A video about how simple living and minimalism made me wealthy but from more than just a financial perspective, giving me a new perspective on what it means to live a rich life.
It is without a doubt minimalism and living simply has helped me to save a lot of money and budget accordingly. But one side of slow living I never anticipated was the impact it would have on both my health and mental well-being, both of which have changed my idea of what it means to be truly rich. For me now, a wealthy life is about focusing our financial goals in alignment with our core values, to develop a life that is truly wealthy both inside and out.
Minimalism and slow living is a way of life that has made me feel wealthy today and everyday as well as save money and enjoy the little things - all of which I believe is what makes a truly satisfying and enriching life.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments below on what you think a wealthy life means and please like share and subscribe if you haven't already!
Wishing you a happy and peaceful day wherever you are!
Holly :)
LENTIL BURGERS
Ingredients (makes 2-3 burgers)
- 1 small white onion
- 1-2 garlic cloves
- 4-5 mushrooms (any type will do)
- 200g green/brown cooked lentils
- 1tbsp flour (I used oat flour just blended oats)
- 1tsp paprika
- 1tbsp tomato ketchup
- Dry herbs of choice (I used thyme and oregano)
- Seasoning
- Burger buns and garnish of choice
Method
1. Begin by heating a little oil in a frying pan on a medium heat
2. Dice the onion and garlic finely and add to the pan with a little salt to begin to fry off and soften
3. Finely dice the mushrooms and add to the pan, continue to fry off until the mixture has softened
4. Meanwhile rinse off the lentils (drain from the tin) and add to the frying pan combining well with the rest of the mixture
5. Add in the paprika, ketchup, herbs and seasoning and mix until well combined
6. Add in your flour of choice and allow the mixture to cool slightly taking it off the heat
7. Shape around a handful of mixture into a patty and place on a Tupperware or on a chopping board and allow to set in the fridge for approx 30 mins - the patties will firm up during this time
8. Add a little oil in a frying pan on a medium-high heat and cook on either side until crisp and browned for around 3-4 minutes
9. Once cooked serve in a burger bun with a garnish of choice and enjoy! 😊

I appreciate your humility so much, Holly. And thank you for reminding me that slow living is not about living at a snail's pace but living mindfully so that we gain the fullness of the time and space we are in. We can bloom right where we are instead of longing to be elsewhere!

You are helping me to see that materialism is not the answer to happiness. In fact, shedding this desire lightens the burden greatly! Thanks for helping to redefine wealth and for finding contentment. Once upon a time I knew this, but culture has a way of creeping in and taking over our lives and we can counter this by living mindfully. Thanks for being a beacon of hope!

Thank you for your comment and I’m humbled how this video has had such a positive impact on you!😊 Although these are my own opinions and perspectives, I do believe it’s important to challenge societal definitions of these kind of things and forge our own ideas. That in itself is the key to living an authentic and satisfying life I feel too☺️

This is all so true. I enjoy being frugal, even more than I need to be, for a few reasons. 1. the peace of mind with having a cushion 2. being forced to appreciate the small things 3. the joy of "insourcing" things you do for yourself. and then not needing to rely on and pay others 4. avoiding the trap of falling prey to thinking you need things to complete yourself. 5. a lot of the best things in life are free.. eggooing for a run on a nice morning.. going local parks..... meditating.

To feel genuinely wealthy in life you must have health and the absence of financial hardship. Add to these basic requirements the freedom to do the things you love with your time and to have a few genuine relations with family and close friends. Long have I strived to achieve this situation in life and I’m finally there. Being from Sweden, my favourite Swedish word is “Lagom”, no excess, not too little, just the sweet spot in the middle there - a very Swedish word. I think if you stick with “lagom” you will do fine in life and have a good chance of happiness.

Some people may think that Holly’s message about living simply etc only applies to the young, it doesn’t. Tuning out from the world of consumerism is perhaps even more important for those that are older as their time is less and so making every day a rewarding experience is doubly important.

