Happy holidays everyone!! It feels weird posting this 3 days after Christmas, but I've been busy with my family and only recently finished this up. I hope everyone had wonderful holidays and will have a great new years!! 🥳

Being an adult is realizing The Grinch was right. I wouldn't want to spend the holidays around the Whos either if I could avoid it. The fact that the Whos are also bullies just adds icing on the cake.

Fun fact: The table scene was not scripted! They wanted Jim Carrey to pull it off and have everything go flying off the table for a gag. But Carrey is such a master at it he kept doing it perfectly, so finally, he just went back and knocked everything off by hand, and that's the take they went with.

There's a very popular theory that his speech about all the Christmas presents he finds in the dump is also an explanation for how he got Max. Just a little Christmas puppy that someone didn't bother taking back and just up and dumped.

What broke me was realizing Max the dog was a rejected Christmas gift and was thrown away which is how Grinch took him in

In addition to the bit about Martha May wearing bits of his gift in her hair during the interview, she's consistently wearing green somewhere in her outfit or makeup the entire movie right up until the end when he's actually at her side carving the roast beast. So heckin cute.

When Martha May's telling her side of the story, she has remnants of the Grinchs gift in her hair.

I so badly want to see a spin-off story just about Martha May and The Grinch! 🥰 The two of them are basically the Gomez and Morticia Addams of the Dr Seuss universe!

This is one of my favorite Christmas movies ever! Jim Carrey's performance is spectacular, the entire film is quotable, and it's a fun take on the classic Dr. Seuss tale. I love how we got to see an origin story for the Grinch, since it wasn't really explained in the source material (both book and 1960s cartoon). This movie also does a very good job conveying the message "Christmas is much more than it seems".

I’m Team Grinch. He’s the hero we didn’t deserve. The Whos are the villains but not everyone can handle that. Absolutely my favorite Christmas movie to the point I’ll watch it year round.

Martha May Whovie’s costumes are absolute perfection in this movie

I hear a lot of people badmouth this movie for some of the more vulgar jokes. Normally, that would be a dealbreaker for me as well, because I have a particularly low tolerance for vulgarity inserted into properties originally intended for younger children (one of many reasons why I hate The Cat In The Hat with Mike Myers). 😤 However, here it never bothered me, because the vulgar jokes only come from The Grinch himself, who even before this movie was was vulgar and disgusting character. Dr Seuss himself even wrote that famous song describing how disgusting and vulgar his creation was. 😎

Honestly the teacher laughing is a small town thing as well, small towns are so about names and where you go that even teachers will do that. I wanted Grinch to throw the tree at her 😂 Edit: also did you notice Martha’s face when he opened the razor? It was so sad :(

Saw a post recently that theorized that the grinch is a who but was sent to the wrong whoville. He belongs to the Horton hears a who universe. Looking at their design it's pretty spot on.

I was also really surprised when I first found out that this movie is divisive! It's been one of my family's favorites since it first came out when I was a kid, and it's one of a handful that I watch pretty much every year. Glad to see someone else who enjoys it and considers it a classic!

Carrey I believe was Ron Howard with the "Max is a reindeer" rehearsal, and it was actually improvised because the dog kept taking the nose off.

I used to have the children's book version of this movie, with the buttons you would push to make sounds. And I thought the Grinch's mask was weird then! And given the fact that the Grinch saved her life and that she learned that he was nice enough to make Martha a fancy handmade angel gift as a child, it's no surprise why Cindy thinks he's kind of sweet.

I always thought the who world was like in Horton Hears a Who where they live on a speck of dust. It gets caught in a snowflake and the world is like a winter wonderland, and then when it melts, it's like summer.

I had Grinch themed Christmas decorations this year. It was the only thing that put me into the Christmas spirit 😂. Christmas hits different as an adult living alone, I mean I still spend it with my family (minus this year because 🙄 people are stupid) but it's lost its innocence so to speak or it's spark. All everyone cares about is things. It's sad.

I can understand how fans of the book or the original animation struggle with this film. In live action the Who's and even the Grinch are a little gross. I dont know if its the prosthetics or the cinematography used to hide them... I love the film but was never brought up on the Dr. Seuss material. For me it's a glorious Jim Carrey vehicle. In this world his comedic energy feels just right; it's a big meta cartoon. It's a weirdly cynical Christmas movie but that's why I think so many people enjoy it. Rather than saccharin it considers the worst commercial aspects of Christmas and finds hope at the end. It may never get the love it deserves but in the UK its No1 on Netflix every year

I love the way Jim Carrey sang the iconic song "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" while adding his own comedic elements to it like the hilarious sound effects. And his freak out when the sleigh takes off. "We're going to die!! We're going to die!! I'm going to throw up, and then I'm going to die!! Mommy, tell it to stop!!" Also, I really love how the actress who played Cindy Lou, Taylor Momsen went on to be the front woman and lead singer of a band called The Pretty Reckless. Also, I can sympathize with the Grinch, having been a victim of bullying growing up. I know the feeling of not liking people because of it. Side notes: I would *LOVE* to have Martha May's Santa outfit, her Whobilation gown and her flowing robe. (in my size, of course. I'm quite a bit taller and thicker than Christine Baranski) Augustus May Who is the true villain, and I never feel bad when the Grinch gets back at him for the years of torment by shaving his Quaker Oats mascot hair. 😆🤣

tbh the Jim Carrey version of You're A Mean One, Mr Grinch is definitely my favorite, the man has a great voice

Grinch is literally my favourite Christmas-movie or movie movie. My favourite scene is probably when Max the dog takes his Rudolf-nose off.

