Only mistake I can see in this video is when he talks about how the many internal buildings create a flaw in the defense: I believe it is too bold to assume that The Mouse doesn't have his servants' quarters rigged to explode at a moments notice.

One thing I think to keep note of, in the castle introduction, you see a steam train and a city that looks to be from the late 19th century, it's likely that the building in the courtyard were added far after the castle had lost its use as a military structure, especially since the internal courtyard buildings have a 19th century urban almost Parisian look to them.

There is another fantasy castle/fortress (they call it fortress, even if its the home and centre of the antagonist and ruler of this game world), which might be unraidable by common armies: Ishar (if you go by its game origins), or if you have read some fantasy books, then you may know it as Anderras Darion (Chronicles of Hawklan). I prefer Ishar, and you may take a look at this fortress :) www.mobygames.com/game/ishar-legend-of-the-fortress/cover-art/gameCoverId,1262/ Painted by Mark Harrison. Also considering most castles in the equestrian territories dont seem to have the best defences besides the castle of twin sisters which is connected to land by a bringe over a huge drop off i dont want to know how canterlot would rate. Especially since it and the castle of two sisters was made with the knowledge that multiple flying races with armies exist i mean sure they had one of them but that doesnt discount that there is some bad design there

Watching this video I get the impression that the castle's weaknesses are due to newer construction, possibly from the owners changing focus from military defense to trade relations during a long peacetime. The courtyards could have once been clear and defensible, but have since been opened to the public. The higher towers without ramparts could have been built later, with intent to inspire, not to intimidate. It makes you wonder about the hypothetical history of a fictional castle. (Extra fictional, since it's not even from any of the actual stories)
@SullenSecret
@SullenSecret 6 жыл бұрын
If you think of this castle as having a history, those many buildings that are in the way of a courtyard may have been built during a later period that had peace. Therefore, its original design by its builders may have been strategically sound only to be replaced with the addition of more buildings when that was needed far more. I'm actually curious to see a Disney movie of the history of this castle. They could even get a whole trilogy out of it, assuming an interesting story. BTW, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. It's as excellent as... MACHICOLATIONS!
@HebaruSan

Disney probably wired those extra buildings with explosive charges so they could be leveled in case the courtyard is ever breached.

If I may expand on this..... Period one: Inner wall (open topped) only on an island protecting a moderate central building; founding of the kingdom. Period two: Addition of the outer wall (still open topped) to create the approach by boat only design; growth in power. Period three: Addition of roofs to the defensive walls and a tall watchtower (perhaps the highest tower still existing) overlooking the surrounding area; increased conflict Period four: Building up of the central keep's taller buildings; borders stabilize and potential attackers rarely manage to attack the growing tall structures. Period five: Building of courtyard buildings; peace reigns, but bandit raids common encouraging living within the walls.
@regallag888

I thought the same thing. Then I thought, maybe the internal structures were built on top of previous smaller structures that served as elevated platforms for trebuchets so they could outrange anything brought against them.

Very, very good review, Shad! Also, to put my 50 cents to the topic: I feel the reason of this castle's potential existence is not necessarily to protect the occupants of the castle, but to be a barrier or even abatis for the river. Notice how the castle has huge, huge gates and tunnel through! Also I disagree that the gates are meant for the castle's entrance, I feel they are to moderate merchant flow of the river. Please notice how behind the Disney Castle there is this large lake! Then this huge, defense-wise pointless, tall towers are not meant for repelling sieges, but are actually watch towers, possibly even having something along signal towers or lighthouse for merchant ships sailing on the lake! Secondly, I think that main entrances to the castle/palace are actually those two bridges at the sides of the castle, making it essentionally something akin to huge over the top barbican (?) at the top of the bridge over the river's estuary, moderating land flow of goods from one side of the river to other. Thirdly, I feel that this castle as depicted at the Disney's opening animation is something along the line of fictional modern-day rendering of much older castle, rebuilt and remade. Notice how in the background there is railroads and steam engine running. Also, there is evident electricity lighting up entire castle, which is somehow anachronistic. Therefore I deduct that the houses inside the castle's primary walls are built there MUCH later than the castle's historical and active times, being there for various, modern reasons (such as ie. accomodating bureaucrats, officers, lawyers and transit offices for the merchants crossing the river. That would also explain the lack of the moat, which probably existed from the bridge to bridge, but was unnecesary/problematic in later epoch and eventually filled in. Overall, I would never even think that Disney Castle could have such possible potential! Thank you, Shadiversity for being such a fuel for thougts!