Holly Holly you make the most beautiful videos ..warm and down to earth, beautiful background music and full of meaning..you need to be really proud of your work…as for the mushrooms I don’t see what is wrong with eating them uncooked…most food has the most nutrients in its rawest form…when it comes to wealthy there’s a balance because we need money to live and have a home and our necessities but that doesn’t mean we are happy or healthy because that’s a different kind of wealth…personally I believe true wealth is in the quality of person we are…and the kind of life we lived…this saying has always helped me ….take only what you need and try to help those who are without…I once heard that most people don’t enter into their own heaven while on earth simply because they refuse to bow down to what is right….everything was created to help something else live…that is the balance …and by being grateful for everything we find our way to true happiness ..

I never cared about money, but all I cared about was working my job, taking care of my parents and having fun. Unfortunately I worked way too hard and way too long and ruined my health doing this, leading to chronic depression and Crohn’s disease 😢. I never worried about my own health but now that I’m chronically ill I really regret that. Furthermore I agree with you about being frugal. I used to be one of those people that was in debt (a lot), but now that I payed it all off I’m a lot calmer. Especially since I have quite a lot of savings now. By the way I love mushrooms raw and cooked 😊.

Hit the nail on the head once again! You can have all the money in the world but it can't buy you good health or peace of mind. You've got me intrigued with this uncooked mushroom idea as I normally just fry them in garlic butter. Your way is certainly more healthy though; that's for sure 😂 You and your dog at the end of the video was definitely a highlight. Both of you look so cute and content with each other. I think being wealthy can also be a sentiment that comes from within and expands to without and to the outside. The acts of charity and ideas that we spread can teach us about how to interact with others, and if we finally ever get more money, we will be able to spend that money in a more thoughtful way, because of all of the years of preparation that we did beforehand when building our "inner wealth" of positive decisions.

A great video, Holly. True wealth for me lies in being content with what I have and appreciating it. Pursuing my passions, being authentic and being around my loved ones makenme happy. What else could I ask? As a millennial, youth today value chasing money. I never deny building wealth for financial security, but that's not the only thing in life. I don't want to spend my life filling my bank account. Although frugality for me is a challenge, our capitalist society structures us with the need to acquire more, hence creating a false sense of self that becomes doomed in consumerism. By the way, I would put the mushrooms in a pasta!

I define wealth with money, not to take away from your video or the many splendid points I took the time to digest in the comments section. I understand, respect and agree with the "simpler things in life," but I wouldn't be able to enjoy them without money in the bank, health insurance and dental. When you're broke, the hierarchy of needs doesn't allow you the warm fuzzies and esoteric emotions drawn from a field of mushrooms. You're just consumed with paying bills, putting food on the table and keeping a roof over your head. I'm aware of my hypocrisy as well. I complain about inflation yet rejoice about the high interest rate I get every time I buy a new $10k bank CD. If you're still with me, I'm nearing my close. I love the life I have now; minimalism, my flower garden, journaling, learning to juggle, learning sign language, the year-round creek out back I sit at and let my mind wander. I've put all of my children through college, and they have their master's degree and no student loans. God has blessed me far better than I deserve. I'm wealthy beyond measure in love, peace of mind and serenity of spirit.

Hi Holly, thank you for the beautiful new video :-) true wealth.. your message has got me thinking. True wealth to me is Jesus, I became a Christian when I was 15 years old when I was in a very dark place in my life, and everything turned around for the better, I turned around for the better, since then. I've read the entire bible almost three times, the New Testament alone, probably 70 times or so. There's a scripture that says.. "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal." (1 Corinthians 13:1). That's just a portion of it, but it basically means if I have everything (even knowledge and well articulated speech) but I don't treat people with love and kindness.. I've just become noise. There's certainly a lot of noise out there.. I can't believe anyone would want you "hung, drawn, and quartered" for eating whole/uncooked mushrooms! I say eat them however you like. Stay true to yourself and do what you love, and let the critics kick and scream.. because it's just noise. I can't help but be reminded of the movie Braveheart when you said that lol. I also pray for you sometimes, because you're a very lovely person. Sorry for the long message but I just wanted to share those thoughts with you :-)

I’ve heard it said that to have a rich full life we need to have good relationships, good health, etc. if we are wealthy financially but have poor health then we are just a poor man with money. If we are financially wealthy but have poor relationships then we are still just a poor man with money. A rich life and is doing what you love doing and knowing you are exactly where you are supposed to be. Money is important but still just a tool for us to use and should never be a goal. It’s just my opinion but it’s important to live a fulfilling life however that looks to someone.
