As a psychology trained person who works with people with OCD, I think the research is not super sufficient with regards to how it truly affects the holistic person. I have seen firsthand how foundational respect and love are to any mentally ill person's healing. Without that foundation, little amount of exposure therapy or denying of compulsions can really go far in reducing the anxiety itself. Just my two cents though, and I am sure those living with OCD will have more intelligent things to say on this!

My parents just told me I was crazy and kept doing things even average people would find gross and it made my walls of OCD go up more from feeling so disrespected and uncared for. I wanted to fight my compulsions less from being treated so unloveingly

allison, i have harm ocd especially with animals so the rummaging through the laundry is SO relatable cuz im always thinking i put one of my foster kittens in the laundry. it sucks because sometimes when my fosters get adopted its like a sigh of relief cuz so much of my stuff goes away, but i LOVE fostering so i dont wanna feel relief when i dont have any! anyway ya just wanted to say that i go through the laundry too sometimes when its soaking wet lmao

yet again everything Allison says I'm just nodding along like, yup, me too, that's 100% correct lol. I used to feel that "false memory" thing about taking my pills and I started to say out loud, "OK I'm taking my pill now" because that way if I said it out loud I would be more likely to remembered it happening. Maybe you should get weekly pill box for your tide pods lollll. Also, from one frequent hand washer to another, I love the bar soaps from Kona Natural Soap Company, I discovered them on vacation in Hawaii, and the bars have little like scrubby material in them so you feel really clean but they don't dry out your hands, fabulous!

Watching you talk about your OCD and the impact on yourself and your partner is so validating. I was in a long-term relationship with someone with untreated contamination OCD similar to yours. I never got the kind of assurance and self-awareness you have gotten to with your partner. It's so healing to hear you give him grace for not having the same "rules" as you etc.

I have some OCD-adjacent stuff going on (trich and dermatillomania) and anxiety and depression. What Allison said a while ago about taking a harm reduction viewpoint of her illness has been a gamechanger for the way I view living my life with these issues. I also work in the addiction space, so this was such an easy concept to grasp, and I don't know why I had never considered giving myself the same grace before. Genuinely, thank you!

the problem is not what antibacterial wipe you wipe your innocent dog with, the problem is needing to clean it unnecessarily in the first place. this is a therapy issue, not a problem with the dog…cleaning them that often is not good for their skin barrier and can lead to more infection longterm, ironically.

For the tide pods issue, I’d recommend leaving a visual indicator that you did put a pod in. For example, leaving a post it on the detergent container that you move to the laundry machine after you put the pod in. In my house we’re constantly unsure if the cats have been fed so we leave empty cans (just for that day) near their bowls so we have a visual indicator that we did feed them.

Super interesting to hear! My partner also struggles with ocd and probably as do I (still in the process of getting diagnosed). Mine is very different but his is a LOT like yours. He also has mental rules of not sitting on certain things with street clothes or compulsions of asking me if I have washed my hands. He always apologizes afterwards bc on one hand he realizes it’s kind of unfair to bring other people into his compulsions. But way more importantly his therapist has told him not to do it as reassurance actually worsens his condition. I do find it sometimes hard to juggle wanting to reassure him that nothing bad is going to happen but also knowing I’m not actually supposed to do that.

It's incredible how we can be so unreasonable in some things and then flexible in others with ocd. Years ago i made a rule to myself that my ocd could never affect my pets, so whatever other contamination fear i have, it never extents to Lilo (my dog), she just has to live her life and she can be on my bed and it's fine. Same for people sitting on my bed and touching my things, however, my things or myself touching something I don't want? Huge problem. I haven't sat on my own couch without having to shower after for a whole year. We do what we can, thanks for talking about it, Allison ❤

