Oh my word, I was shocked at how much this video resonated with me. I know I struggle justifying getting rid of things but it really came home to me when you were gong through the laundry bin with the storage items and other 'useful' things. As soon as you picked a piece up, my own mind went straight to thinking how you might use it in your house 😮😮. That hit me like a brick!! Thank you for helping to highlight this, it's made a real impact and I can face my appallingly cluttered house with a different view. I want a house that is calm and spacious, that supports me and not overwhelms me. Thank you Dawn 🤗🤗

Dawn, today I was at Walmart, waiting for a tire sensor to be replaced on my car, and I was told to come back in an hour and a half. Since I live 30 miles from there and didn't have a ride, I was basically held hostage at Wally World. There was no waiting room or a place to sit and read, so I wandered around the store aimlessly and picked up the few groceries I needed. I was proud of myself until I went thru the Christmas isles, where things found their way into my shopping cart. However, thanks to you, I said to myself ...Margie, you don't need any of these things, so before I paid for my groceries, I returned all the other items to the shelves where I found them. I left the store without any extras and no credit card debt! ~Margie🤗❄🎄☃

Marketing is to separate us from our hard earned money. When you find something you "have to have", put it in your cart and walk around the store doing your shopping or browsing. By the time you are ready finished it is almost a guarantee you will decide what is in your cart is something you really don't need anyway and leave w/o buying.

@@jillianguilford5191 yes! win-win-win!!! Browse, see cute things, have a "lightbulb moment" of realizing we don't NEED (or even REALLY want) these extra, cute things... then go back and put them on their proper shelves (rather than just ditching them in some random place in the store, which would cause more work for the store staff), spend less money, be proud of ourselves for practicing discipline, AND we get more STEPS in for the day!

Donations around trash day? That's an awesome idea! Dawn I have to tell you this. I've been decluttering for years now (taking mental breaks and breaks for living life) in spite of a family member who doesn't care about it. I've done it in front of the hubs all this time. Guess what? This year he gave me a book to take to the thrift store. Now he comes up with items for thrift store deliveries every time I deliver and is tossing his own stuff that needs to go to trash. He even cleaned out half of the garage. Nothing short of a miracle! I never once pressured him, just kept doing it in front of him admittedly often grumbling in my head. I think some folks who are resistant aren't sure what it'll feel like to give away a possession so it took that one book as the first baby step. Thank you for encouraging us to keep going! 😍

I passed by a woman in a store who was saying, “I’m into gnomes this year, I don’t know why” I felt like turning around and saying it’s because every store has been advertising and marketing them to you. They are all over the place as the new must have Christmas decor. It’s not a mystery, it’s marketing.

In reference to point #3 about overthinking- it’s amazing how carefully we consider letting things leave our home, but we barely think about letting things come into our home. We have so many ways that things come in, but rarely establish a method for things going out. Gotta plug the hole in your boat (point #1) before you can empty out the water!!

I discovered a very different reason I had clutter. I had blindness to clutter so I took photos. I could see and analyze the problem areas in the photos but not with my eyes. Crazy? Maybe. But I realized something. The most cluttered areas were piled up in areas where traumatic events happened in my house. I had a ‘rough’ marriage. (To the point I authored a book, under pen name Regina Evanston - Love You to Pieces). I thought it was an interesting insight that may help others. I’m now an inspiring minimalist. Not even close yet but each go round in my home feels SO good.

Wow! What perspective! Thanks for sharing the interesting tool you used - photography - in order to "see" the clutter! You used past tense when speaking about your marriage - I'm happy to hear you are out of it! Bless you!

That makes perfect sense. How many times have you seen a photo of a person or a group of people with distracting stuff in the background? Nobody notices it while the photo is taken, but it sticks out like a sore thumb in the photograph. Being a professional videographer (retired) and an amateur photographer, I am very aware of surroundings during a photo shoot or video recording. (P.S. I think you meant to say "aspiring" minimalist, but your post is certainly inspirational. It may be just the advice some people need!)

Very insightful. I feel stuck with my clutter and also had a two bad marriages. Also health issues. I can tell by a box that accumulated when I was having a health crisis and revisiting it to go through the box will bring up all those feelings again. So I keep moving the boxes from place to place.

I've never once regretted a decluttering decision, even sentimental items. This is the most satisfying past-time. My mother taught this to me from an early age. A good one is to walk around the store with an item in your hands, pretend you own it and by the time you're ready to leave you'll often find you don't even want it anymore.

I may sound crazy but I’m ready to take down the few Christmas decorations I put up. All I have is the tree, a nativity scene, a sparsely decorated mantle, some picture frames with kids Santa pictures from years past, a couple of smaller trinkets, a a city scene in the dining room and a music box my sister gave me years ago. And that’s nothing compared to last year. I’ve gotten rid of most of my stuff. Next year I’m getting a smaller tree. I have a couple of trees in the building I might get rid of too.

