I have to assume that once the computer was locked out the queen knew that if she pushed the attack too quickly that Picard would trigger the self destruct immediately and kill them all. Thus letting Picard believe that there was a chance at victory would keep her playing her game until she could regain advantage.

I still like the Borg Conspiracy Theory, they set things up to 'fail' in just the right way to succeed in the end....

With a lot of the Enterprise-E's crew dead when they return to their own time, it has a silver lining for Starfleet.… All the personnel that were originally assigned to the ship when it was under construction _and got bumped for the crew of the Enterprise-D after it got destroyed but it's crew survived,_ can finally get their original placements on the new Sovereign class ship they were promised.

One thing to note about the Borg in this scenario. They were at ridiculously low numbers compared to what the collective is used to working with. They had at most dozens of Borg minds to process data with when the collective is used to having literally millions of times that degree of processing power. (and note: they were out of range of the 21st century collective, thus the need to attempt to use the modified deflector dish to contact them). This would be akin to going from a modern supercomputer's degree of processing power all the way down to an Intel 8088 chip. So it's not really all that surprising that they weren't operating at anything resembling "peak efficiency".

Data not allowing anyone but himself access made sense. He's least likely to die or be compromised. Any crew knowing how to access the computer core would only need to be assimilated and then the Borg have access.

One thing that always annoyed me, The Borg adapts to energy weapons really fast, yet they never seem to have much protection against physical force, yet instead of taking advantage of that they keep trying to beat the Borg at their own game. Makes me think of SG1, how the Asgard were unable to fight the Replicators because they were incapable of adjusting their approach to the problem. The setup is so similar in fact that one could almost suspect a bit of plagiarism there :)

Why don't Starfleet have a SOP for dealing with a Borg incursion on a ship? "Computer; replicate mid 21st century military handheld projectile weapons and ammunition". Plus open all airlocks and vent into space those sections, it worked for both Voyager and the Romulan Borg Cube. You might not get all, but you really reduce the numbers. And WhyTF do the Borg need to adjust the environmental settings in the ship? It's a giveaway that they are onboard.

So, one thing about computer security: if there is a way in for authorized people, there is a way in for unauthorized people. This is why Data had to fully lock out the ship. Also, it made for a better movie if the whole ship is locked down and can't be unlocked while the Borg are still present, it nullifies their technological advantage and gives the crew an attainable goal that doesn't have to be handwaved away.

Hue when his "Individuality virus" attacked the Borg. The Queen roll changed from weeding out conflating data, to the roll of a despot. To keep the collective back onto order. That is why the Borg became less of a threat after Hue.

Just wondering if there's going to be any mention of the fact that Worf could not even move a Borg drone in TNG and then got flung across engineering, but in the movie, he's suddenly able to kill the Borg with a single whack from his rifle.

If Data was fast enough to whip up that encryption code, he was fast enough to flood the effected decks with ~insert techno-babble~ to instantly kill them all.

If Data had made it possible for Enterprise crew members to access systems, any crew assimilated after the encryption would know how to bypass the encryption.

You got me thinking about the reason they didn't fire on the deflector dish... So if a direct hit with mere phaser rifles on the dish could destroy half the ship... wouldn't that make deflector dishes in general (assuming this isn't just a design flaw of the Soverign class) a primary target in ship battles when you remove the obstacle of the shields?

Could you imagine being in main engerining as the Borg start to come though every door and entrance. Some would be frozen in fear, others would try to make a run for it, maybe towards the nearby jeffies tube and as they open it they see Borg laser beams in the tubes. A few successfully manage to get to a weapons locker and grab a few phasers and even take down a couple of drones but they are out matched two two one. As some of the last of the engerineeing crew are taken down the borg start to assminalate the deck, the crew and work outwards into the Ship.

Napoleon said to March separately but to fight concentrated. Marching separately ensured that at least one group got to the battle, but They needed to bring all their available weapons to bear to have a chance in engineering. It is an old military maxim, and it works.

Or the coolant is corrosive to most things and they have to use the glass. Perhaps the glass is usually reinforced by a force field and Data deactivated them when he gave the Borg "control". Which is why he complied - as a cover for deactivating the field. There are plausible reasons.

