This movie is such an accurate representation of teen/adolescent girls. It makes me mad that critics label this movie ‘cringe’ when in reality, society just loves to put down the interests and lives of adolescent/teen girls.

That's part of the reason why I'll never be able to show these movies to my mother, not because of my relationship with her but because of her relationship with my grandma. My grandma would rather die than show a fraction of self-awareness or apologize for the decades worth of emotional abuse.
@michellecollinsgalaviz2126

But I do believe this movie did a better job at redeeming the mother at least. Abuela was just a freaking wall and quite frankly a bully to Mirabel all throughout Encanto (as latin abuelas tend to be with their least favorite grandchildren), so her apology at the end and the acceptance thereafter seemed too unreal and undeserved. Don’t get me wrong, the overprotective, borderline-codependent mom did a lot of questionable things (telling the boy at the store off, making every thing a public affair as if defending her “little girl”), but every single thing was clearly done in good intention, as misguided as they were.

You'll notice that when Mei Mei asks if the ritual has ever actually failed, she is only ever told that "it can't". Because it has never actually failed. Every single piece of information and instruction passed down through her family has been anti-individuality propaganda. 1. The panda is not triggered by strong emotions. The panda is triggered by your survival instincts. Sun-lee originally called upon the red panda to protect her villiage/family. And by changing the narrative (in order to control their daughters) the women in this family have made this an impossible test. The more you supress your emotions, the more your inner turmoil increases. And the more on edge you are, the more everything starts to feel like an attack. Think about it, Mei lost control after the mini-mart incident, after the pad ambush, ad after Tyler's bullying. The mom lost her cool and scratched the grandmother when she felt her relationship was under attack. 2. No one has ever failed the ritual, so how woud they even know whether or not you can perform it again? How would they know how many tries they get? 3. Letting the panda out doesn't actually make it more powerful, it empowers the woman attached to it. Mei didn't slowly lose her grip, and no one else ever had their panda long eough to truly find out the rules behind it.

As much as I like the idea of the panda being triggered by self-protective instincts rather than strong emotions in general, there's one scene that doesn't line up with that idea, and that's the scene in the bathroom, when Abby asked Mei to let her hug the panda, and Mei used a mental image of one of her fantasies to bring the panda out.

You legit don't have to relate to every movie in order to enjoy it. As a native American bisexual woman, most of the movies that have ever been made don't relate to me on personal levels. But I still enjoy them because I know life isn't all about me, these 40 year old men who get mad cause they can't relate to being a 13 year old Asian-Canadian girl need to realise that too. Even though I didn't relate entirely to the cultural aspect of the movie, there was many other smaller details to the story I related to. You don't need to 100% see yourself in a character to find it enjoyable or relatable, you just need to find what you CAN relate to if that's what really matters to you and if you can't then broadening your horizons a bit by experiencing and understanding different kinds of people than yourself is a GOOD thing.

I think the grandma meant that the more Mei let the panda out the more attached she would be to the panda (Note the strings connecting her to her panda when going through the mirror to separate. Her mom and other relatives had no trouble passing through) and the harder the ritual to lock it away would be. I don’t think it had anything to do with the pandas strength. Love your reactions and your hair looks amazing 🙌

I think the whole metaphor represented by the ritual is the act of supressing your emotions. I think the warning means that by indulging in your emotions (letting the panda out) it becomes harder to supress them.

I thought the reason the mom’s panda was so big in comparison to the grandma’s and the aunties’ was because the mom sort of repressed the panda until she met her future husband. She for sure looks like an avoider/Lives in denial. For example, she can’t even fathom that Mei would do something as daring as a marketing scheme to get what she wants (4Town concert tickets) because she herself would never dare to contradict her own mother until she met Meilin’s dad… I don’t know. That or the betrayal she felt when Mei left her side was unbearable, and the aunties and the grandma didn’t really have that big of emotions anymore or at that point in their life.