I am not sure about if you've included what we have in the UK namely the fully functioning Buckingham Palace but really the best way of seeing that's like an Office of State really since our Monarch is our Head of State. The reality is no Monarch (certainly not from now on) is allowed to change the Palace without approval, their own apartments within it yes they can do whatever they want to theirs, of which two children of the Monarchs live there (are their fully registered addresses as such) those being Princess Anne (The Princess Royal, since she's the only daughter of the Monarch) and Prince Andrew (the Duke of York), their official apartment residences are actually at the front of the Palace whereas the Monarchs is actually when looking at it from the front is around the back to the right. Though of course it's Windsor that's the oldest of them all in this country, is used more for Celebrations really Buckingham's not used for much other than the HQ of Monarchy wasn't meant for celebrations as it's not really got any rooms for that kind of thing.
@jsmithmultimediatech
@jsmithmultimediatech 6 жыл бұрын
I do really enjoy by concept the same thing even really still a fully functioning one though even real Monarchies to say fictional ones, it's absolutely fascinating like I mean Victoria in the 1800's being the first Monarch to marry since she genuinely did love Prince Albert, before her was all about maybe the consolidation of power, wasn't ever much marrying for love, actually a lot of what we have (certainly the front of Buckingham Palace that's for certain and even some parts of the interior come from Victoria's son's reign, like the State Ballrooms never changed much since his reign if at all) comes from Victoria herself certainly recently anyway.

Loved it as always :) However i want to say that as a former civil engineering student, their is a bit of a problem : the river flows bellow the huge main keep, and I do not know if anyone would want to build such a massive stone building just on top of a river. It would actually make more sence to divert the river on the sides of the structure, to have a more solid basement for the foundations.
@ToxicBastard
@ToxicBastard 4 жыл бұрын
while I'm not sure of the the engineering side, the stratigic benifits would be great; easy resupply from friendly ships straight off the sea, even under siege, a good escape rout, control of the river, constant water, an easy moat, wetland caused by the stone foundations displacing water during high tides (making siege engines get bogged down) and maybe even flooding out attackers on high tide, putting attackers on a time limit.

Headcanon: The inner buildings were built in the castle after the many battles were fought, and it had overseen its use. Now the inner buildings that were built to fill up the space are not just for servants, but they are hotels, studios, houses, and even places for old pieces of sets and artifacts to be held. There could be tightly knit shops and taverns, places where tourists could come after their long train ride (if you don't recall the train in the title card the Disney Castle is featured in, that's fine.) It is a place where the ghosts and phantoms of past Disney Executives and Employees can roam, if not rest in peace. Disney Animations and 'Toons come to life with the characters running amok, and perhaps even going to the many parks by some means to light the spark of dreams in young children. Its the home of everything that Lord and King, Sir Walter Elias Disney had created in his time alone in a cramped apartment. and it is WAY more than just possible. To many, to those who still believe, it could be out there somewhere. Keep dreaming, kids. And keep up the great videos Shad. I would support you on Patreon if I had the resources.

