Black Lagoon is a gritty anime from 2006, balancing some edgy elements with a normal perspective to create something quite unique. It follows Rock, who leaves behind the day in, day out nature of the Japanese business world for the Lagoon Trading Company: a small organization that sometimes does some illegal activity. There, he slowly becomes a villain- but one with a noble goal. Today, we'll look at just how that happened...

@@branimirstoilov8640 No. Maybe small OVA again. They made 5 episode OVA from 3 volumes + 3 chapters, but for now what they could work with is only 2 volumes for a specific story arc, and then a new arc has 5 chapters, and i don't know if it there will be more or only those 5 chapters for that story arch.

I think that Rock is a uncrowded boss, mainly because he isn't ready to fully commit to that role. If you watched the Black Lagoon OVA, where the company was hired by Lovelace to save Roberta, Rock took a deep dive into the murk to uncover an effective way to save everyone, from the soldiers to Roberta herself. What really had me on that is that Revy saw the route he was going to take and was ready to save him from himself in the only way she knew how, by killing him. Granted, Revy has threatened violence against Rock numerous times, going so far as to say that if he gets captured, she would leave him behind, only to, and I kid not, bursting waving her cutlasses to save him. But this time, she would've killed him if she saw him become like everyone else in Roannapur(spell check me please). In short, everyone who knows Rock, can immediately tell that he is the one good entity in their world of darkness, and subconsciously fear he could be like them, if not worse, if he falls into the darkness of their world.

Also, Rock’s eyes in the first episode. Whilst he was still a meek businessman. His eyes are drawn in the feminine anime way. Much more round. When his darker side peeks through, his eyes are drawn to be more masculine. With sharper edges. I mean, compare his first appearance to when he steps up to confront Revy in episode 7.

It’s like rock said, Revy will have to become her own Robin Hood. She desperately wants a peaceful life and probably wants rock to take her away from that life. I feel like if Rock does die tho Revy will become another Roberta and If Revy dies Rock will become another Chang. Black lagoon is so interesting and if rock somehow end up walking away from this life in one peace where the writing makes sense it’ll become my all time favorite anime/manga.
@bobymanna8468
@bobymanna8468 3 жыл бұрын
@@imactivated6841 I completely agree with your analysis. Revy wants a knight in shining armour to rescue her from a life of crime, but she also subconsciously thinks that she doesn't deserve one. That's why she tries to push Rock away, but also stands beside him when push comes to shove. Rock, however, is an enigma. We can see that he is becoming more and more manipulative and delving into his dark side. But, we don't know whether he truly likes Revy, or just manipulating her to do his biding. Tbh, I don't see how the relationship between Rock and Revy can survive, but if the author can do that, black Lagoon will become my favourite anime.

@morganmiller41
@morganmiller41 3 жыл бұрын
I think why people call him a villain is because he uses people for his goal. You know the phrase " if you want something done right do it yourself". Rock does not put himself on the line. He pushes other to do it for his own goals. Not only that, Rock only really values the lives of those he cares about. The random henchmen and boss that die don't matter to him. Saving people is like he said, a hobby. He wants to make change to better his own life and like the video addressed, to avoid living a static life.

Plus, one could say that he just did that on a whim, out of boredom. Idon't know, but n my life experience, I've seen terrible deeds yielding good outcomes, and good intentions resulting in true horror... becuse there's a gap between what people think they're doing and what is actually being done. these people are psychopaths and psychopaths of the worst quality.

I loved a line in the manga where people comment on Rock near the end that he is only one in Roanapur who does not carry a weapon and yet everyone from Balalaika and Mr. Chen all the way down to people like Senhua are weary, some to the point of being terrified of him because he can use his connections to get others to do what he wants when he gets serious and manipulate the whole unruly city.
@ProfessorViral
@ProfessorViral 3 жыл бұрын
Acting from the shadows he does have some power over them. Especially with the Lagoon Company somewhat "in his pocket," he has a decent level of protection, while manipulating things in ways no one will see until it's too late, or have no option to go against as with Grey Fox in Blood Trail. Despite missing some scenes or lines in the adaptation, I love how it seems to have nearly the exact same feel

@@ProfessorViral As much as Revy likes to say she doesn't care about Rock, it's very clear she'd go against ANYONE for his sake. She almost shot Balalaika when Balalaika shoved a gun in Rock's face when they went to Japan. In that sense, Revy IS Rock's gun. He doesn't really need a weapon of his own. And we didn't even consider any of Rock's other allies, who'd most likely do the same. And then there's also his incredibly manipulative nature. He really is dangerous if he tries.

