Adult Swim's new cartoon is going to change the television landscape as we know it. And for the better! Smiling Friends by Zach Hadel (PsychicPebbles) and Michael Cusack is unhinged, inventive, and may even be the key to seeing more internet creators being awarded shows.

Hey I love your channel, you seem very well spoken and for being small, the audio and editing quality is fantastic. My only complaint is that you seem too quirky and animated. That type of humor is okay, but you seem to do it too much. Your audience isn't gonna be younger, so that humor is gonna miss most the time with your viewership. Besides my one complaint, great job! Very good video mate.

The fact that this entire season has the budget of a single family guy episode, yet it was infinitely funnier and had WAAAY more heart, is absolutely incredible to me! It really shows you what’s possible when creators are actually passionate, and not just cash grabbing! If Zach and Michael are willing to make another season, Adult Swim would be insane not to green light it! If AS takes this show as seriously as it should, I could see this being their next Rick and Morty, as that show has lost a lot of its creative steam!

I think the main reason why Alan doesn't get a lot to do in Season 1, is because he already had his B-plot episode in the pilot. In season 1 all of the secondary characters basically each get 1 b-plot. Glep with Mr Frog, and the Boss in the Frowning Friends. Coupled with both Charlie and Pim getting their own showcase episode each, doesn't leave a lot of room to involve Alan again in a big way. The season winds up incredibly well balanced with 3 episodes being b-plot heavy, 3 episodes of just Pim and Charlie, and 2 episodes focusing on either Charlie or Pim respectively.

Why does no one understand that animation studios aren’t responsible for the content of the shows they’re hired to make? Bento Box don’t write or design the characters for their crappiest shows, they just animated them for the people who did. Acting like the studio is bad because they’ve animated for shows that have turned out to be bad is really annoying. Clearly their animators are great and their studio knows what it’s doing on a technical level. They nailed so many different styles of animation for Smiling Friends.

Pretty sure Princess Bento are the ones who worked on this, not bento box. They're basically like the Australian version of them. With a complete different crew then Bento Box. I personally disagree with the B-plots thing, I loved the 2 plots in mr frog and desmonds episode. Of course not all episodes should do what they did because the show would be very predictable otherwise, but a few more B-plots other than the ones in the first 2 episodes (and also the grim and gnarly episode) would've been nice. Especially since glep and alan barely get any screen time outside of the B-plots they have in the 2 episodes, which feels a little weird to even have them at that point since outside of those 2 episodes Im pretty certain they have less than 20 lines.

Nice work on this review! I think the only thing to point out here is Harry Partridge was the lead animator for Myp and his parody was over the old Hobbit film, not Dahn Bluth. I also think the old man was Chris O'Niel, though it's hard to tell! I would have used the buff dude from the Frowning Friends episode because that IS Lyle Rath.

Great vid! But to my knowledge I don’t think Zach had anything to do at all with Yolo: Crystal Fantasy. Maybe he played a screaming goblin on it or something lol

The character in the fantasy episode is modeled after the original character designs in the old school animation of "The Hobbit".

4:59 You should do research beforehand. This is not an Elf. He is a re-creation of Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit/Halfling from the '70s The Hobbit cartoon. This cartoon was created by Rankin/Bass Productions. They also created animated adaptations for Return of the King & The Last Unicorn.

Now that you mention the internet celebs, I think that was Mike from Redletter media in the chekov's gun episode, famous for doing the long form review of the phantom menace, as 'Mr. Plinkett'

That's a bit much. Smiling friends is honestly like 50 other cartoons; Regular show, Aqua teen hunger force, gumball, ECT. It's two dudes, one upbeat and one more down to earth, in a world full of whacky characters, who go on missions and get caught up in crazy adventures. It'd been fine a million times. It's good, I like it, but it's hardly innovative.
