How the villagers of Mandla reclaimed their land from the clutches of Lantana

Lantana camara an exotic plant with pretty flowers is one of the top 10 most invasive plant species in the world. The species originally belonged to the stretch between Mexico and Brazil, but today, it has spread across the world and has its grip on more than 60 countries, diligently carving its way to degrade its forests. Lantana was brought to India by the British as an Ornament plant. Since then, It has taken over our forests and has completely dominated our indigenous species of plants. Today, Lantana has spread to more than 50% of India's forest land and occupies 40 per cent of India’s tiger range alone. The Invasive shrub has caused a great loss to not only the country's biodiversity but the farming income as well. Most of the barren lands have been taken over by the shrub and are deemed unfit for any cultivation.
But a small district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh is showing the way by irradicating Lantana and reclaiming their land from this invasive shrub. This is their story.

Honestly, Madhya Pradhesh is probably a leading state when it comes to environment. Cleanest cities in the country. Sustainable agricultural growth. Land reclaimation from landfills.

So what was the protocol used to remove these plants ? It would be nice to see a longer version of reporting on this topic that covers how lantana removal has been handle in various states of India. This can give people who are watching the piece ideas of how to initiate such programs in their local regions as lantana such a highly invasive species.

इस लांटना पौधे की वजह से ही जम्मू के सारे जंगल खत्म हो रहे हैं यहां इतनी ज्यादा मात्रा में लांटना है कि खत्म करना बहुत मुश्किल है

@Down To Earth Much appreciated informative video. This is the reason I like your channel because you bring forward new and important subjects which need to be addressed. Coming to Lantana's video.. I have a doubt. What we have to do with the waste after removing the Lantana. Not every part is useful to make furniture. It is also not possible to make them useful at every place where we remove them. Also, even if we do so, there will still be some leftovers like small size logs, tips of branches and possible flowers and seeds which are again dangerous(dangerous for human health too) because they sprout again. So, please advise me on this. Because in our State Andhra Pradesh we have this Lantana in huge amounts. This information will help me to address this situation as I am planning to start natural agriculture/farming soon. This information will not only help me but also let me help other farmers to educate on this occupying and dangerous non native plant. I am also planning to educate farmers on the 'Parthenium hysterophorus' plant which is another non native dangerous plant. If possible, make a video on this too..

There a few options to avoid that. Some grass species might cover and protect the land. If the land is agricultural, it might be beneficial to use a cover crop or switch to plantation of trees which will be beneficial in long term as well but will require much more effort initially.

Lantana blasts it's seeds and spread all over area. I think it's needed to plucked from roots.

How to remove this plant if it grows too close to an existing tree? The roots are probably entangled and cutting it down to the ground hasn't worked. It just grew back quickly.

They at least need some or the other water source... Deserts are devoid of such hydrographic arrangements. Only thorny bushes and certain xerophytic species can survive in the desert!

इसकी लकड़ी का बुरादा बना दो और बेचो फैक्टरीयो में जलाने के काम आएगा ज्यादा बुरादा हो तो खड्डे में डाल कर खाद बना खाद बना लो और बेचो इससे इसको निकालने वाले मजदूरों की थोड़ी मजदूरी भी भी निकल जायेगी और लेंटाना उन्मूलन के लिए लगने वाला खर्च भी कम होगा