I think the Borg were just taking their time to consolidate their forces, advance and take an objective, then consolidate again, and it makes sense, to me at least. The first thing they take over is an area adjacent to engineering, and from there engineering itself, which is an obvious objective, given Engineering makes the second best command post on the ship, second only to the bridge, though for a boarding enemy like the Borg Engineering is probably even more preferable. After all, they are sitting right on top of most primary systems that way. That take-over probably already leaves them with several dozen people to be fully assimilated, but that needs certain infrastructure, which needs time, and even then full assimilation definitely takes a while as well, given that it essentially involves a dozen surgeries per drone. With limited manpower this likely takes time, so they just lock out any access point, make themselves at home and attempt to take over the main computer. Once that fails they set a new objective: The main deflector. Now with probably 50-80 drones at their disposal and a reasonable infrastructure for further assimilation they can advance more readily and take over half the ship, including likely half the crew. With the crew compliment being 700 and some on Earth its probably a solid estimate to say they have 300-350 drones by now, depending on how many boarded initially, with about 250-300 having to go through full assimilation. Even with facilities now in place that takes a while, so the Borg split their efforts between that and setting up the dish, given the latter doesnt really require much manpower anyway. Then that fails, too, and the Borg just collectively say "Fuck it!" and try to assimilate the whole ship. I know I left out the attack on Engineering where Data got captured, but I just dont think it has much influence on the Borgs logistics and their actions. It was certainly an opportunity for the Borg to capture him so he could release the lockout, so if that hadnt happened they probably would have made capturing Data yet another objective on their list and gone for it. In a way Data getting captured probably saved the ship. I think on the whole the timeframes are fairly reasonable. Even the Borg are limited by their logistical capabilities, and when they have an objective, they go at it with all the manpower they can get their hands on, even if that means waiting for extra drones to get polished up, just because an overwhelming victory causes fewer losses and thus is more efficient. Between "Good enough now" and "Perfect later" the Borg will always choose the latter.

The fact that the Borg had full access to the enterprise and didn't adapt to their surroundings is strange. They knew they would face federation phasers in their environment, they had access to the data several minutes before the lock out and never adapted to star fleet weapons prior to the first assault

In hindsight, apparently the crew forgot that the Captain's Yacht was still in their reach for awhile and they could have used that. Or really launch all shuttles to prevent them from falling into Borg hands or the Borg were too stupid to capture all the shuttles and launch at least ONE of them in the direction of the Delta Quadrant

I remember when ST VIII First Contact came out on vhs/dvd. My NJROTC instructor had our class watch it, and write reports on how Picard and crew screwed up over and over again. We know this takes place after the federation encounters the dominion, the defiant being present in the movie is all the proof you need for that. Yet, the Federation flagship seems I’ll prepared for battle, against the dominion or the Borg. Starfleet (based on dialogue) changed up tactics for ship battle. So they improved a little, but not a lot. As far as why the Borg didn’t swarm the bridge or act aggressively, someone else already pointed out that Picard’s fingers were on the self destruct. It feels like the Borg were playing a game of chess and The Enterprise crew was playing a game of checkers…

The Borg Queen; they should have just made a new Lucutas of Borg. The perfect candidate would be Dr Pulaski, who just happened to be visiting the Enterprise-E and got caught up in the battle. It would add a lot of emotional depth to the new "Leader" without changing the nature of the Borg at all - their SOP is to choose a emissary to oversee assimilation of a species, and if that doesn't work next time they choose a new emissary who directs a different approach. Picard chose to defeat militarily and then head to Earth, Pulaski was obsessed with "was Data sentient" and that is the reasoning for the new approach. And Data and Pulaskis of Borg would have more emotionally charged interactions than that pathetic femme fatale bit. _And when Pulaski dies it hits everyone hard (including the audience) without affecting the casting for following films.

For the life of me I could never understand why nobody realized the Borg are susceptible to projectile weapons? Replicate a couple dozen shotguns and a few M249s to guard vital assets and wipe the Borg out. Though to be fair, I may have blown the ship up sooner.

It's my understanding that it took the Enterprise at least a day, probably more, to get to Earth from the neutral zone. The fleet had been engaging the Borg for hours at the time. They'd started the battle light years from Earth, in a similar manner to how they did at Wolf 359 and then regrouped with the rest of the fleet at Earth to continue the fight.

