I own a 1999 Tacoma single cab 4wd that I bought new. It's never been used for anything other than the occasional home depot run and a few weekly errands. It's the base model 2.7L in 056 natural white with no power options. It's never been driven off road or in the rain and always garaged. A true time capsule that gets a crazy amount of attention whenever I take it out.

Historically a Turbo engine simply doesn’t last as long as a Naturally Aspirated (NA) engine. That’s why I chose to buy a new 23 TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed, with the Premium and Technology pkgs with the TRD Performance exhaust system, instead of waiting for an identical 24 TRD Turbo. My last Toyota with a 3.5L NA V6 had just over 300K miles and it still wasn’t burning or leaking oil. I LOVE the 3.5L V6, but the 4.0L V6 was a better engine. I change the oil and filter every 5K miles and change the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid every 30K miles. I’m a maintenance NUT and that’s why our vehicles last so long.

@@user-yn4cn3el5q Is that what Toyota is making now ? Nope, that’s why it won’t last 250K to 300K miles like a naturally aspirated engine. About a month ago I got a pretty good deal on a '22 TRD Sport double cab 4x2 fully loaded with the premium and technology packages, 25k miles, first owner had it serviced religiously every 5k miles, for $36,800, and a lifetime powertrain warranty was included in the price! Put 10k down and financed the rest. Wanted to get a low mileage used one since I foolishly didn't buy a new one when I had the chance and I'm not interested in the 4th Gen. Already had the AWE true dual exhaust installed(which sounds amazing btw with no drone) and just had the OTT tune done 2 days ago which absolutely transforms the way the truck drives and I highly recommend it to anyone on the fence about doing it, worth every penny! I also added a drop in AFE high flow dry air filter, I blacked out the Taco and V6 badges as well as the Tacoma stamped on the tailgate. I'm also installing full LED taillights with a black housing and smoked lens and Tri-LED headlights with a black housing because I can't stand the chrome on the stock lights. Also had it ceramic coated. Love this truck more every day and I'm never getting rid of it!

Any gasoline engine that is turbocharged needs additional or more frequent maintenance. They run hotter and engines and gaskets tend to have lightly higher pressures. Ford and Honda are discovering those issues. Even though Toyota entered this late in the game, there are just issues that are innate to using this type of engine.

I seriously was thinking of trading it in for a new Tacoma but decided I'll be holding on to my Tacoma a little longer. The only trouble I had was the alternator went bad and had it replaced. Snagged up the 24 after researching & am very, very grateful the opportunity arose to get it & I really like it!! I do like the looks of the 25 trail hunter, but don't like that u can't get some of the options that the 24 has, like manual shift transfer case & I really don't think a 4 cylinder is going to need an 8 speed transmission, & I'm sure I would not like the price of the 25.

I really believe it's going to affect all the previous Toyota models. Like you say, definitely in regards to the used ones you showed, but I think it's going to cause a jump in second gen Tacomas, and even fourth gen 4Runners. Those are still very reliable platforms and the 1GR-FE 4.0 is solid and well respected. Those who can't afford the fifth gen 4Runner, or a third gen Tacoma, may be willing to pay for a good older Toyota. It certainly makes it seem like a worthwhile investment to refresh my old 4th gen 4Runner and just keep driving it. It's at 288k currently and been an excellent vehicle. I hope Toyota realizes that not everyone is as excited about turbo engines as they think.

Toyota fanboy here. If you are interested in a mid to low mileage V6 auto Tacoma, you might want to consider a Frontier instead. They are comparable in reliability, better auto transmission, more unique, etc and you can get a brand new Pro-4X(their top trim) for the price of a used TRD Offroad Tacoma. Keep in mind, build quality is the same, if not better on the Frontier, plus it will have ZERO wear and tear and a FULL warranty. Additionally, if you want a modern mid size truck that could last to 1,000,000 miles, and all you care about is reliability, find a Tacoma with a 2.7 inline 4. Try to find one with a manual trans and it will last your lifetime. Just my $0.02

Sorry, even if Toyota or somebody else offered to trade me a 2024 Tacoma trd pro straight up for my 2022 trd pro, I’d have to say no. The fourth gen is significantly cheaper overall than the previous gen!😳

Well said brother even if free repair service for life was offered on the new ones. Sad to say but why pay way more for a way less reliable vehicle? No thanks, but good luck to those who waited and do/will regret not pulling the trigger earlier. -Team Toyota since 1985!