Actually, to assault it would be suicide, but to siege it would be easy enough. It is clearly in a marsh, with a river running through it. That means your seigeworks need only cover the four points of access - the two bridges, upstream, and downstream. The downside is that while locking the castle in is easy, your forces will be quartered and at some great distance from each other over difficult land to traverse. The bridges likely have gatehouses or other fortifications where they meet land that would have to be taken, but once taken, defending the bridge from sally from the castle would be easy. Likewise, you could roll up your bombardment, fire a few volleys, and then withdraw at will with relative impunity. The river fortifications would be more to prevent resupply (by boat or barge). This could be augmented by "locking down" the portcullis for the river passage. Floating logs to get jammed in and through the portcullis would make the upstream side exceptionally difficult to raise. Because of this, I assume that those multiple buildings are primarily warehouses for storing and managing stores - since this is a castle that locks you as well as keeping the other guy out.
@2adamast
@2adamast 6 жыл бұрын
Assault: No outer gatehouse, locking the portculis (misplacing a sturdy walking stick in the rails) is probably enough to storm the castle. Siege: The towers don't protrude enough leaving the base of the walls unprotected for mining. A slant roof giving enough protection from any machicolation nastiness.

I will say that if they did breach the first wall those buildings could slow down the enemy quite a lot. Not only do they have to go around the buildings, it might be hard to bring up large siege equipment with how narrow the streets are, but if you chucked a couple guys with spears on those narrow streets they could be fairly hard to kill. It limits the avenues of approach to the main keep and keeps the larger enemy formations together which means your archers just need to aim at a concentrated blob.
@kaleckton
@kaleckton 6 жыл бұрын
Tarnfalk And if you could effectively block off sections and prevent people from entering the buildings you could leave arrowmen in each buildings or at least men with rocks or anything hard and damaging and chuck down while the enemy force attacked the spear men. And if you could move to the other buildings and leave behind a burning blaze of buildings before a ultimate retreat deeper into the castle you will have a bunch of useless buildings to the enemy that could cause damage by falling down on the enemy and blocking parts of the keep. But again the downside is you could not counter siege equipment with your own. Though it'd be interesting if they could have enough servants that they would be able to quickly demolish those buildings to reuse to increase the defenses of the castle quicker without the need of having to always keep supplies that are never used except for that one use. So hard to say either way.

Regarding the internal buildings, I like to think that these were added at a later period, when being defensible was no longer a concern. As shown in the Disney logo intro, this castle existed at least into the 1800s, when steam trains were running. So it's plausible that the internal buildings are a later addition. The same could be argued for the larger keep as well.

Another way the castle is defended is the side bridges would get in the way during a siege, limiting where they can set up catapults thanks to the rivers. The armies would also have communication and structure issues with having to split their forces up due to the bridges, essentially cutting the forces in half or eve into fourths.

6:30 well the short answer is "Forced Perspective" Also, in the logo's animated film, it is often obvious (in the long version) that the bridges on the sides are actually a train tunnel. The castle is constructed OVER a train trestle bridge. This means that it's not really a bridge designed for foot traffic at all, but also probably that there is a train station inside the castle. The odd thing is that the train track level is BELOW the top of the river tunnel. So either the train track stops, or there is a train track drawbridge inside the castle.

Regarding counter fire from the castle to the defenders. You forgot that in the Disney universe they have canons. So those outer and inner towers may support a full gun battery, that would make any attempt to bombard the inner buildings suicidal. Shad, you have to remember, much like real castles, the Disney Castle was modified after the medieval period. Those buildings in the bailey? Added in the 1870s to house the various minsters of government. The bridges to the postern gates---some how you missed that those are railroad viaducts added in the 1850s to connect the Castle to Main Street and Frontier Town. Sure, it's a medieval castle at heart, but much like, say Windsor--it's been overlaid with modern conveniences.

Mmmmm you have to balance practical use versus defence. Also those internal buildings were probably wood. During a long extended siege they would probably be dismantled and the timber put to use. Alternatively if an invading army had successfully taken the outer wall by surprise and was massing for an attack on the inner wall setting those inner buildings on fire would be really bad for an invading army crowed in the streets in the middle of an attack.