RE: using direct assault teams instead of the ship's systems to evict the Borg from engineering... Perhaps they didn't want to cross the Rubicon of giving the Borg ideas. If you wanted to ruin a Starfleet crew's day and had access to the main computer, there are any number of things you could do. Forget something as major as turning off life support: just cranking down the inertial dampers and giving a one-second burst of impulse thrust would smear the crew against the rear bulkheads; turning off safety measures on a replicator could let it start spewing out nitroglycerin, nerve gas, or any number of other nasty substances; bumping the decimal back by one place on the thermostat would incinerate any organic compounds in the room; access to the gravity system for a compartment could let you throw the occupants around like shaking a box of action figures - assuming you didn't simply turn the gravity up by 10X to make them black out in seconds... Sure, there are (presumably) safety cross-checks that prevent the systems from doing this sort of thing, but those lockouts are all in the same main computer we're already assuming got hacked. Showing the Borg how the ship's secondary systems could be used to deal with hostiles would solve the immediate problem, but any other Starfleet ship the Borg boarded after that would be royally screwed.

I never noticed until your video here that the upper displays on the Sovereign bridge jut out from the mid and lower displays; rendering a standing viewer unable to see the top portion of the middle displays. How useful!

The Borg didn't want to win the battle because their Yandere Queen was showing off to Data to get back at Piccard.

To be fair, Starfleet _should_ have had protocols in place against the Borg, and especially against them doing things like beaming aboard and abducting captains. Which is something they had already done. Scanning the whole ship while dealing with the Borg to make sure none beamed aboard should be standard procedure. _Especially_ aboard a ship designed to deal with them. I'm guessing none of this happens so the plot _can_ happen.

In the "Battle for Engineering", you question why transporters couldn't simply be used to beam something into engineering. Remember...Data locked out the main computer, which, is responsible for transporter functionality on the ship (also why the away team detail couldn't contact or beam back to Enterprise). Additionally, the positioning of the plasma coolant tanks makes perfect sense in both peaceful and war vessels. Look at any naval vessel today and you'll see fuel and coolant storage rather close to the main and auxiliary engines. This also explains why the crew need to crawl through Jeffries tubes, versus beaming in and out of engagement points. Interesting though that the Holosuite and EMH are not dependent on main computer control...perhaps they have their own sub-processors, or function regardless of computer lock? An aside: On board our nuclear submarines and we have sailors bunking next to literal NUCLEAR warheads! (trident subs) as an example of how ship designers need to juggle between equipment and personnel. Lastly, Enterprise's warp core itself needs to be cooled, how else would one propose cooling without a built-in coolant tank (although I think the writers messed up here and should have called it the plasma coolant conduit, as the coolant merely routes through, and is not stored where Data made his hit.)?

Maybe medical staff didn't contact security because, oh I don't know, the communications were cut as we do see Beverly tap har combadge to no avail.

Probably my fave Trek film. Crap, I think it might be in my top five sci-fi movies but I loved TNG so my opinion might be questionable. Great video! The Enterprise is a lot like a Bantha!!!! YES!

I'm glad you caught the subtle foreshadowing offered when Starfleet sidelines Picard, who then goes on to prove them correct later in the film. However, an even bigger chicken-or-egg conundrum is this: Did the Borg of that era actually receive the signal from Earth, and is that why, centuries later, the Borg just happen to be scooping entire outposts off of planets along the Romulan neutral zone?

You bring up a lot of points I've thought about over the years. Firstly, the Borg, a species that can literally mold biological and technological entities into their own preferences at a microscopic level are stopped in their tracks, because Data changed the log in password to the computer. This group of Borg also appear to have a lack of understanding of how doors work. Then the Queen is killed, and all of the active Borg just die, for reasons. Flash forward about 90 years, and some of the survivors from the wrecked sphere are reactivated. Apparently they forgot that they needed the queen to live. They go on to engage another ship by the name of Enterprise. Now while this group of Borg remembers that they can assimilate computer technology at a microscopic level, they seemed to have forgotten how to adapt to "low yield particle weapons" as the Klingons would describe Starfleet phase weaponry at the time. Granted, Malcolm adjusted the phase pistols to emit a higher frequency range to increase firepower. However, there is no reason to make any assumption that these modified 22nd Century weapons would be more powerful or more versatile than 24th Century Phasers, which themselves have been proven to be mostly useless against the Borg. And after all of the 24th Century ships, computers, databases, and collective knowledge of assimilated Federation personal that the Borg have in their collective memory, their advanced technology was useless against a single Pre-Federation Starfleet vessel. Keep in mind that the same Starfleet ship had difficulties warding off Klingon vessels of the same era. All of these inconsistencies have led me to only one conclusion. The sphere that launched from the cube at sector 001 was the Borg equivalent of a short bus.