I love the old Tacoma but another old Tacoma owner talking bad about the new one because they probably wanted to upgrade but saw the price increase so they’re blaming the engine. Let’s be honest, the average 2023 car sold price was 48,000 - you can Google this. The Tacoma has definitely increased in price throughout the years but it’s just average. The 65-70k comment that old generation owners love to make are complete gibberish. First off, that’s only for the TRD PRO and Trailhunter for 65k. Most owners today with the current gen don’t even have a TRD Pro anyways so your average Tacoma owner will not spend more than 50k on a new generation Tacoma which is inline with the AVERAGE new car price. Lastly, why do old gen owners talk about turbo engines like they’re new? They been out for decades. You don’t think Toyota hired someone from a German car company who is familiar with turbo engines? Come on now, the new Tacomas with smaller engines are faster, stronger, better looking than the previous gen. Old gen owners are so salty and jealous. Yea I know it’s expensive but it’s just your average priced car. The 65-70k reference is bull… as if everyone drives a PRO lol. Not sure where you live in SoCal but there’s a lot of discounts on old gen 4Runners and Tacomas up north.

I actually don't like my third gen very much. I'm pretty sure I wouldnt buy the new gen. Really if I wanted to go the turbo 4 route I think I would buy one of the gm twins. Not the new gen Tacoma . I think a lot of people are upset because they feel like they are being " priced out" of the market. Most of the people buying these it's because they can't afford to spend 75k on a full-sized GMC. So they pick up these smaller trucks cheaper. But over the last years the small and midsized truck segment has increased in price as well. If you were a person just hardly affording a truck before, these increases are going to hurt. Far as the turbo. I would prefer not having one if keeping a vehicle . More concern, more maintenance. If it was short term I'd take a turbo, or a lease. The trucks still in it's first model year. Tundra had issues. It's probably going to be okay but we will have to wait. Honesty if I was going to get a turbo it sure wouldn't be a Tacoma. Maybe a Porsche 911 😂😂😂. If it was a inline turbo diesel in the Tacoma I'd feel more comfortable with that. Either way it's not just about the turbo. The truck went up in price where a lot of it's customers will have trouble getting another one. Its also a new design, more complicated, always should avoid the new design for at least a year or two. There is also moving more production to Mexico. Lot of people are upset about that. And the quality issues that could result, or have resulted. Plus the sharing the platforms basically makes the Lexus, 4 runner, land cruiser, Tacoma pretty much all the same vehicle. Toyota cut corners hard. Even worse than they were before. And I actually think my tacoma they totally cut corners on. The new gen is probably built even crappier. But time will tell. I'm waiting to see how the frames hold up.

@@janetairlines1351 , it's due to CAFE requirements and factors in the entire product range. Combined Average Fuel Efficiency. Toyota has a lot of offset goals with their vast lineup.. Same thing with Lexus. That's why I bought a 2022 RX450h with the V6. Still does 31 in town . Max GX450 can do 21.3 back and forth to Montana, of course it will only last about 500,000 miles.

I'm keeping my 2007 Tundra with 241,800 miles, til the day they plant me. It's in great shape mechanically and body wise. Why would I ever trade it in on a new one when they are so unreliable and expensive? I went to Denver and bought my Tundra in 2022 with 213,000 miles on it. I was that confident in Toyota that I bought a high mileage truck. The new ones will never make it to 200,000 miles or more.

I get everybody’s reservations, but obviously they don’t know history. When the 1-ur and 1GR/2gr first came out there was recalls and problems out the butt. Anything from blown head gaskets, catastrophic failures, stretched timing chains, but everybody apparently has amnesia ha ha ha ha. If you do research and actually see exactly what Toyota has done to this four-cylinder to make it reliable, you understand and safe purchasing one. Are they going to be growing pains? Yes absolutely just like there was with the engines of 15 years ago that are now known as being legendary the 2.4 turbo and the 3.4 twin turbo will be legendary because they will continue to get revisions and updates within, five years it will be absolutely rock solid. In addition to that all manufactures use consumer grade turbo Toyota/Lexus is the only one who is using a commercial grade turbo charger.