This makes sense, another situation where I could see such making more sense is if in later years you had less issues with people wanting to take and occupy your land so you don't really need to worry about sieges anymore but still need to deter raiding parties looking to steal goods and/or people. I could see such being useful in such as the 16th and 17th century if you happen to be near the coast and don't particularly want your people to be kidnapped by Barbary slavers for example. I suspect a fortress like this would likely just send raiders of that nature sailing to a softer target further up the coast.

Now I want a movie/Kingdom hearts level in which the Disney characters have to defend this castle from a siege. We could have: -Robin Hood and Meridia (with support from John Smith) firing down from the battlements -Tarzan running from rooftop to rooftop bringing supplies -the Gargoyles awakening to throw enemies off the wall at night -Basil of Baker Street performing espionage -Hercules on the bridge guarding a side enterance against attack -the Black Pearl in the bay or river, firing on enemies -Mulan organizing anti-trebuchet cannons in the courtyard or an the roofs of the inner buildings -Peter Pan harassing attackers from the air. -King Triton and the merfolk defending the river -Stitch and his cousins throwing people off the walls. And of their enemies attacking the castle: -Captain Hook could sail directly up to the walls and open fire or oppose the Black Pearl Maleficent in dragon form could fly over and would be more than a match for Peter Pan-enen the Gargoyles would have trouble dealing with her. Hades and Jafar have magic and could charm defenders-only Merlin and the Genie could really oppose them. Ursula also has magic and wouldn't be bothered by the moat. Anyone else have any ideas?

Also, Hiro flying on Baymax and using microbots and rocket fists against the attackers. The problem is that all those "defenders" are from different periods of time joined together, so we can't tell on what technological level the regular soldiers of the attacking army would be(because along with Disney villains, there should be a big army, as it's necessary to vastly outnumber the defenders to be able to take the castle) If it is a medieval army, then they would have a reeeealy hard time conquering it. But considering that we see a steam powered train in the background, that sets a possible time period from mid 19th century all the way to mid 20th century. If it's a 19th century army: The castle would fall, maybe not that quickly, but it would. 19th century artillery already had high explosive rounds, it would destroy the walls quickly and soldiers armed with rifles have advantages over swords and even magic users inside, as its quicker to pull the trigger than cast a spell. There would still be quite a few casualties on the attacking side. If it is a 20th century army, especially from WW2 era, the castle would fall within one hour. There is nothing even magic users could do against hundreads of bombers which would obliterate the castle. Black Pearl would be sunk by one bomb from a Stuka or Destroyer and Gargoyles would be shot down by P-51 Mustangs. Magic users could kill soldiers, but their magic lacks range and precision compared to rifles and their magic attacks wouln't be able to penetrate tank armor. Hercules may be strong, but he's not bulletproof, Triton couldn't survive the depth charges or Kraken(who would be on the attacking side) and archers would be dead pretty quickly. If there is the sea the Black Pearl could defend, that means the attackers could bring battleships and aircraft carriers(clearly an overkill by this point). Sure, Elsa could freeze the sea, but battleships can fire beyond horizon, so she couldn't see them coming before they get in range. So, all in all, the only army that the castle could defend from is anything before gunpowder era ancient and medieval army- easy gunpowder era army- hard, even with magic 19th century army- very hard post WW1 army- impossible

Now I want to see such a thing. Army attacking the Disney Castle, all Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, comes out to defend it. In fact, go ahead and reply how you think it would go down. Who'd do what. And we could have 2 versions, one where it's just all the heroes, and one with all the Disney villains too. And yes, I do agree with the idea it's built on wetlands, possibly inspired by Florida itself. In fact, you could even make a guess that that's where it is. So any attackers would have troubles getting there due to an extremely high water table. But at the same time, construction would also be a problem.