If OSHA exists in the 24th century then why are starfleet ships built with exploding rocks inside the consoles?

They took over environmental controls, and shortly after, sick bay. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that they could've flooded the ship with some sort of atomized sedative and just assimilated the knocked-out crew. Or, since it's demonstrated they can operate in a vacuum...ditch the air.

Considering the threat of the borg Starfleet should have had much better tactics for fighting off incursions on their ships. As soon as ANY borg activity is detected anywhere they should have contingencies in place. Starfleet having better tactics would make the movie overall better, as it would force the writers to make the adversary stronger/smarter etc, and thus more satisfying to see them beaten. Tactics against the borg, at least in my opinion should be several small teams using hit and run tactics. Using weaponry that actually, you know, WORKS. With the advanced materials they have available the Federation could make an amazing support machine gun or designated marksman rifle. But you know, pacifism I guess. Cause lasers are so much better than bullets, amirite?

I like the fact that in _STO_ , the Borg have become more aggressive, switching to 'kill' strategies fairly quickly against enemies they can't assimilate, and learning to assimilate species like the Undine (Species 8472) later on. They had also developed technology that allowed them to quickly assimilate entire planets (the actual planet together with its humanoid population), and they fielded a variety of ships in larger battle fleets instead of single cubes. Sometimes you faced the legion of the Collective (which I still think is more threatening) and sometimes the force you faced was led by the Queen. And not only could you lose control over your character on the ground if assimilated (until downed), but also over parts of your ship. To counter the Borg adaptability, you had a Refrequencer device that would take a few seconds to work. There are also some weapons that can switch between energy types, as well as traditional projectile weapons like Picard's Tommy gun (complete with 'spray and yell' as its alt fire mode) and Cochrane's shotgun. _STO_ also allows captains to equip two weapons of any desired type, and tab-switch between them on the fly, giving captains the classic RPG tactic of being able to use a projectile weapon and a melee weapon with fair ease. These range from traditional lirpas and bat'leths or mak'leths to knives and a set of Furiodon Fangs. I believe that, especially against foes like the Borg, Starfleet officers should have certainly be carrying bladed weapons for close-range combat. And because close quarters sometimes means 'really close,' it would have been smarter to go with a short sword than a polearm like a lirpa. When faced with a horde of Borg in ground missions, a favoured tactic of mine is to lay down as many turret type assets for support as possible, then start picking the threats off as they close. At close range I would switch to melee, and run through with my away team until I got to another open spot to repeat. All Borg move slowly, so they can easily be outrun.

Gods that moment of the enterprise sweeping in to take those hits for the defiant still gives me goosebumps

I think your entire premise is wrong here. The Borg don't need to assimilate the entire ship instantaneously. They are exactly where they wanted to be - in Humanity's past. Since there's a high probability that only one or two Borg beamed onto the ship before it exploded, or used the Trajector technology they assimilated sometime before ST: Picard, they can slowly take over the ship, deck by deck, without any rush - which is, of course, exactly what the movie tells us. The Borg queen wasn't in a rush to assimilate the Enterprise because she knows humans are very capable against the Borg. She assimilates only what she needs and that included Data. It wasn't the Borg that failed to take over the Enterprise, it was Data's humanity that stopped the Borg.

First Contact's pacing always seemed horribly off to me, even when I first saw it in the theater. I remember thinking, 'Why aren't the Borg just kicking their ass?' After watching your video, I agree it's the Borg Queen who messed up the usual strategy of dominate by assimilate. That particular point of the Queen halting the Borg's march up to where Picard is breaking things (little ships) in the ready room could have been played up more in the movie. It probably wasn't played up to save the shock value of Data surprising the Queen. Yeah, the collective was doing just fine before the Borg Queen decided to give a prime example of group think. "Settle down drones! We're going to play with this android. . . for as long as I feel like it." "???" "Because your QUEEN said so." ['Yeah. You look good with skin.'] "Was that good for you?"

