We're taking it back with this one. Bring Me The Horizon absolutely dominated the scene in deathcore's infancy, and even though BMTH has moved away from the heavier side of things, Pray for Plagues is a great example of how doing things wrong can still sound cool. So lets talk about vocals and how we can make these sounds more safely!

Huh, what a coinkidink! I sudddenly had the urge to listen to this song this couple of days too! Aye man, got 2 question for ya, if you are willing to answer 'em, that is. Hope I;m not inconviniencing you too much' a) Where did that urge, that came unto the community, that made high register vocals a must at that time you were speaking, come from? Did it come from the Punk side (Hardcore/Post-Hardcore/Emo/Skramz/Crust/etc.) or the Metal side (the Melodeath/Symphonic Black Metal/Etc. at the time). As far as you are concerned, from your point of view? b) Have you/your band gotten some blowback from the community, for incorporating the more Atmospheric side of Deathcore and Death Metal, along with Shoegaze? You know how puritan some people can be, right? Keep going on with the hussle, man. I hope you guys realize how special you guys are...being open-minded as you guys' are, and keep going strong, yes ,even in this economy, lel. Cheers! Now, time for me to wait for another set of bands, that are willing to incorporate seemingly weird shit together, again, to crop (Come on, guys, Deathcore/Doom? Slamming Beatdown Death/Doom? Progressive/Avantgard Blacken Deathcore, the legit kind, not just techy for the sake of it? Math/Death/Core? MathCrust? Skramz/DSBM, like duhhh? Progressive/Tech Doom, but not the Sludgy kind like old Mastodon? Shred Metal/Math Rock? Trappy/Phonky Metal, but ya know, guitar-driven. the reverse? Extreme metal/Horrorcore Rap, with rappers who actually have flow and cadence? Yes I know about Extreme Horrorcore and Wigga Slam, but you know... Any other ideas for nonexistent hybrid genres. guys?) Oh yeah, Have you done a vocal analysis on the band Dir En Grey? Bye! Sorry for the long whole-ass novel that I;ve just written! lel

Thanks mark, awesome video. I love that you explained some "rookie mistakes" in this video, like the unintentional vocal strain that can happen if you "wheeze" into it at 9:37. Together with an example of how to recognise such pitfalls are super helpful! Especially if it's something that doesn't hurt in the moment, but will damage-over-time.

This video has actually helped my realise i was quite possibly damaging my vocals recording my current songs, with talks about specific types of damage that arent immediately noticeable, ive definitely noticed my only problem nowadays is the whingey unsettled voice behind pitched screams, even when im not feeling tense in the throat or anything else that are telltale signs. I'll definitely be honing in on learning how to blend proper spoken voice with screams. Tysm!!

Honestly, this has been the most informative and helpful video I have watched from you so far. Very insightful. Keep it up man! So I would probably guess that I have some vocal chord issues these days and I wouldn't be a bit surprised as to why either lol. Yeah, back in the days, years before hitting 2020, there were so few tutorial videos out there and you just went with what they said, wether it be 100% safe or not. I on the other hand did follow those steps but was also very eager at the same time to just learn things quick, while also wanted to sound like my favorite vocalists... Ended up with a damaged vocal chords due to tightening/staining them (cause ofc that's what many people back then thought you were supposed to do to get those cool sounds). Upon realizing how bad that was and at the same time it sounding like shit lol, I tried different techniques and approaches. I kept to that other technique for quite some time until it also started sounding bad there as well, so I realized I was probably doing it in an unhealthy way there as well. I went on with another technique after that which for some reason started conflicting with that technique i did before that and i got very frustrated about it... Now I've been taking some time to think if i actually did hurt my vocal chords back then and didn't give them enough time to heal (if they even can), so for now, I've decided to just take a very long break and hoping for the best. How long, I have absolutely no idea... Anyway, thanks for being (in my opinion) number 1 metal vocal coach out there! Cheers from Norway 🤘

Back then when I got into Metal, I first got into System of a Down, some Slipknot but then I found this... the video and the shrieking kinda scared me. For me, this was also the heaviest shit I ever listened to. But I soon after learned to love it... brings me back to my child hood days discovering new music. Nice commentary on this classic song. I always thought that he did lots of inhale growls, hence the airy weezy sound when he growls. Those are definately not healthy in the long run.