Regarding the "Awooga" part - it's meant to represent a cartoonish car klaxon (horn) sound. It was popular in the 90s and early 2000s to make that sound when you saw a hot person. You might encounter it in other movies, such as "The Mask" with Jim Carey.
@bobob9969
@bobob9969 2 жыл бұрын
The Mask was directly referencing an old cartoon "red hot riding hood" which came out in the 1940s. Ever since then it was like a running gag to reference it. I think turning red was supposed to be like a mix of western cartoon and 90s anime

The thing with "the more often you let it out, the harder it gets to control"... well, it simply isn't true. We see Mei gaining more and more control of her transformation throughout the movie, and in the end she is capable of transforming at will. I suspect her mother and grandmother tell her it get's harder to control probably because they never really tried to actively control it, only tried to completely surpress it. Mei's conversation with her grandma even has this part: Grandma: "...and then you will be bound to it foreever." Mei: "Has this ever happened?" Grandma: "It cannot happen." -> she is speaking from concern, but not from experience

They lived with the gift for hundreds of years just fine. But when it became awkward and “inconvenient” as Asian immigrants to Canada and they started suppressing it it started a belief that the panda was uncontrollable. Could also be a metaphor about Asian immigrants forgetting their culture and being forced to become more “American” and basically whitewashed to fit in. (I know it’s Canada but I’m sure they did something similar)

I loved this movie. Even though I can't relate to the culture, I can relate to being a cringy 13 year old girl. We are really out here acting like that lol. It was kind of nice to compare to some of my memories and think back to those times with my friends (most of whom I am still close with at 22). I think a lot of hate people give to this film is honestly because it isn't the kind of film we see a lot. Usually "cringy teen girl" isn't shown in a positive light and the stuff teenage girls like, such as boy bands and soft animals, are seen as weird or made fun of a lot. This movie really asks the audience to take those experiences at face-value and understand that it is all part of growing. Guarantee every single person watching this has a cringy memory from middle school and I encourage you to look back on it and smile and laugh. Yeah, it was probably embarrassing but it was fun back then right? I'm a middle school teacher now and seeing kids making those memories is my favorite part of the job. Are my 7th graders probably going to regret wearing matching "I ♡ my bf/gf" sweatshirts every single day for 2 months? Big time. The kid who dyed their hair with kool-aid and it is super patchy? 100%. But it's cute and silly, that's how kids are at this age! I think a big part of the issue people have with this film is also how unapologetic it is about things like periods and how pervy teen girls can be. Periods?? Happen???? To so many people???? Everyday?? What a concept. Teen girls shouldn't feel embarrassed about a normal bodily function and nobody should think periods are "gross" or "inappropriate" for them to talk about. I thought that including periods was rather refreshing since you never see them in movies except for comedy purposes or a Carrie situation. Also, people who thought her drawing were way out of line. I discovered Wattpad at 13. Enough said. Overall, adorable movie with a lot of nostalgia value for me. Even if I can't relate to some aspects of the culture, I can appreciate that and learn about others and the experiences that I've seen many people relating to.

Yes, we'd expect her mom to have noticed those red eyebrows, and I agree that it should have been one of the top two things her mother thought of. I figure that both events happened much later in Ming's life (back when I was a teen in the 60s, girls were not getting their periods until 15 or 16 or even as old as 18. Just within my lifetime, it's dropped almost ten years. I blame the chemicalization of the environment and early weight gain in children. That final fight between Mei and Ming mirrored the fight between Ming and Grandma Wu was funny, but it was also very uncomfortable to watch. In her anger provoked by her mother, she was striking her mother with everything she had. Mei was angry beyond control, which often happens with adolescents before they learn to manage their emotions. It was the same ferocity as the fight had been between Ming and Wu, in which Ming had physically scarred her own mother and permanently damaged their relationship. That was the stakes in the fight between Mei and Ming. I think this movie is actually intended for Millennials who were young teens in the early 2000s and have children now who are about to become young teens. This movie directly reminds Millennials about all the extremes, the emotions, the conflicts, the awkwardness of their young teen years, and it warns them to begin talking about those things with their children right now. Jen: What has your mother told you about her panda? Mei: Nothing. That's the point of the movie. Millennial parents need to start talking to their children about their "pandas."

My favorite thing is that it's clear that the kids knew the rule of "no snitchin'" once the panda became a thing at school. If they wanted to keep that fun going, they needed to make sure no one blabbed to the teachers. Schoolyard rules are serious business.

