"It's you Rust, you are the true detective." - Marty

I'm usually about a decade behind watching whatever the 'popular' shows are at any given time, but when I finally got around to watching 'True Detective' last year, I was blown away. The literary references to Ambrose Bierce, Robert Chambers and HP Lovecraft were fun, but the primary interest was in the characters themselves. As I watched the characters of Rust and Marty evolve over the 17 yrs. of the story, the changes in these men was so well written and acted. Marty's realization of what he had taken for granted and lost, as well as Rust having become both more 'open', and yet also more despairing in a sense, were definitely high marks for Harrelson and McConaughey. Overall, this series was one of the best character-driven works I've seen done for television. Thanks for your look-back, and for your other posts, as well. :)

Hey try giving the other seasons of true dect a watch, though they dont live up to the first season they are all very good and unique despite the hate the next seasons got. Especially season 2 but i loved season 2 and its dark noir setting in seedy LA.

@shitchops watched season 2 again recently... I regret doing so. Please don't let me keep you from recommending things you love. I just wanted to say it has too many plot holes and dead ends. The acting from the main 4 actors is the only thing keeping me from calling the season trash.

"It also takes place in Carcosa, the name of what Errol calls the dump behind his house." that line killed me 😂

Rust is closer to a classic hero, a cerebal Achilles, a philosophical Perseus. He even goes on a quest, in a strange way, seeking an almost divine macguffin (a cosmic horror serial killer with dreams of ascension), and to acquire the macguffin he pays a very heavy price. He has a classic fatal flaw (his pessimistic outlook) and you could argue his hallucinations stand in for divine intervention, especially how they can be both help and hindrance. Rust's unexpected survival could also be considered divine intervention, since he describes dying detail yet comes back a renewed man. All evidence can be considered a 'gift from the gods' too.

@@burdenofbestit was the best season of his greatest performance so I’ll let it slide although Rust is a much better character than Walt

This is the best analysis of Rust I've ever seen this video deserves millions of views hes the most realistic character ever created

This is a good analysis. It’s good to see a review of something a long time down the road to see it from a more current perspective. Instead of having everyone jump on the bandwagon right away and make the same analysis video a week after it comes out. Then you can’t get through the flood of videos and the content seems dated. This works pretty well. Keep up the good work!

As a lead actor, rust deserved the emmy more than Heisenberg...its because of fan fav supporting BB. Rust is not just a character, he is truth which all media fails to portray or depict.

The first season is a case study in why the US Constitution creates ZERO incumbency upon police to take every suspect alive. To paraphrase Aaron Sorkin, "My existence, however grotesque and incomprehensible to you, SAVES LIVES. Deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, society NEEDS the make-our-own-rules cops more than it cares to admit".

I don’t think there’s anything anti about Rust or Marty they’re both hero’s and Pizzolatto agrees

Check it out, 5k huh...looks like you're closing in on twice that. Good luck, but Kipling's IF y'know. Youbie Tubie is going at it pretty hard with commercials every couple minutes so it ain't your fault they're pulling the rug out from underneath.
