Over the last decade, Man United have not often been associated with well-executed summer transfer windows, but 2023 looks to have been an exception, with top targets Mason Mount and Andre Onana signed by mid-July, and Rasmus Højlund now arriving to fix their problem centre-forward position. But whereas those first two enter Old Trafford as seasoned professionals in their prime, with Mount a Champions League winner, Onana a Champions League finalist and boasting almost 600 club appearances between them, Højlund is a relatively unknown entity at 20 and with just one season’s worth of experience in a top five league in which he hit just 9 goals.
It means that the fee United have agreed with Atalanta for his services, which could rise to £72million with add-ons, is undoubtedly an overpay, but one that coach Erik ten Hag clearly thinks is worth paying given the player’s age profile and potential. If he can deliver on his promise over a number of seasons, then the fee United have paid will be more than justified, with fans of the Red Devils having to cast their mind back to the days of Rooney and Van Persie for the last time the club boasted an elite centre-forward at their peak.
But such moves always carry a risk, and this may be the last time in a while that the Red Devils can gamble such money on a young striker. On this episode of FD Explained, we’re going to assess what impact Hojlund will have on the United attack, and how successful he can be in the Premier League.

Nah, he ain't gonna transform us. He makes us better, and gives us a focal point going forward. Our offense still very much will depend on Bruno and Rashford. Hopefully Højlund develops into a superstar, but it's going to take a bit of time.

@iwedimenheoma1123 hmm what I meant was that he's not going to be that important for us. He's not going to make us a title challenger by any means. He just offers us new looks on the attack. A transformative signing would be like Van Dijk to Liverpool, or Aguero to City, Kante to Chelsea, or Bruno to United. Højlund is more in the vein of Gabriel Jesus to Arsenal.

Just you wait till he plays then, our attacks will be completely different with a much better focus on hitting those key areas with cutbacks since we will have a player attacking those areas for once

I think the advvabtage is, is that he is a raw talent and ETH can trnasform him into the lethal attacker he imagines him to become. He has hard work ethic and raw talent. Give hime 2-3 years to develop under ETH and I think we might have a workd class striker on our hands

Simply having any striker in the team makes us much better. Hojlund's skillset will easily improve us. Whether he becomes a superstar or not isn't relevant just yet. How desperate we are for a striker + his potential makes the price worth it. 10-15 goals from him is really about all we need right about now.

We’re still short upfront. Martial can’t be relied upon. I know we have a bad track record for old strikers, but getting one in to take the pressure off Hojlund, wouldn’t be a bad idea.

think if we can sign an 6 such as Onana or Amrabat we could start with 4231 out of possession and switch to slightly lopsided 3412 in possession with shaw pushing allowing rashford to play inside and produce best work. RB tucking into RCB in possession. Antony slightly higher on right. Bruno 10. Rashford with hojlund uptop.

This guy is young and will take time to develop. 10+ goals from him in all tournaments and we can consider his signing to be a success initially. However, we need Sancho and Antony to step up massively in order to score goals. Otherwise finishing in the top 4 itself is going to be really difficult. Both Antony and Sancho don't give me faith that they are going to have a better season than the last, when I watched the matches in the pre-season as well as first match against wolves. Hopefully I am proven wrong.

Rashford has pace and flair. Rashford is not a no.9. playing back to the goal is a skill and being in the right place at right moment is something no.9 must have but Rashford doesn't have those. He is a Left winger and he'll play as the winger
