Black Lagoon is a gritty anime from 2006, balancing some edgy elements with a normal perspective to create something quite unique. It follows Rock, who leaves behind the day in, day out nature of the Japanese business world for the Lagoon Trading Company: a small organization that sometimes does some illegal activity. There, he meets Revy, nicknamed "Two-Hands" for her dual wielding pistol style. A dark woman, who lives in, and love violence. But under the surface there's something more, especially once she meets Rock...

@@ProfessorViral It was also a great platform to introduce people who've never been outside the "Vacation Theme Parks" of the world and the "1st World Dream World" to what life is like for pretty much, most of Humanity. The kinds of things "western" culture or even the "sheltered" Japanese would find horrific are just "another normal day" in life for most of the human population of the world. While the action is over the top, much of what is presented as the "dark underbelly" of the world is more like "most of the body of the world". In that way, it is scary realistic. Especially the perspectives of the characters in the show as they go through "every day". How they can even find some enjoyment, moments of borderline happiness. They live for that moment because the rest of it is hard bitten, violent, and short. Which was the "norm" for humanity for the vast majority of recorded human history. Rock is vicariously the viewer who grew up in the "theme park" called Post War Japan thrown into the "real world".

@@meatybtz I think there is a slither of truth to what you are saying, but no where near to the extent you are trying to paint it is. For a few reasons. Firstly I myself am from one of these "1st world theme parks" and I have in my past dabbled with some.. let's just say less than moral people. I believe Black Lagoon itself actually touches on this issue too when they end up in Japan. Those types of characters in life are not confined to certain nations. The anime constantly touches on some of the more heinous crimes and behaviour that people are capable of, some of which happen in Japan. The concept I found Black lagoon putting forth is that society has these two sides to it and those two sides exist everywhere. You have people living in either the theme park as you say, or living in the darkness and even though Black Lagoon is undoubtedly one of my favourite series and I consider it one of the masterpieces of anime due to it's storytelling, world building and character arcs and interactions. I actually feel it falls short in this one area. In reality the line between the darkness and the theme park is much more blurred. With people constantly moving closer and further away from one side and most people living with one foot, or toe, or hand in both sides. With the exception of Rock, the anime tries to paint these two levels of society as quite distinct from each other. You either have to join the living dead or you have to go to work for a jerk of a boss in some company somewhere... But that is just not really how things play out in reality. Secondly, I have also done quite a lot of travelling, I have even been to the real area of the world that the fictional city of Black lagoon is based off. Roanapur is of course a fictional city. However if you want to check it out, it is located in the area of Trat or Chanthaburi in Thailand. I also found this region to be far more peaceful than other areas in Thailand such as Pattaya and Phuket which definately put out the aura of cities with seedy underbellies. Anyway, the reason I say a slither of truth is because the anime certainly gets some things right. The corruption of local authorities and rampant gang activity in that area of the world for example... However contrary to what you say, the vast majority of people even in those regions live their lives the same as the average westerner or Japanese person. It's just instead of cars they have motorbikes. and it is not about financial stability either, yes many people there earn less than Japanese or western citizens, however their earnings are in line with their cost of living, allowing them to live that comparable lifestyle and Thailanders in particular are far more financially stable than some of their neighbours like Cambodia, Myanmar or Laos. What I am trying to say is overall the lifestyle of most people is far more similar than you would think. Most people try to go through university, work to earn a living, do some hustling, go to bars or nightclubs, do their best to care for their families and loved ones, have family dinners on on national holidays, follow some sort of religion,.. and on and on. It was actually one of the most striking things I found when travelling. When I went abroad for the first time I expected people to be living a totally different lifestyle. But in reality there were far more similarities than differences. It's just people being people, no matter how far you go.