I feel like this movie is super relatable. Coming from a Mexican household there is definitely a lot of intergenerational trauma plus I still have really strict parents and I am 25. It really never ends at least for my Mexican household. When the mom apologized I was actually shock just because that won't ever happen with my parents. Plus being the oldest in my family does not help the situation I just learned to bottle up my emotions and deal with things on my own. I love that Pixar/Disney are coming out with more movies that focus on this topic. I thought it was cringy in a good way just because it was super relatable for teen girls growing up and having to deal with periods and being embarrassed also dealing with skater hair boys lol Overall I thought this movie was great. Sorry I went on a whole rant but I love your reactions and I'm glad you are back you look like your glowing😁

there is objectively nothing wrong with this movie in my mind. it’s the people watching it that are the problem! this movie was adorable, i love meimei and 4Town. im not asian, but i am a young girl and i thoroughly enjoyed this movie. it makes me happy seeing others represented. i also just love animated films and the style of this movie is so lovely! there’s one scene at the beginning of a koi pond that still has me in awe. like u said, there are lessons in this movie! parents often forget how they felt as kids and embarrass their children or force ideals into them without considering their feelings. as a kid, you don’t always recognize why your parents act the way they do until you’re older and aware of things like generational trauma. not that it excuses anything, but it is an explanation. seriously just a lovely movie that does not deserve the criticism it’s gotten by boring old people. also, i love how much y’all match 😭

I like the theory that the panda changes sizes based on how intense their emotions are when they turn into it. So Sun Yee’s size was huge during the war where she felt fear, rage, and was desperate to protect her daughters and village. When we see her panda at the end of the film she’s more calm and happy thus a smaller size. Ming has had to control her emotions because of the trauma she’s had to face trying to be perfect for her overbearing mother as well as dealing with the guilt of harming her own mother in a fit of anger. When her panda is finally released after so many years of repressed emotions and the anger of having everything come down on her; the panda is massive. Mei Mei has been getting support from her friends which is how she’s able to control hers and keep a clear head most of the time (both in and out of panda mode.) Her friends never made her feel like a freak and they never saw the panda as something dangerous.

from my understanding a lot of the talk about "the panda becoming out of control and too powerful" was a fearmongering by the family, likely from the grandmother telling the mother this, and then mother assuming the same for Mei. I interpreted it as a sort of expectation for women (especially asian women) to put others before themselves and repress their stronger emotions, so these women all put their emotions (panda) in the talisman, whereas Mei broke that cycle.
@sapphic.flower
@sapphic.flower 2 жыл бұрын
I was confused by how they said the panda gets stronger each time Mei let’s it out too but I think they’re just referring to the bond with it so when the time comes to separate it, it’s harder. That’s why when the ritual came, Mei had a way harder time going through that mirror portal than the other women in her family who literally just walked right through it.

I think the "don't keep your panda because the more you turn the harder it gets control" might have been just something to get you to do the ritual in general. And it doesn't even necessarily come from a bad place but more like out of convience? You're not in the spotlight and it makes it easier to live a normal life when you sealed away your panda. Being normal would also be a lot safer, especially in older times and maybe that's how it all started. Maybe noo one really knew what would really happen if you'd actually live with an unsealed panda since nobody had ever done it before mei

I love this movie so much and the scene where Mei guides her mother through the forest (aka her trauma) always makes me emotional because that's basically what I've been doing for half of my life now with my mom. The only difference is my grandma would rather die than show even a fraction of self-awareness or apologize for the decades of emotional abuse and neglect she put my mom through.

This movie just hit me so hard. I've always been a people pleaser, overachiever, and perfectionist, and I saw a lot of myself in Mei's character and her interactions with her mother. Watching her mother saying that she was sick of being perfect and not good enough for anyone gets me sobbing every single time I watch this movie. I actually connected with this movie way more than I did with Encanto because of the bond between Mei and her mother. Mei and her mother are actually very close and they actually get along, while in Encanto Mirabel and Abuela Alma don't really have much of a connection. In Turning Red, the parental figure is far more overbearing, while in Encanto the parental figure was way more distant (I know that was probably an important story beat but still). Ultimately, I love this movie. If someone says you can't relate to this because it's only for a very specific demographic, then that sucks. This turned out to be a huge paragraph. Much love!

