Making a sanding mop is pretty easy, and they are a useful tool in sanding curves or small parts. Cutting through the sandpaper will really destroy your blade though, so make sure you take that into consideration when making one.

Thanks. "How not to" videos are often more useful than "How to" videos.

When i made mine, i just tore them all. I didnt make them are narrow as you, but when i did was i clamped 2 sections of wood along the inner portion to act as the tear stop, basically i put the paper up to the edge of metal and quickly tore the paper inwards using the metal edge of the table as the tear line, stopping at the wood.

Ouch! Yeah, you're basically sawing through the equivalent of a grinding wheel made up of one part silicon carbide, one part glue and two parts cloth. You're probably better off putting on your favorite podcast, grabbing a cold beer and spending 20 minutes tearing two or three sheets at a time by hand. But experience is the best teacher! Thanks for sharing.

Haha, can laugh now, but in the moment when I realized what happened... I was... a bit mad at myself. Don't want anyone else to make the same mistake.

Great tutorial. I like the discussion of blade options. Seems like destroying a jig saw blade might be the cheapest option. I like the suggestion the viewer gave for a hacksaw blade but definitely more muscle action.

Thanks Mike, ya some disposable blades for a jigsaw might be a good option, or hacksaw. I haven't had to make another set yet, so will try a few options next time around. Thankfully, these seem to last me a while, so not a frequent project.

Good idea and thanks for your post. I used the same method but, instead of using my bandsaw, I made mine using (cheaper) jig saw blades. Thanks.

I used a cheap set of hd sissors and did 2 sheets at a time. Made enough for 2 wheels in about 40 min.

Yes, i think siccors is the way to go. Normally I would think that the siccors gets sharpened by cutting sandpaper? Maybe not if you go to the extreme, but I remeber seing a guy saying that you could sharpen a siccors by just cutting sandpaper?!

I’ve made a few. I made hack saw blades fit into my respirating saw. Wasn’t difficult. Cut to length, drill a hole and cut a notch in one end the same shape as store bought blades. You will need a lot of blades. Still cheaper to make a mop than buying one.

just use scissors, or utility knife to cut. both can be sharpened and reused. no problem. techincally your bandsaw blade can also be resharpened too, though it is not as easy.

If your bandsaw blade is a chisel tip tip flip your blades the teeth are upside down ,reinstall and turn the saw on ,lightly touch the the blade with a diamond dressing stone (NOT a grind stone etc. ) this can redone several times . I I started doing this 65 years ago.

A other alternative is take a old blade and grind all the teeth off and grind a wavy knife edge ,I made this blade 30 years ago to cut fabric for a friend ,did 25 layers of fabric for a quilt. Out of curiosity I still use the same blade for odd jobs on my 30 inch 1907 bandsaw, to sharpen use a old grind stone at slight angle.

Can you just cut the strips with a scissor?

Only way to cut these is with a band saw, but then the cost of a band saw blade which you will wear out becomes more expensive than buying one from amazon

This begs the question of how to cut decent quantities sandpaper without abrasion. I wonder of a hot wire cutter could manage it. I might give it a shot. ... or maybe an abrasive cutting disc on a chop saw?

Just use a stanley knife or craft knife. The blades cost next to nothing. Carbide Stanley knife blades are great

in the future you might want to try using a hacksaw blade they're a lot cheaper in the long run. I'm just saying good luck.

Paper backed instead of cloth backed? Almost surely because it's what I had. Cloth would probably work better.

How about just using a utility knife and cut on the back side? Those are a dime a dozen.

Haha, true, and that would work. Gotta do a lot of cutting though. Thankfully, they last a while, so still using this one.