I disagree that the frontgate is oversized (5:53) As you mentioned later as well, it is on a river. So every boat would have to go through there(since it blocks the whole thing). You'd want it to be at least 25 or 30 meters so even big sail boats could go through there without completly shredding their mast i would think. Preferably taller of course. They might have to be pulled through, but that shouldn't be too bad. The bridges and drawbridges on both sides are obviously not big enough to let any big ships though, so they have to fit through that gate. In fact, it might not be a frontgate at all. Maybe the two bridge sides are the main entrances and the big entrance on the water is to collect tolls or something like that from ships.

Controlling access to the river may be thy primary purpose of the castle. If it is the castle may not have a moat to prevent circumventing the gates. The ground around the river also looks marshy, so it may not need a moat.

@Landogarner83
@Landogarner83 6 жыл бұрын
Don't forget that bigger sailships back then had stepped masts. Meaning that if the masts were too big they could just take the top parts down. So even for the bigger sailships you would never need a gate as large as you mention. 10 meters should be plenty for anything small enough to sail on that river. But yeah good point as to why that gate is so big.
@jort93z
@jort93z 6 жыл бұрын
Also, i just measured it, cause i was curious, and its just around 15 meters. So that would not be big enough to fit large ships. So i doubt it would be very good for controlling the river. People would need special boats just to pass through there. But at least it would allow smaller sail boats to pass. maybe fishing ships and stuff.

I think the lack of a moat going all the way around makes sense if the purpose of the castle is to control traffic along the waterway as well as the surrounding area. With a moat the entire way round you can slip past, but if the only way down the river is to go *through* the castle this becomes much more difficult.
@phoephoe795
@phoephoe795 6 жыл бұрын
Sailing around the moat would take time. Plenty of time for the castle to 'deal' with you via thrown rocks ect... Although some wooden spikes, or a few rocks/stone towers just below water level would make it fully impassable to boats.

A large boat, yes, but a small rowboat or canoe, or even someone swimming? You could slip past easily in bad weather.
@phoephoe795

Getting a small boat through would depend on the spacing of the posts. 2 or 3 rows of staggered posts would be impassable to everything except swimmers. And if people are willing to swim the moat, more power to them. Personally I'd just walk/wade/swim around the castle at a safer distance. In all honestly, if one wants to move illicit goods/people- pose as a legitimate trader and modify you vessel with some secret cargo holds for the good stuff. We can't cut out smuggling entirely; just make it as inconvenient and nonprofitable as possible.

Very cool model, Shad! I was wondering if the castle was build with very soft, boggy soil on both sides. That might explain the long bridges leading to the 2 side entrances and it would prevent an enemy from rolling a trebuchet close enough to the castle walls to damage the internal buildings that stand so tall. Probably no way to tell but it's fun to think about although it might make constructing the castle impossible.

The use of irrigation, or simple massed labor, would have made something like that possible in the classical period. But I don't know if anyone in the Medieval period could gather enough massed peasant labor to do so. But I do know that draining entire flood plains is quite possible. IIRC, the Chinese did, the Japanese used something similar when preparing their terraced farms, and I think a few ultra rural nations still do it today.

those buildings also men that the castle can have *a lot* of troops and resources inside, ready to be used if someone is foolish enough to attack the castle. Sure, a lot of food would be needed to arrive there fast, which might be why there are 2 lateral bridges, but once that's secured, they can deploy a massive number of troops for defensive and offensive purposes. Also, any chance you can come and talk on the discord server, from time to time, and tag @everyone? 15-30 minutes per week would be more than enough.

Fantasy castles usually only look really impressive but tend to have a lot of flaws as I've seen with the various vids here but ol' boy Disney the KING of fantasy castles when one thinks of them...seriously the only other castle people think of in fantasy as much as the Disney castle is Hogwarts now..is actually rather well designed all things considered. And given it's size it must take an army of servants to keep it running, along with the various guards and blacksmiths needed plus the families of all of them as well, so while the amount of inner buildings may be a bad thing defense wise they may be a necessary evil kinda thing...maybe a few less could be used but overall it's not too bad.

