Shi no Numa is the most overlooked Treyarch's Call of Duty Zombies map; Der Riese gets a lot of the credit for being a revolution for Zombies, but Shi no Numa was really the template for open maps that empower the player via choices.
"A Zombies Retrospective" is a series in which I play through each Call of Duty Treyarch Zombies map chronologically, and analyze its place in the series.

I’m surprised you found Zetsubo to more affective at horror, I found it to be less immersive and scary than Shi No Numa. The colorful/weird way the black ops 3 engine handles materials makes it feel less natural as an environment than Shi no numa to me. Even the Bo3 version of Shi No Numa doesn’t look right to me, too “plasticy” and “rubbery”

You’re not wrong at all, if I think about it I don’t think I was ever “horrified” with either of the two. Trying to express it again, I think my thoughts are that WaW Shi no Numa felt very stiff to me, and the jungle was always far away separated from the playable area by a fence so I never felt opressed by it. Zetsubou definitely has the oversaturated colours and isn’t believable either, but it was better about giving that feeling of the jungle encroaching into the map. Also, I don’t think it was trying to be truly scary, it was going more for pulp exaggerated horror, so I was able to believe it more at what it was trying to do

I mean I guess, but zetsubou was the first map in bo3, maybe apart from shadows, that actually was difficult to some degree, especially in a public match. While it was easy to perform well on Der eisendrache, gorod krovi, and revelations, zetsubou was difficult to setup on, the bunker was claustrophobic and had a pretty terrifying atmosphere, if you didn’t pay attention, it was pretty easy to get trapped. The spider rounds also complemented the map well and the mutated zombies were also a challenge if they caught you off guard. In general zetsubou is a different kind of horror, will shi no numa has an eerie setting, it’s a really easy map and I don’t really feel on my toes playing it in any of its versions; zetsubou however, is more of a horror experience, the backstory and the gameplay features I mentioned earlier contribute to a map that I’m always on my toes when playing - I’m not just training around and running zombies through the flogger.

I wouldn't say rubbery, I would say that it looked more fake than world at war. If you look at direct ports of weapons from world at war over to BO3 they look pretty good. I think it goes down to the materials they use.

Shi No Numa was the first DLC map I played in WAW. It was mindblowing going from Nacht to that. I still vividly remember the day to, my grandma and I went to go get our photos taken at the mall, and she let me get a 1600 Microsoft points card. The rest is history.

I'm really glad to hear that a zombies KZfaqr acknowledges how Shi no Numa was revolutionary in the fact that it gave the player power and freedom for the first time. I feel like this map's aspect is so easily glossed over because most players started in BO1, where they already got to experience that feeling of freedom and the feeling of bringing the fight to the zombies. But for players that started in WaW, this was the transition from defending yourself from the zombies to actively attacking the zombies.

Thats crazy, as a kid shino no numa was always the map that "scared" me the most, at least it was the one that made me feel the most uneasy while playing (obviously apart from when the baby is crying on Verruckt)

Man I remember when this came out. We were so used to being entrapped that the free space was a blessing. But sooner or later it ended it with 4 people huddled in a hut, turning on traps and holding down. Then rape training was figured out and the experience change. But man Shi no Numa was creepy and enthralling.

I always thought der riese was the turning point of waw zombies, but after watching this video essay i completely agree that shi no numa was the actual turning point, in terms of both playstyle/development direction, and the beginning of the zombies lore. thank you for this in depth analysis, i thoroughly enjoyed it

I wish he spent more time on the Easter Eggs. They weren’t the major point of zombies mode, but they were interesting, they were designed so perfect and delicately, they added to the mystery and slowly began to form a narrative in the zombies series.

@@Shlankyman545 and later on Treyarch seemingly picked that up and made a plot around the zombies, starting from black ops 1/2 and forward, this thing was something much more serious than a blatant "shoot em up and survive as many waves as possible" mode

Shi No Numa was scary, hell - to be honest all maps in original zombies were scary. It's really hard to compare them using the same factors but each and every map was really scary on it's own. Shi No Numa creeped the hell out of me and many other playerse mostly because of the location and the fact that buildings are primitive, these are huts, that give you an instant feel of being a complete stranger not only in a different country but completely different part of the world, different culture, different architecture, etc. All of this despite it taking place in the early morning, with a fog that makes the feeling even more intense but still. People tend to be less scared at day rather than night. Just like with walking in the forest - you can walk all day no problem when you see everything clearly, but would you have courage to go to the forest at night? Alone?

First, this is my favorite map (The original WaW map) hands down. That said, I'm surprised you didn't mention that with Juggernog 1 Zombie could NOT Knock you down. Also, you didn't mention that this was the first and simplest map to gain extra weapons on. Plus all the other goofiness mixed in, like being able to get up on the Fishing Hut roof, etc.

I’d love to see my total combined hours of play throughout the zombies series. It really changed call of duty forever and brought a lot of people together. Each new map felt like a new novel in an intense mystery/horror/dramatic thriller book series. What’ll come next, what guns will there be, what easter eggs will be around the map, WHAT IS THE NEW AMAZING SONG WE’LL HEAR AFTER FINDING AND HOLDING square/X ON THREE OBJECTS THAT GET NO HUD PRESS INDICATOR? God, I miss when these were new and it was a talking point at school with everybody. Crazy times, best mini-game mode ever.

You say Shi No Numa is 'less scary' and then immediately afterwards mention the Dogs 😂 I remember the first time I played this map with my friend, and it hit round 5, and *we shat bricks!* That loud descending sound, the fog eerily appearing, as a demonic voice screams *"FETCH ME THEIR SOULS!"* A Command from the undead, wanting you dead! That's fucking horrifying! Then burning Dogs of Death coming running at you! How tf you gunna say that's 'less scary' than Verruckt?

I still think Der Riese was the map that revolutionized zombies. Shi no numa added a few features that didn’t really stick. Most notably the lack of a power switch and the randomly spawned perks. Der Riese was the template that zombies would follow for years to come.
