How long is long enough or too long for comic book light treatments? I still don’t know but….

For this particular book 2-3 hours is the minimum time, We started seeing some color fading at about 7-8 hours for oranges and yellows. Blues and black seemed immune to fading even after 25 hours.
there was no obvious paper damage even after 25 hours of continuous 435 and 460nm, light exposure and 25 applications of 6% h202

Opposite side of the color spectrum. Blue light reacting to a mix of Yellow and Magenta inks. CMYK. Tan/brown is absorbing the most energy and reacting/bleaching. Cyan/blue is reflecting the most energy and not reacting. Tan in the blank areas of the paper is reacting/bleaching early. You confirmed my observations that 9 hours cumulative seems to be the beginnings of the magenta bleaching.

Nice video! You saved me a lot of work of testing. I too noticed that 2-3hrs works good for me to get rid of the brown tanning of pages. I have "The Life History of Michael Jackson" comic book. He seems to get more beached out toward the end of the comic book. Strange thing is, I never treated those pages!

You would have to clip the mask to the page, and likely need some cross bracing clipped across the middle of the page, to get a stark light line. The peroxide is going to bleed some beyond the mask. Still a great experiment.

Interesting results Rick! Did you notice any fading in areas with long exposure and no peroxide? I've been experimenting with using a piece of glass to prevent the paper from curling up (similar to preparing a microscope slide :D )

I did see some fading , primarily in the oranges, reads and yellows. But only after about 7 hours or more. other books have presented this problem in shorter durations (2-3 hours) but its always on the same colors.

So apparently paper quality based on the year and possibly even the roll can make a difference as well as the ink mixture, so the best we can hope for is an average light exposure time based on the age of the comic, which could be representative of the paper and ink composition used. Of course where the comic is published could also be a factor as could the humidity on the day the comic was published. Way to many factors to take in to account to try to arrive at a perfect time. So I am thinking the best way to go about using light on a comic is to use a time between 1 and 5 hours based on our best SWAG (scientific wild a.. guess)

pretty much everything makes a difference but I'm trying to establish general guidelines! SWAG is a term we use often around here, lol

The photobleaching may be a result of repeated HOOH applications. Those final areas are getting over 20x the peroxide as the first one. That's got to have an affect.
@ImmaculateComics

It almost certainly is due to peroxide. I did a similar experiment with just light and there was almost no photobleaching at all

If I'm suspect of the ink/colour, I shorten the time of exposure and observe any (if any) fading/colour loss. I'm pretty paranoid and only do exposure times of maybe an hour or two, then wait the day to see if it might need another treatment. Peroxide definitely makes a different. Lots of experimenting to do still, kinda all new to me. Fingers crossed, no over exposure/fading/damaging colour loss to date. I am much more careful on lighter colours (yellows/oranges/red)...

I share your caution. The paper is much more stiff/brittle at longer exposures too. I make masks to cover colored areas as it generally keep the whole page more supple too

Hi, what kind of peroxide solution do you use and how often? Also what is your process to do the front cover? Do you use the same method or something different?
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics Жыл бұрын
I use a 6% hydrogen peroxide mix. I typically only add it once at the beginning go the process. I have several videos doing that very thing if you want to check them out!
