Just one thing that might help: when a colour is picked form a swatch, read the brightness value from the palette and match it with the "location percentage" in the gradient mask. In this way you will get the exact colour.

Also when picking the color from a swatch, it's better to change the "Sample size" from 'Point Sample' to some thing bigger like '11 by 11'

If I may offer my advice (I’ve been a professional retoucher in NYC since 1999)- make a selection of whatever you need to select, and then make that a GROUP. Inside that group, add your gradient maps one by one- as opposed to having a different mask for each adjustment layer. This way, if you need to change the mask, you only have to do it once per selection instead of on each individual layer. You can also nestle multiple groups within the main group- say, lips. Make one main group with the lips masked out, then inside that group make a layer or group for each color you need to match to. It will save you lots of headache later, trust me! Great video though. Well done.

Thanks my friend, but this obviously isn’t how i normally work. This was a basic tutorial and I wanted people to see the layers I’d created to understand where I was taking the selections from, but you’re right. That’s better file organisation.

I honestly learn so much from your videos. You are one of the fews that I still follow through the years due to the fact that you stay humble, practical, uplifting, informative and nothing to do with web celebrity style. Wish I was not in Sweden but in London to go to some of your photo walks. Would be nice chatting with you in person. Once again, great job! Commend your wife for her great shots as well.

Nice voice, on-point tutorials! Thank you very much! I know, it's an older tutorial, but maybe I've got a little advice too: When you're selecting a color with the eyedropper tool from a non-solid color like paint on skin it really can help to set the sample size in the upper-left corner to 5x5 or 10x10 to get the average color around the selected pixel - just to avoid selecting a pixel that's influenced by the noise of that image. :)

Love that you took a step away from the usual type of video that you do. What I really can't wrap my head around is how you selected the dress from the first photo without getting the holes in it. You go to the mask layer with a white brush and paint over the holes, where you want them to be. You can also correct yourself with switching between black and white brush (press "X" when in the mask layer) and paint the gradient back. You can also play with opacity. If you know that the dress is semi-transparent in some places, you can set the opacity of the brush as you wish.
@Loweren
@Loweren 4 жыл бұрын
When you use a tool like Quick Selection Brush, there's an option on the top panel that reads "Refine Selection". When you click on it, you can paint over your mask with a Refine Selection Brush, which automatically excludes background and holes from your selection. It's very useful when selecting hair, for example.

That's a much more efficient way to recolor something! Until now I changed the value and hue + saturation with 2 layers. But I had no idea you could use a gradient map to do it all in one but also keep it flexible. Very nice one. I guess everytime you think you know all tricks in Ps, you learn a new one! 😄 I'll definitely use this new technique.