How about adding in wider custom roof top platforms on the small buildings? You can have the trebuchet on the roofs with elevation thus increasing range, as well as better line of sighting on the trajectory, thus making it easier for the trebuchet crew to readjust their aim.
@giin97
@giin97 6 жыл бұрын
Jesse Holt that's an interesting question... I will mention first off that I know very little about medieval construction. That said, trebuchets are heavy. Their ammo stockpile is heavy. They have a lot of forward and backward pressure when firing that would either need bracing or casters to allow it to rock (I don't actually know if real ones used those, seems unlikely, but I've seen that modern recreations can fire further if allowed to roll back and forth during firing). The point of all that... Could a medieval building support a trebuchet? It sounds like a fantastic idea, and I mean that in both meanings of the word. Are there historical examples of roof mounted trebuchets? It just seems like something that would potentially bring the building down from under it.

It'll need to be a fairly substantial tower to take the load of a trebuchet. Such towers would be very expensive to build. Luckily you already have perfectly suited towers built into the outer wall. (added bonus of being even higher- giving an even greater range over the enemy's machines)

Phoe Phoe then again, considdering the design of the free standing courtyard buildings, I bet those towers are packing 2-4lb breech loaded casemate guns.

Shad! Once again another outstanding video about castles! Always enjoy your talks about architecture and defensive structures. Perhaps you could do a series where you discus the many different types of Europe's Medieval and Renascence castle designs and their unique architecture features. I have always been curious about how similar and different British, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and other styles are from each other. Comparing and contrasting similarities and differences, and seeing how one culture's changes influenced others and vice versa. Embrace your Dreams and Protect your Honor! I Lord Zachael hail you Shadiversity as a Master class castle enthusiast! You sir are a King in my book.

"you sir are a king in my book" I agree. King Shad of house brooks, with the words "But what about DRAGONSS!!!" and the symbol of red sword and a battlement shield. Allies with the skallagrim clans and the old metatron empirem:)

I have a personal thank you, since I am framing and writing a story in which the survivors of a future calamity discover that one of last remaining functioning communities in the country is, in fact, the former Walt Disney World - since it was designed and constructed as much as possible as a self-contained city, the "crew members" and various tourists who survived banded together to make it one in fact, dismantling some of the rides for materials as needed and using much of the undeveloped territory to start farming. Once again, the vast citrus groves of central Florida return to help feed the population... I'll shout you out if it's ever completed, my man. Good stuff here.

Though, most of those castles are really mansions. That said, there's pretty awesome deals to be had, a habitable chateau can be bought for as little as $600,000!

To be fair, most of those buildings inside the castle look to be late 17th/early 18th century at the very oldest. So by which case that castle will likely be either no longer a defensive structure, or that more powerful yet compact cannons can be mounted instead, allowing room for more quarters. You could also say that about the taller structures on the inside. If the castle has no longer a major defensive purpose then converting old defensive structures to become more palatial is entirely plausible. Many castles in the UK became stately homes in their own right. Seeing as king Michael has now consolidated his empire, he is less bothered about defending his realm. He can buy them put or destroy them. So now he's being a flash bastard.

The castle in those eras was often turned into a palace or mansion. Sometimes when the original use of a building becomes obsolete, the building gets remodelled and converted to other uses.

one thing i like about the disney castle is the location. rivers are a valuable resource, for once the river provides water and pottentially food to the inhabitants, but more importantly, the domination of this river means that the castle is placed on an important transport route, meaning that, unlike the isolated mountain castle shad often praises, the disnay castle actually has strategic significance, an invading army couldn't just march past this castle, they'd have to take it, in order to use the river as a means for transport, and with how it is designed the castle could pottentially hold off even a fairly large army for several months, giving your allies plenty of time to prepare a counter attack.

I would asume that the size of many fantasy castles means that there should be quite some windowless rooms in the lower parts of the main buildings.