I have a hard time resisting buying new stuff so I just don’t go shopping. Except for the grocery store and the library, I avoid stores all together. If I need something, I bring my husband and tell him not to let me buy anything except what we came in for. He hates shopping so it also keeps me from lingering. After several years of decluttering, my home is now calm, clean and clutter-free. Even our minimal Christmas decorations are making my house feel too full.

Yes! I've heard other "influencers" refer to this as "shop your closet." It is fun and resourceful, to find new ways to use/combine items we already have! I've been doing this lately, and sometimes put a different spin on it when friends are over: I'll pull an item from my wardrobe, then challenge a friend to complete the outfit. It's fun to see what someone else would put together, with fresh eyes!

It doesn't "feel weird" because Gen Xers and older grew up that way. If we really go back and look at our childhood photos, we all had that ugly rust-orange floral couch, maybe an end table or two, and that was basically it. We played outside, so inside toys were minimal. Just because our society says more is normal, doesn't mean it is healthy. Thanks for inspiring me on our family's journey! I love watching your videos and my kids like you the best of all the minimalists.

I blame the trade agreements with the East to make cheap stuff for cheap prices and sell it back to us. Meanwhile we need jobs after they shipped all our manufacturing overseas so we have to create something to do so we over analyze everything and see how we can increase profit margins and trick people in clever new ways to buy more useless junk that makes our lives worse.

I got chills at reading how you gained control when so much is or was outside your ability to control. You found a healthy, empowering, positive way to deal with your loss, grief and pain, and you chose the most healthy way to process at least portion of it. I'd love to hear your best guess at how much this helped you, like percentage wise. Did it impact your ability to continue with things like work or school? I am so impressed, well done, just so well done. I don't know you, but I strangely, sincerely, feel a sense of pride in how you chose and accomplished so much, in such a positive way.

I think that’s why my mother was a borderline, if not full blooded hoarder! It made her feel safe. I begged her to let us help declutter her mess but she would say she was the only one who could do it. My dad passed a couple of years before her and he had become almost as bad. That depends if you count the basement and his shop. Then he was worse. So now I understand why my mom was like that but not sure about my dad.

I LOVE your comment about STUFF giving us FALSE security. I think that might help my husband and I part with more STUFF in our garage! We babysat a friend's toddler the other day and when she came back with her older kids that evening, her oldest said "Wow, I could totally visit here more often and hang out. It's so nice! " Our home is NOT fancy or big and we don't have any Pinterest worthy decor either. Pretty much just our casual furniture and a few pieces of inexpensive watercolor art on our walls that I love. People often say our home is peaceful and spacious and we feel so proud cuz that wasn't always the case. I was the mom who was CONSTANTLY organizing and restacking things in closets and cupboards and countertops when our kids were growing up. I thought I was just messy, but it's so validating now to know that we just had TOO MUCH stuff. We began downsizing in 2018 when I found Dawn in KZfaq. And now we've totally maintained a lifestyle with simple, open spaces and having only what we need and use for 3+ years now. Our family members visit and DEstress here now! No looking back!! Thank you Dawn!!

My dad passed in 2018 and I was helping take care of my mom in another nearby town and we were trying to find a home we could all live in or land to put two separate homes on so I could watch her better. She fell a lot. Plus I was (still am) homeschooling 2 kids. Then Mama passed in 2020 and I ended up so unorganized with stuff. Bringing stuff into my home and my out building. I kept buying large storage cabinets to store things in. Then one day it started to feel like the storage was closing in on me! That’s when I realized I had too much stuff. I needed less stuff. Less storage. I sold 4 72” high storage cabinets. Plus a lot of other stuff. Oh yeah. We had some remodeling during the time period between 2019 to 2021. So things had been moved around to accommodate construction stuff. But after I realized I had too much stuff and began decluttering, I found Dawn, and she is such an inspiration! She gives me the encouragement I need to keep going and not second guess myself. I have two large boxes of pictures out in my building to go thru. Most of them I probably don’t know the people in them as they belonged to my mom. So this winter when it’s too cold to be outside I can bring them in the house and sort thru. I won’t feel guilty throwing out pictures of folks no one knows anymore. Am I horrible for planning to throw out pictures no one knows? My aunt already went thru them with me last year. I couldn’t part with any then except for what she took.
@kelseyd4196
@kelseyd4196 Жыл бұрын
@@ritadyer9295 I think going thru photos inside while it's too cold to work outside is a great idea! And since you gave your Aunt the opportunity to look thru all the photos and take the ones that were meaningful to her, I think parting with the ones of people you don't even recognize is a totally valid thing to do. Maybe you'll find some photos in there that'll spark some great memories of growing up for you that you can tell your kids? Even stories your mom told YOU of her childhood! Keeping her memory alive by sharing those stories. You've had a lot on your plate these last few years. Good for you to be working so hard! Getting rid of those cabinets so you couldn't use them to store all that extra stuff was really smart. Haha, doesn't Dawn always say, "Things that hold stuff--will hold stuff!" Took me a while to let open, empty spaces STAY empty. Now it feels great! Man, what a great gift you're giving your children. Teaching them how to live this way and knowing what to let go. It'll really help them with stress management in their adulthood. And we can all use less stress, right? Thanks for sharing! Your story is inspiring! 😊

