If you have been following this video series, you should now have an effective study system/structure in place and an understanding of how your memory works, good study attitudes, a good working environment, and an established daily routine.
But what do you actually do when you sit down to study mathematics? There are four ways in which you can study mathematics and this video describes the third method: refining your habits (setting out or work and working procedures) to minimise your risk of making careless errors.
A free PDF summary of the four methods is available at crystalclearmaths.com/wp-conte....

i've always considered maths to be my best subject but i've always had problems with careless mistakes especially under stressful conditions.usually i've done alright but i came last in my class for the test i just did and it makes me feel like i should just give up on maths.

+eLLE LMizgeek I'm so sorry to hear that, Elle. It must be incredibly frustrating! I must admit that I didn't suffer as badly as you but, early in my high school career, I sometimes lost as much as 25-30% due to carelessness. I simply rushed so much (and I was always stressed). What I shared in this video are mainly ideas that I discovered in middle high school ... about being prepared, developing (and practising) good habits, setting work out clearly and with good diagrams. I also discovered some principles for preparing for exams in order to be less stressed as well. You will find a summary of those principles in my "How to Study" playlist (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z9x_ibVjlZaqmo0.html). Just watch videos number 18 (Seven Ways to Prepare for Your Exams) and 19 (Seven Hints for Sitting for a Mathematics Exam). I hope these ideas help you and that you can make a big 'comeback' in mathematics. If it used to be your best subject, you obviously have the ability to do well with it. It is a shame that you do not live nearby so you could come around for a little help. Please let me know how you go with some of these new ideas.

+eLLE LMizgeek I hope you can turn things around, Elle ... but lack of preparation in junior school does come back to bite hard! With determination, you can do it. Be prepared to ask for help. A helpful friend, teacher or tutor can save you many hours of fumbling around on your own. Once you understand something, however, be sure to practise it enough so that you don't forget it. You may find that my "Four Ways to Study Mathematics" and my "How to Set up a Study System" will help. Feel free to send me a private message if you need more specific help. Best wishes to you ... and please let me know how you get on with your studies.

I just want to say, thank you so much for this video. I have a math test tomorrow, (im in grade 10) and I keep losing marks from careless mistakes. Last test, I only got an 80 to realize that 99% of lost marks were from carelessness, and it’s absolutely driving me crazy. For this test, im really nervous because I’ve always been making calculation errors on ALL my homework and almost any calculation. It’s not that I don’t know the concept, indeed I know it very well. However, calculation errors such as multiplying the wrong number, writing the wrong number and subtracting when you’re suppose to be adding happens all the time. I’m so scared, I don’t know how to prevent it and I’ve tried many ways.. I think I also lose marks from calculation errors just because I try to do mental math that I’m not good at.. im going to try to write everything out, like the advice you gave. Thanks a lot for the advice, and I really hope I get rid of the bad habits. Do you have some other advice for me? I’m trying my best to still love math (I always did) but it’s been hard.. especially when you keep making the same mistakes over and over again.. hope you have a great day. (PS. I wish I found this video earlier lol)

Thank you for your lovely feedback, cat. I hope you did ok in your test! It is really frustrating when you have studied hard and know the work and know that you should get 99% (or more) and deserve such a mark ... and then carelessly throw marks away. I cannot remember how much I shared in the video, but I did that a lot during my first two years of high school. I feel for you! I am glad that you have decided to use smaller steps and, therefore, write a few extra lines in your solutions. That should make a difference. I wish I could see your work and consult with you face-to-face, but that is not possible. It concerns me that you are making so many errors in your homework as well. That should not be happening? Are you getting sufficient sleep? What are your stress levels like? Are you diabetic? Are you taking drugs/medication of any kind? All of these thinks can influence your brain function in such a way. Fixing the sleep issue is potentially 'easier.' Get more regular and longer and better quality sleep. Think of location, timing, diet, medication and lifestyle. Stress levels are more difficult as there can be medical and/or historical and/or environmental reasons for stress. If this is a factor for you, it may be a good idea to spend 15-30 minutes on easier material first that you feel quite comfortable with as it takes about 20-30 minutes for your body to adequately lower the concentration of stress hormones in your blood. That may be some other subject or some other mathematics material (drill work or summaries, for example) ... something quite methodical and low stress ... and then tackle the more difficult work. Anyway, I hope some of this helps and that you can get those higher marks that you seem to deserve! Best wishes to you from Australia!

