I had some 10+ year old Maxfli wedges I only bought because they were black and looked cool haha... just replaced them with nickel TaylorMade MG2's. Love them! I have been practicing my short game quite a bit, but they spin like crazy. I'm sure they'll last me quite a while.

I've got a 55 degree Square Strike in the bag and as a returning player to the game I find it to be so versatile. I always describe it as being like a hybrid for your wedges. The 55 degree one even gives you the option of even playing it over creeks around greens and out of bunkers where the sand is wet.

Roger Cleveland, on a Callaway podcast, said amateur golfers should change their wedges every year or six months depending on how often they play. He mentioned Rory and others who get new wedges every tournament or every other tournament. Of course Roger doesn't have to pay for wedges..lol. And fwiw, just received my MD5 Jaws wedges and will put them to use today.

I’ve had most of the top name wedges in my bag over the years. Just purchased and gamed the Kirkland wedges that Rick reviewed and liked. $160 usd delivered to my door for a 52, 56, & 60. Think these are going to be the ones that will stay in the bag. Especially since I can replace all three for the price of one name brand.

It also depends on the forged/cast. I’ve played forged Mizuno T20’s, and as someone who practices frequently AND gets in ~120 rounds a year, I can tell that they’ll need replacing by end of this summer.
@ipotato95
@ipotato95 3 жыл бұрын
If you’re a regular player/practice often, you should be changing out your wedges probably every two years at most. Clean your grooves and sharpen them without making them “U grooves” to get more use out of them. Wedges do lose their spin over time but it’s not as realistic for us to replace them as often as the pros that get them for free do.

Also tour pros know, what kind of wedge they need in certain conditions and change from tournament to another, cause all bounces don’t work in all turf and course conditions. For amateur golfer wedge is a big investment as they cost well over 100 quid new. I think playing on a poorly conditioned course, your wedges wear out rather soon due all the debris, sand grain and what not. So it is not only a time, but also wear and condition issue as well as the number of rounds you play a season and how much you practice. I am playing around 120 to 150...180 rounds a year and use same wedges for two seasons in general. However I would like to get new every year or twise a year cause they wear so much. A new wedge spinns really that much more on half shots and in chipping, that you become cautious, when the grooves become destroyed, cannot trust how the ball behaves.

The issue with chippers and hybrids (a chipper with less loft on a longer, flatter shaft) is that if you have to use me you have never been shown or told how an iron is meant to be used. They are a manufacturers attempt - like an adjustable driver, like bounce on a club, like offset - to mitigate a faulty concept. I think the person that finally communicates how to use an iron in an applicable way will have cracked it. Where you say ‘you can just use your nine iron’ I’ve spent time with someone trying to encourage them to putt with a 9 iron, but they couldn’t do it, still flipped at it. Whereas they could putt a chipper. It’s not that different. But put an iron in their hand and the scoop instinct came back instantly.

Love the content and the episode. I would like to hear your perspective on how much improvement (technology wise) a 2021 wedge has vs a wedge made in 2000. Assuming it has only been used lightly, would there be a significant difference in performance to justify getting new ones?

Wedge replacement time based on rounds makes no sense at all. During a round I might use my wedges 2-5 times each per round, but between rounds I might hit 100 wedge shots. So really it depends on how often you practice.

I think golfers would replace their wedges more often if the prices weren't becoming so ridiculous. Becoming almost as bad as drivers, trying to make a niche product out of it ie: grinds etc. The gains in different wedge grinds are marginal

@@deanh891 Ehhh yes really. You go back 30 years, so players like Seve, Faldo & Norman all just played standard wedges with standard bounce. Ok you could argue that those players still popped in the tour van and has it tweaked slightly but that no different now. But to have all these various grinds, thats just nonsense. Its just a marketing device to get joe public to spend money and with that they can increase the prices

Too many people act and think like they are on the PGA tour...most of us are just casual players, may be members at clubs but have full time jobs. Stop taking it too seriously and you will have more fun. Yes you want to be good and be as good as you can be but I’m sorry, an average weekend player doesn’t need to be deliberating over what type of £40 box of golf balls to use.