I worked in retail for years and you are spot on. Every season we would get a detailed map from corporate of how we were to display new merchandise. It would detail exactly which items to display, specifics on where it goes in the store, and how to arrange them. There would also be posters and sometimes decorations to go with the display. All this is carefully planned and mapped out by advertising and marketing companies to know how best to attract customers and get them to feel they need those items. Bath & body works actually does this on the first Sunday of EVWR MONTH! I was on the team that would rotate and redecorate the entire store from 10pm-4am. It was crazy the amount of marketing signs and detail maps of every single table as to how it was supposed to be set up.

My personal decluttering journey came to a screeching halt about 2 weeks ago when I got a call that my mother was in hospital with multiple broken joints. I rushed to their home in another part of the country and have been living there ever since. Initially to take care of my terminally ill father and later taking care of both my parents in hospital (dad was hospitalised as well). Luckily my parents have their house pretty well paired down (except for the attic and shed 😉), so it's been pretty easy to find my way and I will have enough space for their walking aids, wheelchairs, oxygen supply and even two hospital beds when they come home. I'm very, very thankful for that. They now both can come home, my mom to recover, my dad to die peacefully.

My kids have too many coats. I need to get rid of some of them. I’ve always bought them several of those lightweight Osh Kosh jackets at the beginning of fall every year in addition to a heavy coat for those days it’s really cold. Then they still refuse to wear them. Last year I had to buy two coats because I couldn’t find the 4 in 1 coats I usually get. So they each have 2 decent heavier jackets. (One a little lighter than the other one). I always felt like they needed extra coats in case one got dirty or they got sick on one. Most of the time they refuse to wear a heavy jacket even when it is cold. I alway buy snowsuits, just in case we get enough snow to play in. My son pitched a fit when I made him wear one last year. We are lucky if we get one decent snow here. But in the back of my mind I’m always thinking if I don’t get the stuff we will have a super cold snowy winter. But the kids are brainwashed now thinking they need so many coats and don’t want to let go of any of them! Not sure where to donate them to but I will find somewhere. Thanks!

Wow, I needed those words. I needed to hear if you have clutter , it’s not because your lazy it’s because you have to much inventory. Another thing I have committed to is simplifying my cleaning supplies and personal care items. We buy one type of toothpaste, one type of shampoo/body soap, one type of floor cleaner, one type of disinfectant, one type of hand soap, bar keepers, sponges, etc. I used to always go for sale items and fill my cabinets like crazy. One of my favorite “Retail defenses” is to CARRY everything I need, no Baskets! No CARTS. I use my hands to tell me that I have everything I need. If I can’t carry it, then I have a reason that I need to think about it. Or, since checkout is usually quick, I am welcome to come back after I put the items I bought into my car. I sit behind the wheel and reflect if I needed that item, and if I did, I can walk back in. A mindfulness pause. Sometimes I think about it longer, or drive home and commend myself for sticking to my list.

We live in the country and don’t have trash service. BUT we do have a dump trailer we converted into a closed dumpster (to keep the bears out) and it’s SO EASY to be able to just throw things away. Broken toys, broken furniture (did I mention I have six kids 10 and under?) and anything else that just needs to GO AWAY is easily disposed of quickly and before anyone can decide they’re going to miss that toy and cobble it together with scotch tape. We also loan the trailer to friends when they move. Not to move items, but to throw things away. Haha! So easy to get rid of things when you don’t have to go all the way to the dump 10 times.

First thing we were told was not to stand up or even think of hanging out of or getting out of the vehicle! The trip was truly AMAZING!! De-cluttering takes such a long time, it can be discouraging at times. I know, one day at a time, and eventually my house will be rid of all the unnecessary items! It's very difficult when you are the only member of the household that is de-cluttering at somewhat of a steady rate!!!! I have decided that I DO NOT NEED ANYTHING so I have stopped buying "stuff"!
