In this video, we dive into the Jeep Wrangler caster and adjust the lower control arms (LCAs) to try to get it to drive straighter on the freeway. There are 3 other videos below on my journey to get this 2020 Jeep Wrangler JLUR to drive straight!

Part 1 covers more of the basic diagnosis.
Part 2 covers history of my Jeeps Deathwobble and steering wander
Part 3 covers the most recent stuff ive done including drag link, pitman arm and multiple alignments

Adjusting the lowers could be easier (please add a second adjustable rod end at the other side Metalcloak !)
1. loosen the jam nuts
2.take off arms
3.adjust 1-2 turns
4.measure caster
5.adjust again if needed
6.reinstall
7.torque to spec
8. Test drive
(same process for UCAs, but you would be bringing them in, not out)
Don't do these repairs if you are going to manage to hurt yourself, hurt your jeep, just take it to a shop. It's easy to do, but please this is for informational purposes only, wrench at your own risk.

Coming soon a video on the hellwig rear sway bar install
Also going to add even more caster and adjust out even more rear thrust.

Nice video! Like the jack stand trick, I found my bottle jack can be handy for supporting the wrench and removal is much easier since you let it down and release the tension.

I thought the lower arms center the axle where it needs to be on the wheelbase/wheel well and the upper arms adjust the caster?
@blondejon83
@blondejon83 4 ай бұрын
It will change your wheelbase by the 1/8” or 3/16 of adjustment. But its an easy way to adjust caster. You can also adjust your ucas if you dont want to touch your wheel base. This is much faster and easier than adjusting the ucas. I normally do the lcas for caster myself. Ive never noticed a 1/8-1/4” change in wheelbase as far as driveability over the last 20 years + of doing this.

Rancho UCAs are double adjustable. But the jam nuts are really hard to get to without a crows foot for your torque wrench.

I put the rancho x lander 3” kit on my gladiator yesterday. Adjusted the control arms to what they said in the kit. I will say it has zero wandering and tracks dead straight. Caster seems to be in spec with my rough angle/ degree finder app. I really don’t want to mess with it lol. One issue though. My passenger spring is bowed back. Driver side is perfectly straight. Thinking about twisting the coil. Seems like an isolator issue? Thoughts?

I did buy some lower coil isolators from metalcloak, it seems like they helped with the bowing. Its worth a shot if you dont have your arms out of adjustment side to side.

Nice video, I don't have adjustable uppers but I bought some MetalCloak front LCAs. My initial caster (using a digital angle finder above the ball joints flat surface) was 4.6 D and 3.4 P side. I noticed that even adjusting one side changed the caster on the other side. At the end my driver side caster was 6.2 and my Passenger was 5.2. My jeep was pulling heavily to the left before getting the LCA and now it still pulls to the left but not as bad. Should I try to keep both passenger and driver caster as equal as possible? I was also thinking about making my passenger side caster bigger than my driver side to see if it stops pulling to the left. Both axles are centered and toe out is within 1/8th of an inch.

if they are equally adjusted , and its pulling left, id try two things - first id rotate the tires. if it still pulls driver, id give one extra turn on the driver lower and see if the pull goes away.

use the spot on the diff I use, Ive verified on a alignment rack when I'm at 90* there, that I'm at 6* of caster, so going back 1* is 7*, going forward is 5*. Also, get an alignment and check your rear thrust angle too, make sure the rear axle is square with the body too, you may need adjustable rear LCAs to get the rear square too.

@@blondejon83 My bad I meant that it pulls to the right, passenger side. I would be worried if it pulled to the side with more caster lol. I have an angle finder like yours and when I place it in that spot it marks like 38 degrees which tells me something isn't right. That why I use the ball joints because it gives me reasonable measurements.

Ok if its pulling passenger if give it one more full turn on the pass side lower and see what it does. If it gets better but not 100% maybe try one more turn. But id also do a tire rotation to see if the pull dissapears. These jls need alot of caster too to drive straight from my experience.

First of all. You are spot on. I've done the same exact thing. Wish i saw this video before the headache. With 8° caster, how is your pinion angle? Does your jeep vibrate in 4wd?
@blondejon83
@blondejon83 7 ай бұрын
Pinion angle is good enough. I dont have any vibes in 4wd with about 7.8* of caster and a 2.5” lift. We also did swap in a dual cardan front DS and got rid of the rzeppa style CV stock front DS recently and havent put it in 4wd since we did that. But with the stock ds no vibes

Thanks for the great video. In the video, regarding the angles, you said you know to subtract the 0.2 but you don't really say why. Also, using the angle finder that way do you need to account for the garage floor maybe having some slope or is that why you subtracted the point 2? Also, I can't follow your math how you get from the 89.2 on the angle finder to saying that equates to 6.8 on the rack. If there is six degrees built-in wouldn't that equate to either 6.0 or 6.2? Thanks again!!
@blondejon83

.2 is the delta between the measurement on the alignment rack and what i measured myself at home. I did say thats the reason why in the vid too. As for garage floor, always account for it. Mine was poured flat, its zero, intentionally . So i dont need to add it or subtract it.
@blondejon83
@blondejon83 7 ай бұрын
90* equates to 6* caster, so when tilted forward its less caster, you subtract, when tilted back, you add to the caster, since its more caster. I verified on the alignment rack that 90* on the diff spreader is 6* of caster

If the jeep pulls right swap tires side for side if it still pulls right increase caster on right side 1 turn test drive keep it simple

Can you tell me how this angle is converted? I don't really get it.
@blondejon83
@blondejon83 8 ай бұрын
Caster is the angle of the line thats perpendicular to the line that goes through the center of your upper and lower ball joints. I verified the flat part of the diff at 0 coincides with 6* of caster while on an alignment rack. Caster needs to be between 6-8* on these. Im around 7.4*