@@CrystalClearMaths thank you so much for replying to every comment, it means you value your viewers :) thanks for your comment as well, it means a lot to me. like you suggested, it could be that my stress and anxiety is coming at me when I do math. Due to the last test’s mark being so unexpected, I was very stressed and upset with it to a point where I cried because I’ve never gotten this low (kinda low to my standards) ever in highschool. I was so concerned and perhaps stressed out with everything just because I wanted to get back to the 90s. Maybe the anxiety and stress caused me to make these mistakes. I don’t know how to overcome the stress; my parents tells me not to stress too much but it’s like it’s subconscious.. it might just be me though, since I value marks as how I am as a student

@@cat-pf1cp You are very kind and thoughtful with your comments, cat. Stress can be such a huge factor. I remember one disastrous test that I had in Year 8 (High School) in which I was expecting 99-100% and received something like 70%. I had been so stressed and rushed my test so much that I lost about 30% due to carelessness! I even managed to miss the last page of questions (by not turning the page over and checking). I left off units and remember failing to add the parts of a composite area problem, and more. It was that test that set me to thinking about this whole issue of how to reduce careless errors. I didn't need to study any harder/more as I knew all the work quite thoroughly. What I realised is that I had to change HOW I studied and HOW I managed my exams. This video is, in large part, a result of that experience. I hope that it helps galvanise you to reevaluating your training methods ... and that your marks will leap (as they did for me). Best wishes. Edit: My edit was to correct a spelling mistake :P

Thank you so much for your videos and your channel, I really appreciate having this as a resource as I tackle calculus 1 in an 8 week course. Add to that a case of dyslexia and a physical disability and I have the deck stacked against me. I won't give up, and am grateful for your tools. If I make it through this summer I will be taking calculus 2 come fall; keep the insight coming!!! If you tube would've existed when I was in high school I may have done better! I am very particular about writing things down in the same order and within the same scaffolding each time so I can go backwards should I need to track down an error. I do have issues with memory, so much so that I have broken it down into a completely developed analogy. I will overcome and you will be part of my victory :)

This is important. I love science but I also have attention problems and have had unexplainable issues with maths. I went back to absolute basics and it turns out I fail around 50% (no exaggeration) because I forget to switch signs or multiply a component in a parenthesis due to moving on to quick. None because I'm bad at math. Was a great discovery. And I'll look at these habits.

@CrystalClearMaths
@CrystalClearMaths 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Celluloid. Thank you for your enquiry. Without seeing your work, it is difficult to make recommendations. Some of the things that I mention may not apply to you. ● Lining up = signs and working down the page allows you to copy terms directly below their previous position. ● Writing more lines of work and reducing the amount of calculation done in each step reduces the amount that your brain has to do while under exam stress. ● Substituting using parentheses helps avoid mistakes using negative signs, e.g. (-3)²(-4)(-2) instead of -3²x-4x-2 I realise that these are simple suggestions but, without seeing your work, I cannot easily suggest more. I recommend that you spend some of your study time studying each of your 'careless' solutions and ask yourself what procedures or habits you could develop that may reduce the frequency with which you make those errors. Best wishes for your studies!

I'm glad that you liked the video. Thank you, too, for mentioning the captions. I am glad that they help. Unfortunately, it takes an extraordinary amount of time to prepare (and synchronise) them. I am not a touch typist, so it takes me an hour or two to create the captions for even an 8 minute video like this one. To create captions for the remaining videos that I have posted would take me hundreds of hours, so I have discontinued the practice until I can come up with a more efficient way of preparing them. I am sorry.