I loved this movie. I thought it was so fun, the characters are all memorable and realistic. Everybody has flaws and I feel like the flaws are acknowledged, too, and aren't just brushed aside for humor. I love love love love it when the Dad says that people are messy and that they have to learn to live with the messy parts. I think a lot of the criticism for this movie is just based in racism and misogyny tbh. I've seen a lot of people say they can't relate because the protagonist is a teenage Chinese-Canadian girl and that they, the viewer, are not. Yeah, you're not a toy or a car either, but I bet you liked Toy Story and Cars, lol. I love this movie. I think there's a legit interpretation that the mom and grandma were straight up LYING about how bad being the panda is, or the permanence of it. At best, they were simply exaggerating it. Because the movie itself shows that undergoing the ritual isn't that hard (if you're not that attached to your panda), and that even after you've sealed it away, you can always break the seal and become a panda again. And I think that's the true lesson of the movie. Whatever messy side of you that you have, it'll always be there whether you suppress it or not. And it's not even necessarily a bad thing to suppress it (for the mom, the panda clearly represented her anger issues). The only bad thing is to not acknowledge it.

Even being an American and stuff, I can actually relate some with the overbearing helicopter-parent thing. As well as, just wanting to make your parents proud and accepted for who you are(which I still don't have) so that line with the mom apologizing for unintentionally teaching/passing down the toxic trauma, especially the line "So don't hold back for anyone. The farther you go, the prouder I'll be." hit me really hard 'cause it's all I ever wanted to hear from my mom.

I was hoping you'd review this one. Personally I loved it, my dork soul could empathize with the main casts trials and tribulations. I never understood the whole "people won't be able to empathize with this unless they are XYZ" or "omg teenage girls being horny how could you sexualize them!!!11one". I'm sorry, I KNEW teenage girls when I was a teenager thank you. THAT. THAT RIGHT THERE was tumblr. Don't start me on the fics that I was subjected to...oh god... My partner was cackling. I would just look at the movie, look to her, nod, and she'd cackle again. The boy band...everything...god that was early 2k the mood. Can I just point out when they're talking about their bias and they get to "the rest" and the girls are like "And their good too!!!"...I was like "I did not give you permission to call me out like that how dare you." That is happening right now this second, find a fandom. It was lovely, my partner being Asian American was like "there... there..." my nerdy niece was like was like "oh look it's me". I really thought it was really fun. It talked about a lot of important things, maturely, had a good story and was cute. And the panda's made me smile.

Since you asked...I'm pretty sure we're meant to infer the red panda being "uncontrollable"-becoming so strong that it overtakes you-wasn't _literally_ true; it was only assumed to be true by the family based on their own experiences. Remember, Sun Yee never sealed hers and she was fine. But they're living in an era without either a use or an outlet for it. -One that Mei finds for herself. I think the story makes the most sense when interpreted, not purely literally or purely metaphorically, but with a dose of both. Because I think some [of the] story elements are in-universe worldbuilding, and some are metatext [meant] for the audience, and so people are going to have different interpretations of how metaphorical the story is. Therefore, my interpretation is that because "the red panda" is less of a character or plot point than it is a metatextual theme, said panda "overtaking oneself" or not was part of the symbolism rather than the lore. It was always going to be possible for that _not_ to happen to Mei, because her character arc isn't about how she got [her] generational trauma, but how she would choose to respond to it. So, from a writing standpoint, it makes sense; from a "worldbuilding lore" perspective, I can see why it seems like a plot hole, though! 😄

What Mei's family said about the red panda transformations is that the more she did it the more difficult it will be to seal the spirit away. So Mei can transform no problem as long as she stabalizes her emotions and change forms however she wants. It'll just be very difficult to seal her red panda form should she choose to.

the only people i've seen hating on this movie are mainly teenage boys that think it's too "cringey" to be good, but that's the whole point of the movie. it was made to be cringey, to show that relatable side of people's teenage years and how we all have our cringey ways of life. they say they don't relate to the movie but i'm sure at some point of their life they were like tyler, they just don't realize it.

I think a point the movie is trying to make is that the women in Mei's family are so out of touch and afraid of their panda's that they don't really know how it works. Meanwhile, Mei actively works on understanding her panda and she realizes that it's not a threat at all, as long as you keep balance. Also! I just made the connection that I was also due on the 4th but born on the 5th lmao

I think the longer she has the panda, the more control she has over it (and the more powerful it becomes, hence the booster jumps, super-saiyan energy, and the mega head-butt). But none of her elders kept the panda long enough to find out much about their abilities. Mei couldn’t land that jump at the temple when she ran away from school, but after panda’ing for a month she could rocket-jump over buildings and skydive without going splat. I SO wish this was a game, I would play it! Excellent hair btw!!
