By the start of the 19th century, the British East India Company had become the dominant power across the subcontinent. Britain came to realise the vast productive potential of India and sought to protect this asset by any means necessary. At the same time, Russia’s imperial expansion started to gain real momentum by the 1820s. Russia’s rise worried the British. This Great Game rivalry placed the mountainous Kingdom of Afghanistan in the middle. The ever ambitious Afghan ruler, Dost Mohammad Khan made every effort to take advantage of this predicament he found himself in. But in the end, his intrigues and plans were not well-received by the British whose paranoid belligerence lead them to invade Afghanistan in 1839.

@@imrankh68 I would not be so sure. Between the U.S. failures in Iraq and Afghanistan. And Russia's current debacle in Ukraine. The next generation of diplomats and strategists will have much to learn from. Hopefully, they won't be bogged down by old thinking like the neocons that started the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It is easier to enter Afghanistan and conquer it but then you'll trap into it and the resistance will build gradually to haunt you. Afghanistan is literally the graveyard of empires.

It wasn't just the British troops that where killed while retreating but women and children, along with dozens of refugees, those that didn't die where enslaved.

Until Afghanistan becomes a nation, instead of a bunch of tribes fighting each other over territorial disputes, it will remain outside the community of nations. Unfortunately, the British then, and the Americans of recent history, did not recognize this simple truth. The people who are really hurt by this fact, are the average Afgan. They don't understand the concept of nationhood, and suffer accordingly. What a shame.

This is something of a myth that keeps cropping up and serves as a reminder to never ever trust Muslims. The British East India Company, invaded Afghanistan in 1838 to stop Russia expanding into the area. Some 21,000 troops, mostly Indian took part in the invasion, the Afghans were defeated and treaties sighned and most of the EIC army returned to India. In 1842 the remainder, about 4,000 soldiers and 12,000 civilians were granted safe passage to leave Afghanistan. These were then treacherously attacked and butchered.

The real hero of this war was mainly tajiks not pushtun, in this war 50000 Britain and Indian forces which were Punjabi under command Heri Singh, but the was busy fighting with Heri Singh in peshawor,but the tajik fought with Britain troops inside Afghanistan, they drove the British troops from Kabul toward Jalalabd,and pushtun saluted them,therefore, one medical doctor sevived,both Britain and Indian troops shame fully faced defeated and went back to India, please read Madam sale,historical notes, because she was general sale wife and she saw and wrote the history.