In my opinion, what makes Rock Revy such excellent foils to one another (and adds a huge layer to their relationship as characters) is how Rock's character arc is a very direct contrast to what Revy wants for herself. Revy thrives in the criminal world and it's shown multiple times. On paper, she has no reason to want to escape from it, and yet she still seems to desire exactly that. Rock, on the other, was absolutely not qualified for Revy's world on paper. He was an ordinary man with a good heart who stuck out like a sore thumb in his new environment. And he was pretty much forced into it after what happened to him with his company and such. But unlike Revy, who wanted to escape the world that she excelled at, Rock was able to adapt to the same world that he was seemingly completely not fit for and Roberta's Blood Trail really showcases this. Rock actually gets what he wants for once. Rather than failing, he actually succeeds in his plan. It almost feels like a twisted "reward" for accepting what's necessary to make it in this new world. He wasn't able to achieve much by being nice, but once he tapped into his darker side, he actually managed to make his plan work. Revy wants to become something else, and escape into a better world. Rock has adapted to the new world that he was forced into, accepting that the only way for him to succeed is to change in the same way that his world changed.
@ProfessorViral
@ProfessorViral 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, they're slowly swapping sides, and all Revy can do for the most part is watch, or deny it like she does for a bit. The small details early on vs later that show how much she cares makes it even more compelling too, I love seeing how she gets softer over time
@alzingafagan7501

True and as much as Revy will pour one out to the loss of that nice side of Rock, she is still devoted to seeing him stay in the Twilight as much as she can control. If anything, they'll stand together at the edge of their world to be together, Rock closer to the darkness and Revy closer to the twilight.
@heavydonkeykong5190
@heavydonkeykong5190 3 жыл бұрын
@@ProfessorViral They also clash for opposite reasons in the beginning and end. At first Revy is upset about Rock's refusal to adapt, but in Roberta's Blood Trail, she realizes that she actually did appreciate the more idealistic side of Rock, yet Rock was forced to surrender some of his innocence after realising that being a nice guy wasn't going to get him anywhere after the way the Twins Arc and Tokyo Arc ended. It ironically vindicates Revy's earlier views, right when she begins questioning them.
@heavydonkeykong5190
@heavydonkeykong5190 3 жыл бұрын
@@alzingafagan7501 I feel like the twilight is symbolic to Rock's ability to adapt. He's been a part of both worlds now, and realizes what's necessary to make it in each of them. Revy is part of the dark world, but unlike Rock, she never made the move to swap into the opposing world, yet she at least gets closer to the twilight as Rock challenges her views.

revy also cares about him which I don’t think she’s done for anyone before. she doesn’t want to see him descend into darkness not only for her own benefit (to be her saviour) but also because she doesn’t want him to get hurt or lose himself to the lifestyle she’s stuck in. it’s clear from how she protects him throughout the series to roberta’s blood trail where she asks how this ends and what she has to do for him. I just hope rock doesn’t lose himself completely because as of the end of the anime he’s manipulating and using revy as his gun.

That cigarette kiss is the deepest thing I've ever experienced from an anime. The positioning of the bodies communicates more than just that subtle romance... It's the representation of the submission of Revy to Rock's point of view. It's almost like she is welcoming him to the darkness of her world. A darkness that will take it's toll once Rock will have to face his transition in the Japan arc.

The one thing I find so tragic is indeed that Revy sees him as her chance to escape her personal purgatory and the fact that he doesn't realise she sees him that way. What I find really compelling about this is that this otherwise bad ass character, who fears no danger, is simply too afraid to tell him that. It is exactly because of that fear and not telling him that in the end her hope is never fulfilled.

I don't think it's quite as simple as 'because she wouldn't tell him what she hopes for, her hope isn't fulfilled'. The darker unspoken truth, I believe, and which is something Revy very likely understands, is that Rock enjoys their life in the darkness far too much to save her from it, even if he were to know it's what she wanted. Because saving her wouldn't be getting her out of that life, it'd be walking out with her. And he doesn't want to leave.

The person she is ? No but she knows that it's the only place where she can call home and the only person she can be I mean look at the other characters they are way darker then her she submits to reality but they are submerged in darkness that's the difference although it may seem small but it's really not she has shown empathy which many don't she thinks as " there's nothing I can there's nothing I can save " but others like balalaika, the twins and Roberta think as " we will get what we want no matter the method" revy is good person at heart she just numb herself to emotions she isn't evil just a broken kid you can see that in her interactions with rock and le majeaur

@@razkable They were similar but it wouldn’t bring her back to light plus Ginji loved Yukio. The thing is rock is between light and dark slowly shifting to dark. Revy is desperately holding on to what she wants rock to be because that’s what she needs to keep her sane and give her hope but it’s not gonna last for her. I think whats interesting is what rock told her at their very first argument about being a tragic heroine. Revy is constantly wallowing in her own despair/trauma hoping for a hero to come save her(rock in this case) but rock told her to become her own Hero. So now this brings up the question? Does revy really need rock? Yes until she’s wakes up to the truth she has become her own light. As far as future goes with rock I can’t see it happening but there is a glimmer of hope if revy can become her own light and spark a change in rock to come back to the light with her. I doubt this tho.