Merry Christmas Everybody! How The Grinch Stole Christmas is a classic!

A- None of this would be possible without Dr. Seuss' original story. A hairy green Scrooge-like character whose heart is changed by the spirit of community and love. I am a BIG fan of Seuss' work; love to read about Theodore Seuss Geisel's backstory, how he got into cartoons, then children's books, etc. Love it. B- The '60s cartoon version is still the best, "purest" adaptation- being simply the book read aloud verbatim, with a few extra visual gags and some songs for fun. The animation of Chuck Jones, and the voice of Boris Karloff, and the pipes of Thurl Ravenscroft's deep deep "You're a Mean One" came together to create a classic. This film wouldn't exist without that animated short. C- Jim Carrey is a marvelously talented human being, with a face that was custom-made for cartoonish characters like The Mask and the Grinch. It's a bummer that the makeup process was so uncomfortable and torturous for him, but ya can't argue with results: he looks GREAT! And his natural (or un-natural?) facial expressions come through so well, he just sells the whole thing. Absolutely nobody else could possibly have done what he did. D- I take some issue with the way that the majority of Whoville is caught up in the commercial aspect of Christmas being about toys and lights and such. The original story implied that all the Who's were more or less pure of heart the whole time, needing no convincing to sing around the tree without their gifts. This version makes the Mayor character the worst bully and worst covetous anti-Christmas-spirit Who in town- but he's not alone; all his classmates join in on the mocking in school, and most of the town are laughing at him upon his return. It takes one little girl and her father (who takes a while but eventually gets there) to point out the true Spirit of Christmas being not about things, but about love. It helps to fill up the feature-length run time; gives the Grinch time for a backstory; makes for a more suspenseful climax of the film. But I still prefer the "pure" spirit of the original story, in many ways. E- All that being said, I do so enjoy this film! Carrey is the star, of course! Little Cindy Lou Who is adorable, and a precocious darling of acting and sincerity. (That she grew up to front a hard core band is pretty cool!). The supporting cast of character actors all turn in wonderful performances. The DESIGN of this Seuss-inspired setting is superb! The sets, costumes, makeup, everything is so off-kilter and zany and fun! Love it. F- I have not see the more recent computed animated version. I'm curious to, but have yet to get around to it. I'm sure I will, eventually.

My theory with the garbage disposal tube is that it's basically a vacuum tube switcher. In 40's and 50's, there used to be a tube system where you put a tube with a paper in it and it would go from one room and floor to another.

I grew up watching the original animated film with my parents, and by the time this film came out, I had seen just about every old animated Seuss movie. When I saw this version, I simply went "That was a fun live-action take on this story.", and never watched it again. It's fun to look back on it now through the eyes of people for whom it was (and is) just as beloved to them as the cartoon was to me. 😊

As much as I love Just Stop because of his other videos (re: “Death by Nicktoon: A Network Retrospective”), I just can’t help but feel like his defense towards the 2000 version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas (alongside the 2008 Horton Hears a Who) in “To Adapt a Seuss: The Good, The Bad and the Loose” (and just when we thought that Just Stop would describe the 1966 version as “The Good” because who wouldn’t?, the 2018 version as “The “Loose” and the 2000 version as “The Bad” because of its overly desaturated colour scheme which is one of the many flaws even a critic as flawed as Nostalgia Critic actually pointed out like the mayor kissing Max’s ass (and yes, this is the same guy that made “Why Many People Still Like AVGN and Hate Nostalgia Critic” and while I do like this video, I think they both seem to have a bad reputation as fallen titans nowadays, especially considering NC’s infamous review of The Wall which is such an underappreciated movie not just because some people actually think he was right, but also because they don’t see the magic, passion, beautiful animation that is like in the 1997 Hercules and etc in this movie) is ignoring (and justifying) the flaws this movie has to offer just to make it look better than the original (re: “the children have more personality than they had in the originals”). But he was right, about the rest of these Dr. Seuss feature films (except for the 2018 Grinch, that is my guilty pleasure) being hot garbage and that we all have different opinions we need to feel free to have. :)

Even if Jim Carrey does have a rubber face, The Grinch's smile in the intro is enhanched with CGI in order to exaggerate it as the prosthetics hindered Carrey from doing his full potential facial expressions.

I actually watched one of the deleted scenes and he actually saves a woman from choking on a marble he had sent flying to cause chaos! And i was literally just thinking about his parents like, he was ten. But then Thinking about it, I was like...they can't really force him to come back. He would just leave again. So maybe they just dropped food into the chutes for him to eat. Also he is...SO naked