Honestly the Borg who obviously could transport without detection should have just gone down to the planet waited till the enterprise said job well done and left then they would have had free reign of the planet bam they win. In this movie the Borg are In the lower half of the Enterprise right? Then lock out the computer, order all hands to the saucer section, separate the saucer section turn around and blow up the Borg half WIN!

Ok now I have always wondered this since watching the movie. One of the key counters to the borg was the installation of chips in the phasers to randomize the spectrum of the phaser. This made it so the phaser would rotate to a different spectrum every couple of shots. The ships don't seemed stopped by borg shielding so why are the borg phaser proof in this movie. I really want an answer.

In fairness, glass at an aquarium probably wouldn't be able to handle a strong rifle and OSHA wouldn't say anything about that. Safety measures are rarely wasted for extremely unlikely situations. Side note, the simple fact that the Borg captured two decks that didn't even exist means that they shouldn't have had any problems and is another bit in your favor.

My headcanon is that the Borg Queen is an anomaly caused by the Hugh individuality infection. She /says/ she always was, but since Picard's implants were picking up transmissions at that range, she just abused his trauma and tricked him into believing she was there then. And her very existence weakens the entire collective.

Worf along with the rest of the enterprise crew uses the TR-116 rifle. Borg drones turns around and runs away in fear. Picard walks into main engineering with a TR-116 rifle and blows the Queen's head off

I always assumed the borg beamed aboard when the defiant crew beamed aboard. They would have had to lower shields then would they not? I don’t remember the shields being down at the end of the time jump but I must be mistaken

That's what happens when you toy with an enemy you think you've defeated already... Things like this happen an you wind up losing... It's true in about EVERY franchise. In Trek's great rival, Darth Maul toyed with young Obi an got cut, literally, down. In Mass Effect, the Reapers was similar an similarly arrogant an got any number of bad things in their "you lose" screens. An then it happened here in this event too. In hindsight, you SHOULDN'T EVER issue a "fight hand to hand" Order to whomever you got left UNLESS you have a fair amount of decent or exceptional fighters. Even against major enemies like Borg an a HUGE issue is a distinct LACK of melee options for just such situations... Especially given Humans extensive selection to choose from and history with such fighting. Don't see the Borg adapting too well to a sledge hammer, sword or battle axe blow... You'd think SF would make SOMETHING like this standard issue options for fighting Borg an similar enemies. Or least a few options. An yet the ONLY time we ever see this is Janeway a lil with a very futuristic knife and the alternate reality reboot with Sulu's Sword, of which for the fight he was in there there's definitely better options if a sword is what your gonna have. P.S. At least Lopez isn't starving on that planet... Seems just like Starfleet too

On or around April 4th, could the whole thing have been an April fools joke by the Borg?

The Borg had already achieved their goal by the time they beamed to the Enterprise. A few drones were already safely frozen in the remote arctic where they could be woken up in a century and send the message that originally alerted the Borg to Earth, completing the time loop. The attack on Cochrane's launch site and the battle for the Enterprise were just to distract Picard from the true goal of the temporal incursion so he couldn't undo the timeloop and prevent the Borg from ever learning about the Federation. Fact is, the Borg were already in the beta quadrant on the edge of Federation space before Q, Who. They knew of the timeloop before Best of Both Worlds. So they likely knew their incursion with Locutus was going to fail. Everything they did with regards to 24th century Earth up to the point of First Contact was all predestined so that the timeloop was closed. So you could interpret it that Picard was assimilated solely to make the events of First Contact play out as required. Had Picard not been assimilated, he wouldn't have been able to destroy the cube, he wouldn't have been thinking incoherently because of his trauma, and he may have worked out the Borg's supposed plan to assimilate humanity as a primitive pre-warp society that had nothing of interest to assimilate made no logical sense. And then he might have worked out they were being kept distracted so as not to clean up all that Borg sphere debris they left in the arctic ice before returning to their own time.