Dublis91 I think the main reason as to why that is is is here is your premise, “out of everything that happens in Black Lagoon”. I love this show but I think it’s reasonable to say that vampiric, incestuous tweenage twin assassins and a Terminator maid aren’t the most realistic depictions of violence - though props to the series for always grounding these characters’ origins in real-life conflicts so that they can at least seem relatable as extreme outcomes - and then there’s Revy’s past. Her home life isn’t as uncommon as we’d all hope it was (again, despite the extreme she escalated her solution to in order to escape it) and what happens to her in the station... is even more common. That flashback is one of those few instances of violence that isn’t just raw and personal, it’s also relatable; there’s no squadron of fellow former soldiers or bowling alley full of Yakuza, no CIA, hackers, “cleaners”, terrorists nor actual , literal nazis. There’s just a poor, young, girl from a minority ethnic group and men abusing their physical and social power over her for their own pleasure. It’s the realest thing in the whole show and pierces straight through the suspension of disbelief we normally apply to enjoy a show like this

Rock still views her as that woman who gave him that nihilistic speech on the submarine. And she still says all the same things to be fair-- but her words lack conviction and her eyes are constantly pleading the opposite. She doesn't yell at him or point her gun in his face anymore (unless he's doing something really really fucked up). I think with how the current manga arc is going, we'll be getting some character development and backstory for Dutch, which makes me think maybe the story is coming to an end soon. I think if they don't die at the end, they might betray Dutch, Balalaika, and/or Chang and after a huge fight, either die, or retire in hiding working a fruit stand in South America like Roberta did with FARC. They live hapily ever after (maybe at the Lovelace Manor) until their past catches up with them like it did with Roberta, only it won't end as well for Revy and Rock, kinda like the end of the first Mafia game.

I actually can see that,as well as the bloodbath that would ensue should their "happy dream" life is interrupted or destroyed. But I think we would need to look out for a calm Rock in that instance, because the moment he stops hesitating, Revy and everyone would know that he's going to take his shot with the only bullet he has. In fact, it's best to think of Rock as a Sniper rifle with only one round in the chamber because should he miss it's all over for everyone but if he hits his mark, it will be here where all the chaos of the world stop.

Avoiding spoilers, they talk about what these girls are doing, they seem to be looking for a specific big black guy ("hey, like you Dutch" - Benny) and interrogate everyone about a specific date and location. As soon as Dutch hears about that last bit, his tone shifts, he geys up and says he's gonna leave for a bit, don't look for me. Then he moves their entire weapons stockpile to a warehouse where he's probably pointing a gun at the only entrance waiting to shoot anyone who walks through that door like a Call of Duty camper. So at the end, they switched roles. Rock became her in her darkest moments, and Revy is becoming the best in the light, or what she can accurately perceived as the light. She wants to be saved, she wants to get out of this wasteland of a city, but who she thought came to save her, is turning into the people that wronged both him and her. In many ways, their conversation in blood trail’s is very similar to their first big fight in episode 7. She understood that what roanapur was doing to him, and for the first time, she’s not watching from the sidelines, she’s actually calling him out on his cold-blooded nature. So when she punches him, perfectly mimicking the first punch in episode 7, it’s for two completely different reasons. When Revy hit Rock in Episode 7, she did it out of anger because she didn’t want to hear the truth. But here, she’s doing to save him from going too far into the deep end. She’s finally stepping up for once and not just falling for his ideal image of him, and actually confronting him for who he as become.

All Revy really needs is a nice good hug, and someone who's honest with her and tells her to go ahead and let go of the hurt, the pain, the bitterness, that it's ok to let it all go and cry, to tell her she isn't a bad person and that she will be ok. She needs to know that it's ok not to be ok, and that no one is ever gonna hurt her like that again. It will take time for her to build up trust to open up, but in time a person like that will, but be ready to be that listening ear, a warm smile, and that warm bear hug. But a person like Revy has to deal with and confront the root of her problems, her inner demons, once she does that the healing of her psyche can begin. I had to do this for my wife, cause when we met her soul and psyche was damaged from an abuse relationship, the death of her beloved father, and looking for love in the wrong places and the wrong guys. I had to be her healing and now she's a better person, it's a day-to-day process. If Rock weren't so full of himself he could be Revy's healing. Sometimes all it takes is to show love, concern, sincerity and a hug to help a wounded heart to healing!