Hell at the End of 2nd Barrage, Rock Challenges Balalaika when she tries to carry out the Hit orders that Washime had purchased on the rival Clan, She not only threatens Rock with a Gun and Throws him on top of the Hood of a Car, she's SO intrigued and amused that Rock is the only person around her questioning her authority, that she begins FLIRTING with him and then having a good Heartful Laugh. She CLEARLY has Respect for Rock, because she knows full well she coulda have Killed him, but doesn't. When the Russian Mafia Empress Not only allows you to question her Judgement without killing you, and also obviously has a Mild Crush on you and then suddenly turns around and gives orders that YOU favor, You KNOW you're a Badass with Balls of Titanium. Revy isn't just Jealous of Rock, She likes him. ALOT. He's her little Punching Bag, but she'll protect him at all Costs. Whereas Rock is Balalaika's Boytoy and Scullery Boy, Rock is Revy's Tipping Off point. Benny Likes Rock's Style. A Born Again Christian and Messianic Jew, Benny KNOWS well what's Righteous and what's not and he appreciates that Rock understands that. Dutch Knows. He's Wise enough to have understood how Invaluable Rokuro is. I always read Rocks character arc as a response to Plato's allegory of the cave. A man going through his entire life without choice. Suddenly given choice and it opens him up to a whole new world. But once the shock and awe of that new life wears off. He realises it's just a bigger cave. More complex. But Rock. Understands that. Because he's went through that transition. He's the only one who sees that all of them. Everyone in the city of the dead, are just acting out the same systems or "cave" that they either escaped from. Or were forced out of. That brought them there. Rock initially is the momentum of change within the story. But even though he falters and fails. Even if he stops working and moving forward to live outside the cave. That momentum doesn't stop with him. The impacts the city has had on him. And it's inhabitants have. That's not a one way system. The influence he wields and the discisions he's made. Have already started the momentum of other stagnant characters. Chiefly Revy, but also Balalaika, and all of lagoon company, by forcing them at one point or another to explain themselves. And thus acknowledge themselves and how they think and act. Funny thing is. The dead don't think, the dead don't act. The dead are stagnant, but no character who comes into contact with Rock. Remains stagnant.

Rock lives up to his name. He is the Rock between the calm and the squall, sanity and insanity, the light and the dark. The highwayman with a code and the bandit without. I never understood why I liked him so much as a character until now. Because he stands fully between all sides trying to balance them yet tried to change them for the better. I am surprised Rock didn't go full on insane in that year. I am also shocked that Roanapur didn't corrupt or barring that kill him. I can imagine Rock as an effective, efficient, ruthless, and charismatic criminal. He would be much more worse if he had military background, he would be able fully utilize his potential if he was in the US Army Special Forces and if possible Delta Force (There is a fanfic story about this). Rock organizing criminals by using his military experience would be terrifying. PS: I know I am ranting but I cannot help but imagine it.

In the manga balalaika said he might become a real monster. I can see it, we’re just waiting to see when rock will finally take up a gun, to see his change OR Will Revy leave for the life she wanted but feels is unattainable, the life she sees in Rock or will rock finally step into dark? One things for sure Revy became more possessive of rock, even saying he’s mine so if you touch him I’ll kill you.

@@ProfessorViral for me it's a borderline masterpiece. It doesn't shy away from the grit or the gore, the character development between rock and revy, rock slowly over multiple seasons decending into the depravity that is his new life yet still keeping one foot in his old morals not fully committed to his decision in ep 2. And revy seeing him as a ray of hope for a better life, as a way to escape from her existence. Robertas blood trail is the best season for this reason. The comedy is also top notch. Balalaika steals every scene shes in. Dutch is the dad we all want. And the dub. OMG. It's very rare that a dub can out do the sub of an anime. But this show if watched in any other form but the english dub is a crime against humanity. That's where revy really shines in her dialogue. Dammit guess I gotta go watch it again. F*ckin A.

Rock is a mighty example of someone successfully adapting to harsh environment without becoming completely consumed by it. There are certain principles he doesn’t let go of ( refusing to carry a gun, violence as a last resort) but he is no pushover or weakling. This is how you set a MC bar so freaking high. For a Seinen Manga, though. Although, Hiroe-sensei shot himself in the foot (according to some reviewers), when did Re:CREATORS. Everyone was expecting Souta Mizushino to be a Rock 2.0, when that wasn't the point. At all. The interaction between Souta and Meteora is kinda a Shonen-esque version of the Rock-Revy chemistry: Kid who thinks he's a piece of shit and a literal NPC from a beloved RPG who believes she got everthing under control. As the plot goes on, Souta can get his shit together and move on: grow as a person while Meteora starts to act more human: being brought down to earth and realize she can fuck up big time (which she did). *A Defrosting Ice Hitwoman Queen and a Good Salaryman who began to corrupt himself. And none of them knows how to stop each other from doing that. I LOVE THAT.*