I've wanted a vocal coach to dissect some of BMTH's old stuff for a while not to show me WHY it's damaging. I've been looking into learning proper screaming for a while and I've seen tons of people tell me how to do it, but not what those whose vocals I like are doing WRONG. I like seeing you dissect a vocal performance I enjoy and not only picking it apart, but giving tips on how to do it healthily. Thank you so much for this video.

I remember the first time I heard BMTH! I think the year was 2005 (maybe 06). I'm 18 and my friend Tara had been to northern England to visit friends, and during that time she was taken to a gig. She came back home with a crudley sharpie drawn CD, and played it to us at her kitchen dining table. This was their EP, and Traitors was that flagship song! I was stunned by it, fell in love with it. Some months pass, and then I see Tara again, she is bouncing off the walls, grabs me, and screams at me. BMTH have been spotted, and are releasing a studio album! I hear Pray for Plagues, and my mind was blown. To this day, I regularly go back and listen to the EP and Count Your Blessings.

what is your opinion on people using a glottal onset on their vox over all? I've been doing vox about as long as you and ive always used a very mild onset on "I" "Oh" etc even on my bands stuff (nothing released yet) as well as my last band and have never noticed any vox issues. Should I stop?

Good question! I generally advise using it sparingly. Its just so easy to turn it into an attack, I personally reserve it for moments where I need a bit of impact. Using mixed onsets like y, w, r, and so on in place of glottal onsets not only takes effort away from the throat, it also has kind of evolved to be a staple sound in harsh vocals. So its a win win.

@@KardavoxAcademy fair enough, thanks for the reply I also use mixed onset as well especially with highs mostly but when i am doing regular onset it's tucked behind my distortion if that makes sense. I can only describe how it feels basically as if the distortion is padding the onset idk because im not looking at my throat from the inside

no matter how many videos I watch and the amount of time I put in it still hurts to try and scream, which means I cant really practice screaming for any useful amount of time. I don't think I have a strong enough mind to vocal cord connection to get them to do what im trying to.

gotta disagree with that. Man can barely hold a scream a lot of the time whne hes doing older stuff..which they do quite a bit live. His voice cracks consistently when doing highs. Saw them recently 3 times and everytime they did Plagues and older music he got super winded,

Hey Mark. I have a completely irrelevant question. In some of her recent videos, I've heard Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice refer to fry screams as constrictions higher in the throat, but Justin Bonitz's explanation makes it seem like the sound comes straight from the vocal cords. It almost seems like what Elizabeth is calling fry is what Justin calls fake fry. Am I completely off with my understanding? I'd appreciate any clarifications

The term fry is extremely slippery and there are some differing opinions on what a fry scream actually is. This is in large part because metal vocals evolved outside of traditional vocal pedagogy, often even looked down on, and because our understanding of most of these screams developed based on sound and guesswork. Outside of The Zen of Screaming, we didn't have video of these screams until fairly recently. Justin's explanation is more in line with how fry screams have been talked about within metal vocal circles for a long time, whereas Elizabeth's description tends to line up with how rock and other contemporary styles often describe it. This is why generally I try not to put too much weight on terminology. Its important, very important, but at the end of the day most vocalists are looking for a sound and sensation for their screams and I find following that to be the best route while treating some (not all) vocal terms as being more like lighthouses than laws. As for me personally, I tend to resonate a bit more with Justin's description since I came up in sweaty venues and mosh pits, haha. But if I was sitting and talking with Elizabeth I would probably just adapt to her terminology for ease of conversation.

It's actually a fan made rumour about him wrecking his vocals because he didn't do the technique correctly. I mean it's not the best way to scream. But the reason the wrecked his vocals was because he contracted laryngitis during their tour and he refused to cancel. And he could barely talk afterwards. For obvious reasons. If he had no technique at all he wouldn't get past a couple of songs screaming that way as you will know. It woukd really hurt very quickly. I mean he's doing eay better now. And defo lyrically.😂😂 These lyrics man. I got a reply from his vocal coach who has been working with him since thats the spirit. And he now religiously warms up his vocals before tours where he never used too because he felt stupid he said. Young and dumb as the saying goes. And Oli is self taught too. So he has learned alot along the way. The whole band are actually self taught. Which is pretty sick considering where they are today😊 Ived your break down

Did he really have vocal problems at this time? I only remember him having vocal problems when he started doing the shouting vocals from suicide season and on. But maybe my memory is wrong.