I think part of the reason why Revy doesn't just go for Rock (besides her quasi-canon backstory where she was raped - hasn't appeared in the manga, just the OVA) is that she's afraid she'll 'pollute' Rock, or that if she digs deeper she'll find out he IS a fake and a hypocrite after all. It's easier - and safer -to observe from a distance. That way if Rock ends up being exactly what she assumes all people are, she can console herself with the notion that after all, she never got THAT attached.

I definitely think Revy is in love with Rock ever since their standoff where he peels her open after the deal with the Ripoff Church. I don't think Rock feels the same, I think he understands she's not healthy enough to be in a relationship and he's just not her type, but that he cares about and loves her deeply as a friend. I also think that Revy isn't psychologically capable of going into a romantic or sexual relationship anyway, due to her last traumas, and is very comfortable just being a friend and a bodyguard to the man she loves, especially since those feelings aren't mutual.

A lot of folk think Rock and Revy are already in a sexual relationship because this is an adult anime. But I really don't because when you look in the manga, I think Revy sees sex as a dirty thing, as a way to dominate, humiliate, or use someone (this is a woman who was a rape victim who was very likely molded by those first experiences, and then is implied to have continued on with that in prison). I think she hasn't pursued Rock sexually because her feelings for him are too respectful and pure, as funny and twisted as that sounds. I think she legitimately would see it as violating and probably doesn't conceptualize the idea that sex can be a healthy and unselfish thing. As for Rock, that's complicated. We know more about how Revy thinks because she wears her emotions on her sleeves. Rock keeps most of what he thinks and feels caged up in his head. He also has a tendency to lie to himself quite a bit so what he says, thinks, and actually deep down feels inside are often at odds. I suspect he does have feelings for her. But I think a part of him is legitimately scared of trying to entertain that for a moment, because it would lead him to trying to save her. And I think he wants to save her, but I think he's also afraid of failure, of rejection, and of getting that close to someone who is very likely to die in that world. And so he works to save other people, strangers, because that gives him an ego boost, an adrenaline rush and is safer on his heart in case he fails. There's also the darker angle being that he actually likes the game. He likes his life of crime, the freedom, and the feelings of power he gets from it when he plays kingmaker; and if he were to try to be with her in earnest, he knows he'd have to give that up. He'd have to actually step up and do the real hero thing, not necessarily because she wants that, but because what man in love would ever risk leaving the person they care about in that kind of environment? So instead of dealing with all those complicated feelings, it's easier to keep distance, to pretend she doesn't matter so he can play hero to other people and selfishly feed his addiction to power, while keeping her close as his friend and gun. The tragedy of that is, I think it would all come shattering down if she were to ever actually take a bullet and die. I think that would be the moment the illusion fell apart completely, just as it did for Yukio. Cause the thing about keeping distance with someone you love to spare yourself pain: it doesn't actually work.

Revy character is interesting to me personal because she has so much grey areas in her character. She’s an anti hero character done right. She was abused by her father and was *taken advantage of* by the police when she was kid. As an adult, she has a explosive temper, is violent as fuck, and sadistic. Revy is still traumatized by her past but it’s clear to us as the audience that Revy isn’t going to turn a new leaf. Revy accepts her fate when she’s said “Fine I get it I know exactly what I am.” She accepts that this is her life and there no changing it. I like anti heroes like Revy where she doesn’t have a her own personal moral code that goes against the heroes moral code or she’s brutally shooting criminals in order to clean the world from their filth. No she doesn’t care about all that. Being a gun-women is exciting and thrilling for her. She enjoy the thrill of the hunt and the money that comes with it. Revy isn’t a hero. She just product of the dark side of humanity, another criminal.

