When i first started out i though: "Why use so many room mics?". Well... 1. Lenght - Direct mics sound punchy but it's a really short sound, room mics extend the sustain of the shells. 2. Dimension - They fill out this super cool space in the background and edges of the speakers that if you don't use rooms, you don't even know it exist. 3. Glue - It melds all of the drum sounds into a coherent unit (all for one and one for all!)

Kohlekeller Studio Yeah, I usually have them a bit lower (about waist hight) I do run into some problems sometimes when there’s a crash in the middle of the stereo field. I get this weird cymbal swooshing sound going from left to right and back. I asked Kurt Ballou from Godcity/Converge if he had experienced that and he said yes, in some (smaller) rooms when there’s too much sound coming back into the mic from the rear. He suggested setting up some baffle/absorber behind the mic which is what I’ll try the next time I have this issue 😊

Very nice! Thx for the video Kristian! I wonder what you think about putting the phases of the tracks closer to the kick or snare? I mean, do you usually do that? Getting overhead or room signals closer or "in phase" of the the snare signal by shifting the recorded tracks 'back' on the snare? When I do it it sounds like even more impact, but on the other hand it is not that easy, takes a lot of time and I am never sure if it is worth the effort. I know: what sounds good is good. I am asking more in a theoretical way. Hope that I am asking in an understandable way? 😅

The tom is tuned too low for its size. Just a half step higher could make it go away. Could also be that one or more of the lugs came loose.
@djentlover
@djentlover 3 жыл бұрын
Floor toms are super sensitive to tension changes. The tiniest loosening can drop the tuning completely below the usable range. It's important to check the tuning before each take, despite how ergonomically horrible the bottom heads are to tune. This problem goes away with higher tunings but who wants that kind of floor tom sound?

Can I have any luck placing speakers into a lively room and playing back the drum recording on then, to capture a room ambience sound with a pair of microphones, which I then mix in applying the techniques you suggested? @edukacja2485

I love your videos, but it's so annoying when you call ProMB the dynamic eq... This is actually a multiband dynamics processor. I intentionally didn't call it multiband compressor because it can do much more than regular compression, but THIS IS NOT A DYNAMIC EQ. What's the difference? Multiband dynamics use crossover filters between each band, so they introduce fixed phase shift. There's no such thing in dynamic eq which only introduces phase shift when a band is being boosted or cut.
@KohleAudioKult
@KohleAudioKult 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! I might be more of the lumberjack type of guy, but if I dial in an eq band that somehow reacts to the dynamic behavior of the input signal, it becomes a dynamic Eq to my simple mind, no matter if there’s a static phase shift or not.
