wasn’t my dad till I was 23. I just found out last year that she told my biological father when they separated that I wasn’t his baby but she told me I was his at 23. He really never knew for sure. 23 and me changed all that when we all had our DNA checked. Keeping secrets like this will all come out eventually.

I knew someone who this kind of thing happen in their family. I feel bad for them because I was good childhood friends with the baby’s aunt/sister, so I was on the edge of the inner circle when the young mom got pregnant. When she gave birth, her parents legally adopted their grandson. I think their intensions were to be legally his guardians and openly his grandparents, but there was a lot of social stigma around the event. The whole family moved away to another state a year or so after the birth, and I lost touch with my friend. A few years ago, I caught up with my friend over social media. Turns out when they moved, they all agreed to keep the controversy to themselves and not tell the boy so he wouldn’t be a social pariah. Problem was, a family member from his biological father’s side of the family reached out to him around the time he was graduating high school. He had no idea about his true parentage, and it reignited a lot of problems in the family. It was especially traumatic for the young man. Last I heard, things have calmed down with them, and everyone has accepted the truth. So, these kinds of situations don’t always go well once the truth is out. I also feel that it can be dangerous not telling a child the truth about their parentage. What if the child grows up and gets into a serious situation with a half sibling or first cousin?

Oh no, no sweetheart! It was attempted but Bundy had such an ego, that he truly felt that since he went thru MAYBE up to 6 months of law school, he could totally represent himself and beat the system doing so. He truly did have a fool for a client by repping himself in court the way he did but they DID try!! And to say that he had no motivation in his life, he was a law school student, was part of the republican campaigns for president, worked the suicide hot line and a smattering of other accomplishments that I'm drawing a blank on. He just went the wrong way in life. Even the judge who sentenced him told him that he was impressed with how he did in court and he is saddened by the fact that he went the way he did bc he could have gone far as an attorney. Idk if it was long term brain damage caused by his abusive, woman hating grandfather/ daddy or his ego being bruised that did what he did bc all of his victims looked exactly like the only woman (my guess, not an actual fact) who broke his heart. He was petty enough to get his ass together, get into law school, and all the other crap he did, all as a big screw u to her. After he won her back by being the type of man her daddy approved of and then once he had her RIIIIGHT where he wanted her, he dumped her ass right back. However, it later did come out that she only broke up with him bc her FATHER wished it so...he didn't feel as tho dude would be a good enough provider for his daughter and back in those times, kids honored and respected their parents so who's to say that she didn't want to but had no choice in the matter? At any rate....I was really just impressed with Jack's story and the fact that he overcame such harsh realities in life. It brings up the question amongst so many psych doctors and their students alike concerning the whole nature vs. nurture argument.....see a story like this where u have 2 exact OPPOSITE personalities who went thru practically practically the same thing as children and 1 is a fairly decent guy, according to the paparazzi and other news/ interviewers and the other 1 was a nasty, murderous necrophile and rapist who probably just needed a hug as a child.....interesting stuff IMO. Take care of yourself hon. Hope all ur loved ones are safe and sound out there!!!

Okay I agree with both like ledger was the best at being dark like he was amazing and so was Joaquin Phoenix he was amazing too but Jack Nicholson is just like I mean I grew up with him so he's old school that's what I remember as a kid watching and I don't know I guess you can't beat the classics, and I may piss people off saying this but Jared Leto really disappointed me in the suicide squad I did not really like him as the joker I'm sorry to anyone who did but that's just my opinion

Something similar happened to my mother, who happened to be born in 1937. Her parentage was messed up and she had been lied to her entire life up until she was 48 when she buried her mother, she used an already purchased headstone for her ( she was sickly child) that had her name on it, only it was not the last name she grew up with. She lived in the same house as her father, but he was never considered hr father...more like an uncle. I suppose back then the social norms predicated the lifestyle people chose to live even if it meant pretending.

My first husband was told the same lie from birth onward. At the age of 10, his grandparents decided to tell him the truth...that his sister was really his mother. I never learned why they deceived him like this. Supposedly, his father died while serving in the armed forces during WWII. However, his mother also had a very close relationship with a Catholic priest who was supposedly her cousin (although the relationship was never explained) that went on for decades. They even bought a house together. I always suspected that Father Kelly was actually my husband's father, but this was never confirmed, needless to say. To this day, I think it...and all this happened fifty years ago. As for my first husband...he was a pathological liar, a gambler, an alcoholic, and a physical abuser. He walked away from our two children, aged three and six, and never looked back. This turned out to be a good thing, as my second husband was able to legally adopt them and he was an excellent father. His boys adored him.

This is really strange. I have always known that I share a birthday with Jack and that we both work in the entertainment industry, but the fact that we also have a sister by law that is a mother by birth blows my mind. I have always wanted to meet up and go out to celebrate our birthdays together, but now we would actually have something in common to talk about. My mind has been blown.

Was it “common”? Not sure. I don’t know too many people who were raised thinking their moms were their sisters. I know it happened …but I don’t know how “common” it was. I know plenty of people raised by grandmothers because their mother had them young, but usually they know their mom was their mom and their grandmother is their grandmother.

Love Nicholson's movies. My input on the comments below is nowadays with rampant drug abuse and inhibitions going out the window as well as more people with mental health problems more kids are being raised by a grandparent or in foster care. Years ago the grandparents would've raised them anyhow.

My ex husband was raised by his grandparents thinking his mother was his sister. I tried to get him to see it like Jack saw it but it really did a number on him. His "sister/mother" went on to marry and have a daughter. On the daughter's 15th birthday she gave birth to a boy. The boy was raised by the grandparents with his mother as his sister.

You just never know what people will do to help a child have a normal life. when my dad retired from one major mode of his life he moved our family far away to another area as his pre retirement life approached. as the house we bought was not vacated by the sellers yet we lived in a motel for two weeks. the motel owners were a pleasant couple in their 40s and they had a daughter about 8 yrs old we noticed. they noticed we stared at them a bit so they explained quietly that about 4 yrs prior a young couple had rented a room there with a young child then the next day that young couple just up and left; leaving their small child behind alone! the motel owners just quietly raised the child as their own without telling anyone else. worked fine for all of them; the young couple never returned. strange but true!

I think something like that happened to my great-grandma. She had an older sister, she was the baby of the family and I always see a link between her sister, her husband and a child they had with great-grandma's name, but she always called her sister. Back in the early days when someone had a baby either out of wedlock or maybe the father passed and the mother couldn't afford to raise the child, the parents would take the child as their own and even change the birth certificate to reflect the fact.