Black Lagoon can be very relatable with lots of Western media. From Tarantino's stuff and Terminator, to Apocalypse Now and Michael Mann's films. Its great to see that a lot of people that I've shown the series to, even my gf, who never dared to sit and watch anything anime, got hooked on it. I've got too, and I'm not even a big anime fan. That said, I think we could make some links to western characters and the show's protagonists. Could we say that Rock resembles somewhat Michael Corleone? A good-doer that ends up involved in a dark path? Or perhaps Revy and the main character from Michael Mann's "Thief"? A professional safe-breaker (and quite capable with guns) who spent his youth days in prison, but isn't quite capable of building relationships as a normal person nor escaping his criminal life. About "Thief", I believe it was Michael Mann's first big score, and it sets the tone for the other things he did next, like Miami Vice, Heat and Manhunter (where we had the first ever cinematic debut of Hanibal Lecter). It has a lot of grit and shows a higly technical light on the craft of the safe-breaker (portrayed by James Cann). I highly suggest it if you're onto crime films. I'm gonna slightly disagree. I think rock is more just understanding who he has to be in order to save people. Yes Garcia stayed in the light but if not for rock Roberta would have died. It would have been a far more tragic ending. I think rock is just realizing that in order to pull someone out of the dark you need to go into it and no true white knight can. That's what I think he means when he says he can't fully go into the dark yet, saying he can't save her yet but he is learning.

His plan did allow more people to stay alive than what would have happened likely, but wasn't that just to achieve his end goal? He needed it to end that way in order to draw attention to the drug trade, specifically Roanapur, although that was thwarted by people above him. Plus, he was part of getting them into that situation. He definitely does still have the want to save others, and that was likely a consideration in his plan, but he was acting on what he wanted in the end. Not saying this to argue, just putting my perspective on him out there as well!

I'd love to see one of these videos on Balalika. I feel there are nuances of her character that get lost on some people. And also I need to settle an argument with a friend on if Balalika actually cared for her comrades or simply cared about them as a human commodity for her to use in battle. Also, I have a theory about another anime, Blood+, that I've always wanted someone with more resources and a better way with words to look into...that Nathan was in fact not Diva's chevalier but her and Saya's mother's. Not sure if that's your bag, but it's always intrigued me.
@ProfessorViral
@ProfessorViral 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm... Balalaika would be tough, simply due to her more limited screen time against the main cast. But, while I'm getting notes for my Rock follow up, I'll see if there's anything I can do! Mmm, from what I've heard the manga has stagnated. The author really hasn't done anything with their relationship. Thats probably why people prefer the anime at this point. It wraps things up in a rather bittersweet, open ended tone. You know they're going to continue their journey, but it looks a bit darker than when it started. Roanapur won. Rock became a murderer. And revy hated that she didn't stop it.

Dude, no offense, but I think you are totally missing the point of that scene in the sub, as well as their relationship. Remy was attracted to Rock from the beginning. She thought he was an actual honest good person. That is why she acted the way she did in the sub. Because she felt betrayed by the fact that she thought Rock was looking down on her. Throughout the series, they show an obvious sexual tension between each other. Rock doesn't think he has a chance with her, because he see's her as this battle goddess and she doesn't think she has a chance with him because of her own self loathing and jaded view. Basically she doesn't feel she is worth a relationship with Rock. As for the scene at the diner, if you look at her face, it was surprise when the gun went off. She was basically fucking with him. She had no intention of shooting him. Basically she wanted to see him grovel and apologize. The gun went off when he grabbed it, so she was surprised by that, and the balls it took Rock to do what he did. That is why they ended the episode with the "cigarette kiss" At no point did they "hate" each other. But as the show went on, obviously the sexual tension was getting to both of them. So they got snappy with each other. But both would do what was necessary if the other was in danger. This is a very common trope in these anime, and in television etc. The "will they or won't they". It drives tension, and viewer involvement. But usually they never do, because then people begin to lose interest. Overall though, I did enjoy your video.

while her accepting who she is is great, I always go back to what rock said back to their first major argument; "if there is no robinhood why don't you become robinhood?" obviously WAY easier said than done, but it would be cool to see revy go that direction. I think her realizing rock isn't going to save her isn't just her accepting who she is (even though it's heavily lenient in that direction, and i'm honestly wishfully thinking at this point) it could also be her realizing she has to do it herself. No one makes you robinhood, you have to do it yourself. Now I don't want to see full on good guy revy, that doesn't make sense, but idk just doing SOMETHING good for rock's sake at least. It'll be cool seeing the roles reverse, where rock goes more down the dark path, and while not fully being a good guy, revy will be the one to save ROCK at least. That'll be cool to see, and a cool way to end the story imo. or you know they just hook up and live happily ever after, that's just me though
