$170,237.34 for capacity that will facilitate the generation of multiples of cycles and decades of much-higher-than-cost revenue, and guarantee the ability to meet demand when and if it increases but can maintain a known minimized cost to storage over a 30+ year lifespan. I'd call it a low-cost win. Straight-line depreciation of the cost is around $5,674.58/year which was probably much more than what was spent in renting a building space with a constantly-changing humidity/temp environment, which is bad for wood storage (increased spoilage cost).

Hey Matt, Firstly, let me wish you and your family a Happy New Year - 2023 !! Secondly, thank you most sincerely for sharing the çonstruction and related costs. You have shown, once again, that you are a very transparent person and I commend you for that fact. Nothing to hide and enthusiastic at the same time !! BTW, what's Donovan doing now that the building is complete....? You certainly have a lot of work ahead of you - with arranging and installing all your "toys" !! Again, my very best wishes for the future and may God Bless !!

When you decided to build the sawmill, you set a direction for your life that included all the changes and investments you have made ever since that time. I always felt sorry for you struggling to operate that mill on a urban residential home property with minimal "heavy" equipment, and I understand the reason for everything you have done since that time. As an investment in your business for the future, you will probably never regret doing this building because it will add great utility, functionality, convenience, protection, and flexibility for whatever directions you choose to go. Your economic decisions have been practical, thoughtful, and sensible. Congratulations on your great accomplishment!

Your contribution to this building is worth FAR more than $5,000. Don't undervalue yourself! You built a heck of a structure that will stand the test of time. Wonderful things will come out of that shop and it will reward you and your family for many years. Even if you wind up selling it, your contribution alone will be worth 30-50% of that value. No architecture fees, contractor profit, etc. You've contributed significant equity to it. And that counts for more than most people realize! Had you NOT been this involved you could expect a much greater cost, I assure you. And your subs probably enjoyed working with you as they could see their work going into something great. Glad I found your channel!

Thanks for the cost breakdown. You were fortunate to be able to manage the build yourself. You didn't have to deal with no-shows, employee sick days, sloppy workmanship, theft, injuries or just plain slow, lazy helpers. You had a great guy with Donovan and you guys cranked out a bunch of work in a short time. Timing: you were able to line up all the subs and get the barn closed up before the snow arrived! All that spells SUCCESS to me! Great job.

I have been planning to build a barn here in central MI in which to store a lot of my things, as well as to renovate, and then store my sailboat. I figured a 60' x 70' x 16' steel sided barn just like the one you have built would be what I needed. I started the planning about 20 years ago and began saving money that, at the time, would be around $50,000. As I began getting close to that time, I saw that the price of everything went up! I have managed to save twice that now, and find out that I am really only half way there thanks to 'planned' inflation! This is where I decide to just enclose the space and worry about getting the rest done over time, including my side overhangs and flooring and insulation! I'm already retired so SS checks won't go far enough fast enough. I was so glad to see you complete your barn! It looks great!

Being a woodworker sawmill logger man for 45 plus years myself, I say you have done the correct thing to get a good handle on your infrastructure in the earlier years of your burgeoning career. The upfront expense can be daunting but you have eliminated the most ever nagging aspect of being able to work due to weather , space constraints, and material protection and organization. You have many accomplishments already in hand that so many of us who pay as we go and accommodate as we can continue to grapple with. In the end a personal commitment, integrity and follow through is the key ingredient to success in anything. Separates thinkers from do thinkers. You have it in spades. You are going to be more than fine. Stay healthy and let those awesome tools keep the heavy lifting to a physical minimum. I am curious if you wish to be more of a Sawyer or maker? My experience is there are enough seasons for both. Best wishes this New Year

Thanks for sharing the cost break-down of your "Barn-Thing" Matt. There will always be those who have a better plan to do it this way or that way, but at the end of the day/week/month if it does what you need it to do then that's all that matters. Also, with all the work, pain, and sweat you added to the project, you can always say 'I helped build my barn!' It really does look good on the property and the view is awesome. When you add on the lean-to portion, don't forget to add some relaxing space so that you can sit outside and enjoy the space and view after working for several hours inside or around your big red barn.

Matt speaking from experience, soooo worth it. I put up a 40' x 60' 2 story shop into a hill 20 years ago and have never regretted it. I hired out the shell but hoofed every block for the 12 foot basement for the masons. 10' clear span upstairs makes for a nice wood shop. Now that I'm retired, like you I'm starting to build kitchen cabinets for our 1853 farm house. You will find it is so satisfying to look back and know you put all the effort in (and with Donovan's help) and it payed off. Again kudos for the excellent videos of the build and all the things associated with a project of this size.

The longer I watched the better I felt. My building certainly isn't as big but the cost that I have into it (as of 20 years ago) is probably in the neighborhood of $16k-$17k for a 30x56. Had I known, I may have invested a lot more in big sheds and less in my 401k.

Going back just 6 years, the cost of the build would have been 30-40% lower. And that's just factoring materials. If you were to factor in real-estate... Ugh, don't want to think about it.

What I have lost on my 401K I could have built his building and had something, I will probably never get it back. His building will probably appreciate in value so he will make money on it. When he is old and has to sell it he will be able to afford a nice old folks home to live in. We pay $5000 a month for my mother to stay at a nice place.🙂

@@espressomatic we just bought a lot for more than we've ever spent on a single-family house :) it's kinda painful but hoping it will be a sound investment in the long run

Great job. That stupid barn thing is a fantastic addition to your endeavours. You will forget about the tired achy muscles before long. Also the headache of having to make a zillion decisions along the way. It is basically done and now you can start to reap the rewards of this. No more restrictions and cost of leasing. All of your work basically consolidated into one area, and that is just out your back door. As your kids grow the ability to hands on teach them with what they are interested in. Another feather in your cap. I have been watching your videos since you had your first saw in the suburbs. I have been watching all of your hard work over the years, and having the chutzpah to take the risks that you have. Congratulations. Now stop for a second and take a deep breath. Look back at where you started and where you are now at. Now give yourself a pat on the back. You deserve it.

You should be very proud at how the stupid barn thingy came out. It looks awesome and you'll have great use of it for as long at you keep that property. Once you complete the lean-to along the side, you'll have some additional great covered space. Awesome work by all! Happy New Year, wishing all the best in 2023 from Oregon.

Thank you for the video and your explanation of the entire building .You can be very proud of the achievement you have delivered. Every step, every work, everything you create gives you the inner warmth that drives the engine of life in you. It doesn't need any outside influences to keep you going. I think I've always been like this (76 years) acted and get what you eventually recognize and also get, happiness and satisfaction. Keep living like this, the rest surrender, All the best to you and your family and a happy and blessed New Year from Germany

Great video, Matt! A really succinct, and yet inclusive summary. As others have said, you are nearing the end of a journey you started when you decided to DIY a sawmill. Hopefully by the spring you will be able to settle into this new building and you will be back to productively using what you have built. Be happy, man! Look at what you have done and rejoice... then go do some wood working! FYI, I am at the beginning of the my workshop build, just discussing with contractors and so on. Thank you again and again for all the insight this series of videos provides.

Awesome building fella! Really enjoyed watching your progress. We are very similar. It’s crazy how some people find it a task to simply hang a picture frame on the wall, and there’s people like us that take on a major house renovation and go right into another massive project like building this barn.