An interesting article, I would've liked to see your take on Rock's development through Roberta's Blood Trail. Essentially he tries to be like Mister Chang and manipulate his preferred ending to Roberta's second rampage across Roanapur. His solution, while successful, costs him the respect of one the series few genuinely kind and decent people. Given the revulsion most anime fans have I'm reluctant to say this but I honestly think this series could be decently adapted to live action. Though if I did so I'd find a way to connect a lot of the bigger storylines together so it would be easier to see Rock's graduated descent into twilight

I honestly don't know what to call him right now in the story. Calling him an antihero or a villain feels too much for the only character that at least retains some sort of normal morality in the anime, but calling him a lawful good hero also seems pretty stupid (he's a pirate afterall and not the One Piece kind). I think that he is in a state of transition where he knows well how Roanpur is, but he can't really embrace it as a whole. He will probably never embrace it though, because it would change his whole dynamic with Revvy mainly; he is there to do the "good cop" to Revvy's "bad one", if he starts killing people and being power hungry, Revvy just become useless as a character. ( Or as I personally want the story to evolve: Revvy, as foreshadowed, wants to get out of this dangerous life and start living a normal life with him; while Rock gradually gets more and more villainous. Then the climax comes where he confronts Revvy and understands that Roanpur transformed him into a bad person.)

Rick’s character and design somewhat reminds me of Fargo characters like Jerry Lundegaard and Lester Nygaard. They are the least violent characters, compared to the other main and major characters. They’re businessman figures; Rock was a salaryman, Jerry is a car salesman and Lester is an insurance salesman. And they also fall into dark depths of character development when they got themselves involved in criminal activity. But, in comparison, at least Rock actually has enough balls to confront hardcore criminals and crime bosses, like Revy, Balalaika and Mr. Chang. As for Jerry and Lester, they’re selfish, pathetic cowards who would even go in lengths to put their own families in danger to protect their own skins. Lester eventually quickly succumbed to his dark side when he had enough of being a pushover for everyone, by killing his first wife and framing his own brother. He even sacrificed his second wife so he wouldn’t get assassinated in the place he sent her to. Jerry is a spineless loser who tried to steal money from his father-in law to cover his debts and even hiring crooks to kidnap his own wife. Unlike Lester and Rock, Jerry never succumbed to his dark side, but instead, his greediness.

First he tried to deny it, to do good despite the surroundings. The similarities come to an end when rock got his chance, he could've walked away but he chose not to. He decided he had gone to far to go back, however he still couldn't expunge all of his old self. He tried to be the best of both and in the end he realized that's all he can do, try.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and that it was able to give you a bit of Black Lagoon content, even if it's just from a fan! Also, thank you for watching and leaving a nice comment! : D

IMO I think rock is seeing grey he tried to bring light into the darkness and darkness into the light and he succeeded in one wail but failed or it backfired in another. After each results he starts seeing the grey area but he keeps things from his past so he doesn't get dragged into the darkness like he keeps wearing his white collar uniform, and being polite. It takes guts he comes from a society where everything is peaceful to being thrown into a place where violence is a way of life you either sink or swim but that is just my two cents

That is true, at the end of the day not many like him could survive in this new world like he does. He has that at least

Hell if rock went back home again and runs into his former boss, chances are he'll kill the guy for what he did. I don't know what rock will do if he bumps into his family.

I'm glad they didn't show his family, thinking on that point. I think it's one of those things that would define him too much, and it's better left to mystery

@@ProfessorViral fair point. But the thing about the former boss is definitely a possibility if rock sees him again

This was really, really well-done! I'm curious: have you ever heard of an anime called Area 88? I feel like you would do an excellent job with covering it

If you guys want to read something similar to Black Lagoon. Try the manga Black Joke. It's mixed with a little bit of the movie 'Casino'. The only draw back of reading it is. That it was canceled after a big cliffhanger.

@@DanteSuper95 Same. Speculations say it was cancelled. Others say hiatus. Other say that they released vol 10 in 2020 on July. But I don't see any translations. The the fandom wiki says 'Ongoing' yet there hasn't been any news since 2017.

@@DanteSuper95 *Update* (I looked it up just now) They released Volume 10 On July. 4 years after Volume 9! I'm gonna try finding an english version copy. *Update 2* They still haven't translated any chapters after about 3 months.
