New electric-vertical-takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) aircraft such as the Lilium Jet could start entering service in 2025. Advanced air mobility pioneers say they will transform how we move around crowded cities and potentially connect communities in a more cost-effective way. With battery-powered propulsion systems, they can fly without producing carbon emissions and are far quieter than traditional aircraft. BJT had a chance to sit in one of the first eVTOL cabins to get a feel for what the future of flight might be like.

Unfortunately no news at all. I believe that eVTOL like $Joby and $LILM will gain significant market share and compete even with ground mobility (cars) as costs per mile will come down hugely. In about 5 yrs energy density of batteries will be std about 500-700 wH/kg instead of current 220. On this way still some hurdles to take, but this is unstoppable. Can’t predict timing but will be sooner than many think.

couldn't agree more. in the farther future, we might even have quieter propulsion systems - fluidic or electroaerodynamic, but they are probably minimum few decades away until they can replace rotors and ducted fans.

Absolutely stunning & the methodicism Lilium has put into consistent step-by-step safety testing alone is a moat only Lilium can offer the eVTOL industry. Being the quietest eVTOL is yet another moat only they can provide and a leg up in intercity/regional air mobility

How can you state it is the quietest eVTOL when it never ever flew at full payload? Or even manned...

Taxis must be Ready at places where the Flying Cars stop, if necessary ! Also, Charging it is done at that place to pick up when the owner returns to Fly again in it. It is needed until they can fly 5000 miles at a stretch in future. Then, they can run on the streets too, without needing any help from Taxis !

Lilium is optised for short run way lift electric planes. It's design solution means that is burns through too much battery on vertical takeoff and landing. It reduce this by using its wings to lift it and u like a normal planes it only needs a short runway. Lillum can not compete with Joby etc. Joby is optimised to carry more people for vitical and lift within @100miles. They are indeed taxis. Lilium is needed but for 250miles and it can do this on a short runway whilst Joby can not.

For mass transit it must be fully automated. The simpler, less expensive answer is eSTOL with 'blown' wing using electric propellers spread along the main wing. One company has demonstrated a 100 metre runway is adequate. Given rules for electric helicopter flight paths and suitable landing areas, eSTOL is just as suitable access wise, and can use existing light aircraft certification processes, and normal flight training and pilot certification. eSTOL has fewer moving parts, no transitions between different flight modes, thus is far cheaper to implement. Alas, investors have gone 'sexy' over practical, so we have no eSTOL/eVTOL in the market. I know AIN does not like to criticise makers, but the current mis-step should be pointed out

100 % agree... eSTOL is so much simpler, works and also allows for engine out gliding. Never understood why everyone wants VTOL when every football field can be used by ESTOL.

There is a major issue when it comes to evtol and it has nothing to do with their business model, It has to do with the air, the very atmosphere they will be zoned to fly thru. Such aircraft will be low altitude flying like most light class aircraft, problem is.. low altitude flight is within what is typically termed as dirty air. Dirty not simply because it very much is within the range of polluted air, but moreso it a term representing air that not stable. Very turbulent air. You get a bit of this upon takeoff and especially upon landing approach into airports. the sudden bumps, humps slips sliding depending of the air quality and weather conditions. Its also the air most met with storms, rain, hail, thunderstorms etc. Such small aircraft will bump around quite a bit even on good days. as such passengers would really be uncomfortable in such conditions, and thats with a pilot, god knows how passengers would feel going thru such conditions riding in an automated aircraft. This is not a problem easilty resolved either, because such craft are not designed not intended to fly at higher clean air altitudes.

20 minutes of flight, no gliding ability so requires a chute, chute won't work uf youre less than 100 feet from ground and a gust of wind flipping it would mean death. Future? Ehh, its a neat design but this reminds me of that composite sub

A plane can fly if one engine malfunctions, and most can fly with 1 engine. What happens when just one of these engine's shuts down

It's designed to have redundant engines for that very reason. No more lopsided pulls to the left or right trying to make it to an air field. It can continue as planned and be serviced at its destination

Exactly, for example Lilium Jet has 30 ducted fans @@EarthCreature.
@sacr3
@sacr3 8 ай бұрын
30 fans means a hell of a lot more parasitic drag and friction to overcome, which requires more juice from the battery, lowering its range. Having wings with windmills if you lose power means no real gliding ability, and they can't change the pitch of the blades for autorotation like a helicopter which means no safe landing. So its parachute dependent on failure, which won't work if youre less than 100 feet from the ground. The design also means if you get a gust and flip, youre virtually done for. 20 minutes of flight on a full charge with a full crew This is only the future if they can manage all of these issues. Hence why they're waiting till 2025 for certification in hopes their battery tech can be improved. I dont know about this one.