I think SF needs to put down the phaser and pick up a 10mm SMG.

The biggest plot point imo (as always when timey wimey wobbely stuff is Introduced) is: if the Borg are able to travel back in time this far…why didn’t they do so in the delta quadrant and give their former selves a huge advantage in perfection and technology. The only reason I can think of is the Q continuum intervening, but giving the early collective such a technological boost would outrun any foothold in the alpha quadrant or preventing the federation’s existence

Realistically the Romulans should have volunteered to join the fight against the Borg, in fact everyone in the Alpha and Beta Quadrant should had joined in. If the Borg get Earth, _they_ are screwed as well. There's no way that the centre of the Federation becomes a Borg World and they don't then attack everyone else. The only _retconed_ reason the Romulans should let their traditional enemy be taken out by a existential threat to their very own existence is if they thought they had a effective anti Borg weapon in letting the Borg assimilate minds damaged by the Admonition.

With as many people converted into Borg before Data's encryption of the main computer why not send two teams of six Borg down to earth? By this time they could have come across a transporter room or one of several escape pods and use one way or both to do what they came to do, to take the pre Federation Earth.

Or perhaps they captured the Enterprise and "Star Trek The Next Generation" was a fantasy lived by captured Star Fleet officers in the Matrix.

In my opiniin The Borg are the perfect horror movie villain, and First Contact got them pretty well right. However, during the Voyager era, while it was nice to see The Borg get flushed out, it also feels like they got watered down. It was less about the knowledge of The Borg eleviating our fears, and more the writers dumbing them down and removing the horror aspect. I miss that feeling of dread The Borg gave, and while I still feel it before Voyager and during Enterprise, I don't feel it during Voyager except during Sporpion 1 & 2.

This is still my favourite Star Trek movie next to The Undiscovered Country. Wrath of Khan was probably better too, but I have seen that one so many times that I am kind of sick of it, it seemed to be the only Star Trek movie they showed on TV for years heh heh. Really, I never thought about any plot holes in First Contact before, I thought it was well done. The Borg tend to be very over-confident so, in theory, maybe that is why they lost this battle too, rather than advance aggressively and eliminate their enemy, they advanced at a moderate pace figuring their enemy was mostly irrelevant due to being inferior to The Borg. Also, maybe The Borg, realizing that they had limited resources and a limited timeframe to accomplish their task, chose to focus on accomplishing their task rather than risk possible delays through engaging in heavy combat with the few people left on the Enterprise.

Between this and the whole plot of Insurrection and the HUGE plot... Thing... in Generations I don't take much stock in the movies as far as how cannon they are.

The Borg have lost the ability to innovate passed adapting to phasers. They are farming the Federation for tech.

Why wouldn't the Borg transport on to the planet first and they could have had a much easier time assimilating lots of humans?

imho the villain of First Contact shouldn't have been the queen, but Picard himself. The movie would have had a more logical progression if Picard had subconsciously worked both sides. On one front, he works against the borg and lets his team have a temporary victory, while on the other he sabotages efforts of his own crew to let the borg win. It also would have been more reflective of his prior assimilation into the collective. The borg queen is one of the worst characters of ST ever. Before her, the borg were just that grey intimidating mechanism that demolished everything they came across, no leaders to talk to, just the uncompromising collective as a whole. With the queen, they became nothing but an extension of a comic book villain.

I still wanna know how the Defiant couldn't do the one thing it was originally designed to do 😂 fight and kill the borg

The Borg just decided to repeat Best of Both Worlds by invading the Alpha Quadrant with one cube, get blowed up, send a small sphere into the past... and stop FIrst Contact... while I enjoy the movie, it is incredibly stupid as a plot when you think about it

T 115 rifles or weapons need for physical damage. Did they learn nothing from the Klingons when it came to hand-to-hand combat. The Borg will adapt to energy weapons they don't adapt to tommy guns and blades

I do find it funny how at this point Worf is the only officer in Starfleet who brings a weapon to fight in close quarters with. Now I get it a phaser can take out most enemies but it's not like you haven't fought against races that can fight in close quarters but also have the ability to disable your phasers so why do you guys not have weapons for that.... come to think of it you still put people on Oberth ships so maybe Barclay was right and admirals really don't care about Starfleet personnel.
