We take a look at the Distribution numbers provided by Marvel Comics for Sergio Aragonés Groo the Wanderer to learn how many comics were sold to readers in the 80s and 90s. We also learn from Mark Evanier why we might not trust those numbers.

It's hard to tell with the quality of the newsprint, but the PO Box is probably "Ojai, CA", which is in Ventura County, California, NW of Los Angeles and east of Santa Barbara. It's pronounced not dissimilarly to how you would say "Oh, hi" if you met someone you didn't expect. It's Chumash for "nest", which describes how it's tucked between the edge of Las Padres National Forest and the Topatopa mountain range.

Thanks PrismGuy! You know, I’ve probably listened to Sergio pronounce it a dozen times, but I just wasn’t able to recall it. I live in the city with the most Finnish people living in it outside of Finland and I knew I was pronouncing it like a Finlander. And that just made me laugh. 🤪

I must admit that, going into this one, I wasn't sure how interesting you could make that annual sales box.... Colour me wrong! That was an awesome video! Thank you for the depth, and even with Evanier's proviso, it provides an interesting look into the popularity of Groo over the years (and in contrast to that Spider-fellow and the X-people ;)

Thanks Kevin! I agree that it’s a topic that seems like it might not be up everyone’s street… But if I find it interesting, I imagine there’s at least one other Groo nerd who will enjoy it with me! 😀 Thanks for keeping coming back for more videos! I’ve got two others in the van ready to come out in the next couple weeks!

Very interesting. I always wondered how we could find this information. Looks like when Groo was cancelled it was probably selling 20lb or less an issue. No wonder people say issue 120 is rare. Thanks!

Yeah. As soon as they went to Direct Editions for Groo, the numbers drop drastically. And you’re right, that’s why the last few years of Groo (especially the final few) are so hard to find, compared with the “glut” of early issues. 😀

Thanks Chief! I haven't posted a new video in a while, so maybe that's why you haven't watched. 😀 I've got a bunch planned (and two already recorded) for the next couple months, so I hope you'll keep watching and enjoying! 😀

I was thinking about this myself as postulated that Groo had to have been successful to some degree to have been around for such a long, long time now. Take care and I always appreciate your looks and insights into the world of Groo.

Thanks Ryan. Yeah, the numbers were never really talked about back then. But I had the sense from my friends, the kids at school and people at the comic shops, that while Groo (and Sergio) were well respected, Groo didn't sell like the superhero comics. Still, month after month it came out. Someone besides me MUST have been buying it. 😀 PS: I liked your pixel graphic avatar and went to check out what channels you were subscribed to. We have a lot in common: Techmoan, 8-Bit Guy, Adrian's Basement, etc. You might enjoy my good friend Robin's stuff: 8-Bit Show and Tell.

Great video as always! I recently saw a sales chart from 1984 that listed the average number of copies sold per store, probably not the most accurate, but quite interesting. It seems that in 1984 Groo sold far more copies per store than a lot of perennial favorites, including Batman!

Thanks Jason! I’d love to see that sales chart, get in touch if it’s something you can share. 😀 I’m not surprised that in 84 Groo was selling more than Batman, but a few years later, the ‘S sales would soar, I bet! 😀

Couple of observations. Marvel was going through all kinds of tumult with their ownership during this period. Still for people interested in the history of Marvel, that's actually a spot to get some insight in that element that I'd not thought of before. It is possible that the definition of the "Ownership" item was differently-understood at various times, unless SA actually maybe sold off the rights to Groo to Marvel at some point, which I assume wasn't the case. Also the reason the returns went down was more because the number of outlets selling books under those conditions dropped heavily.

Hey Glenn! Thank you for your observations. I will definitely look into the history of Marvel in the late 80s to learn what was going on. Yeah, I wonder if the different people preparing the ownership has different definitions of what that was, I’d assume the organization soliciting this info would explain exactly what they required? And for certain, Sergio never sold the rights to Groo to Marvel. Thanks again for the info! 😀

@@GrooTube Bear in mind, this was probably just a set form provided by the USPS, and it was probably hard to get someone at USPS to answer questions about it, so they just guessed, lol.

It is interesting (to me) that the late 80’s are when I stopped buying comics and there were others who followed my lead. 😊

Sergio would likely have fairly close to accurate numbers…as wasn’t he paid on each comic sold?
@GrooTube
@GrooTube Жыл бұрын
You’d think so, but according to Mark (who might have a better memory for these things) the numbers were all made up. I don’t know that they were paid per copy sold. Maybe they had yearly contracts?