It would be so incredibly helpful if Alison felt comfortable enough to talk about how her OCD impacts her sex life. My partner has OCD and it can be so hard when it impacts our sex life and I feel like I’ve never heard someone with OCD talk about this aspect. Tip for the OCD girlies with hand-washing problems: get a big tub of Aquaphor (or small, if you want to try it out/have specific texture needs, etc.); it really, really helps. It always feels so nice and healing and takes away the pain immediately!! It's so life-changing, it's incredible! Especially if you put it on at night, you can wake up in the morning with softer hands that feel better/don't hurt. :) Good luck everybody, you can get through this! P.S. Thank you for talking about these things Allison; I feel so seen! You are helping people :)

One thing about this, though, is that if it gets on fabric, it might leave a residue. One way you could get through this is having specific gloves that you wear when you use Aquaphor. There are some cotton gloves that could work for this, so that they are breathable and reusable.

I imagine that liquid is messy, hence the tide pods. Laundry sheets are another idea, though both sheet and the pods contains micro plastics that some water filtrastion systems may not filter out. They do make solid tabs out of the powders with no plastic in them now. You might be able to put those in the little detergent slot.
@molly4556
@molly4556 4 ай бұрын
or with liquid you could keep a little pot on the counter that is durable to measure out the liquid and then throw whole the pot in to the laundry with your clothes. if the pot isnt on the counter youve added your detergent.

I'm happy to hear Allison finally address how her OCD tendencies can come across as incredibly rude, especially to those who don't know her or what she is dealing with. Having a mental illness is tough, however, we can't just expect the average person to understand or even care about how deeply it affects us and we need to be prepared at how rude (the things we can say or do to mange it) can come across to others.

I’m curious. Would narrating what you’re doing help your brain “know” things have been done? As someone who’s memory sometimes isn’t the greatest, I often announce things I need to remember as I’m doing them. I don’t have ocd but wondered if at laundry time, saying something out loud like, “pod’s in, clothes next, press start” would help. (I’m rooting for you.)

Weird suggestion but could you count out say 10 pods and put them in a labelled container (like for pills). I'm assuming you do laundry maybe daily? Or at regularly where you could label each section with the day, and then if that day is empty you know you put it in already. Or even simpler, a whiteboard/notepad next to the machine with a tick box that you tick or write the date on when you put the pod in. Then if you doubt yourself after you can just check and see that today's date is there, so you don't need to rifle through to find it (maybe). Or you could use powder that goes in the drawer and then you can just open the drawer to see if it's there before starting the machine. Don't know if any of that is helpful,I'm always doubting my memory/getting fake memories of taking my meds as it's something I do daily so I can never remember if my memory is from that day or a different day! So I use a labelled packet

It's disappointing to see you putting the OCD "research" in quotes like that when Exposure Response Prevention therapy is tested and effective and has 100% changed my life. ERP and medication will change your life and free your mind to think about things other than your obsessions and compulsions
@RinKagamineIsAmazing
@RinKagamineIsAmazing 4 ай бұрын
I think to be fair to Allison, she has had OCD since she was 4 years old and has very likely been through ERP with limiting success and now currently has to find a balance between giving herself grace and also not giving into compulsions too much. She even pushes back in the video against Gabe when he says that he finds ERP to be bullshit. She also gives resources to the OCD foundation which I'm sure is a strong proponent of ERP. I'm sure that Allison believes in the research, but has personal and complex feelings about it because she will likely never be 'cured' of OCD and now has to find a way to manage her life and also be kind to herself. Like, imagine if your entire life was an uphill battle where all the research showed that your anxieties should never be taken seriously and nobody should ever indulge you in easing them (and they were right, to some extent), but you also knew that you had to live your whole life with these same anxieties. The idea of "nobody should ever give you reassurance or indulge your compulsion" would feel super unempathetic when you've lived your entire life already fighting this and you will likely continue your whole life fighting this.

It’s worse that it affects the dog’s lives, dogs do not need to be wiped with antibacterial wipes…bacteria is literally everywhere, and isn’t always bad. I would base their need for cleanliness off what vets recommend and work on those personal issues apart from whether or not the dogs are “dirty from the floor”. Just don’t let them on your bed and wash your hands after you touch them if you want to do what you can control?