Hi Graeme, What you said is absolutely right, I have been tutoring Mathematics subject to students in my area and in my observation though they are good in understanding the concepts when they actually work it out using pen and paper they seem to make silly mistakes quite often and loose valuable marks. I would say mere carelessness puts them to bottom ranking. Some of my suggestions 1. When they grow up they study so many things and when they reach higher grade , say like from 9th class to college level they seem to forget the basics and often make mistakes. Students has to realise that have not done well in each problems until they give the clear and correct answers. Often they get stuck with some crucial steps in the problems and since they are not strong enough in basics they create their own answers. So they need to tighten their basics at whatever level they study. 2. Some students are not putting hard work while studying some difficult topics and hence they decide that they will loose marks in that topic . In this regard I would suggest them to keep on referencing the difficult topics by reading good books, videos and by clearing doubts from good teachers till they master that topic. 3.As you said they have to stop working out the problems in mind, they had to really work out using pen and paper and that will give them the confidence that they have really worked out nicely rather than merely giving answers orally. 4.Due to poor writing also some students loose valuable marks in their exams, so clear writing of the solutions is also mandatory. They should develop their handwriting skills by rigorous practice , maybe they should check with their seniors or their teachers/tutors if everything is clear and if they need to improve their writing skills. They should practice where to put brackets, spacing of the letters , symbols , equations etc., Good handwriting will in fact make them feel confident and develop faster writing. 5.Self-motivation plays key role at time when they score less in their exams. If they have good approach and hard work they can definitely score high in their exams. regards Kumaresh.

Hello Kumaresh. It is good to chat again! I did not realise that you tutor students in mathematics. From your comments, it is apparent (and encouraging to learn) that we have come to the same conclusions. On paper, I am very careful about setting work out ... by using headings, leaving blank lines, lining up = signs, placing vincula (fraction bars) on lines, and spacing equations out across a page. As my students adopt these measures/habits, they testify that their understanding and performance/results improve. Thank you for sharing this. I hope your message encourages students to do these things. Kind regards, Graeme

Thank you very much! I'm majoring in Mathematics and I won't have the luxury of making silly mistakes anymore. I love Math, but these random occurrences haunt me. I graduated from a high school in a country that shamed students that wrote too much, so we were forced to do all the basic arithmetic steps (+,-,/,X) mentally, even when they were kinda lengthy for only high school (like 347 x 57, for example). I cannot deny that it made me a lot faster and more efficient, but it came with extremely bad habits and A LOT of mistakes in my college exams.

Hey! Thank you for your video. I'm currently preparing to take a standardized test and I often see myself at a crossroads. I either have to write less lines of work and reach the solution as fast as I can, at the expense of possibly getting the answer wrong, or taking the time to answer and writing as much as I feel comfortable with, but at the expense of possibly not even having the time to address all the questions in the exam. What would you recommend in this situation?
@CrystalClearMaths
@CrystalClearMaths 2 жыл бұрын
What a great question, Raquel! You have beautifully described the tension that we are faced with during exams ... the need to show all (small) steps in order to avoid careless mistakes balanced against the need for speed. The exams that we sit for are invariably timed, which means that they are a race. My suggestion is that you train as you would for any race. That is, some of your training will be building strength and stamina (practising a wide variety of different and difficult questions), while some will be sprint and interval training. Some portion of your home work and study time should be racing against the clock. This work is normally done on simpler, drill-type questions. If I had to answer 20 questions for home work, I used to time myself when answering the first two and then estimate how long it would take to complete the remaining 18 questions. This meant that I was very much more focused on my work and completed it more rapidly than I would have otherwise. It also meant that I remembered the work more thoroughly, because I was so focused on it. But, one of the great benefits is that I was forced to learn what I needed to show paper to adequately answer the question while working at speed ... and then to practise that skill. In time, I found that I was not only accurate, but I was fast! Some of my peers commented that I never stopped writing during tests (as I never had to stop more than a few seconds to think what to do). In my first state-wide test, I remember taking just 40 minutes to fully complete the two hour paper. By that stage, I had been conscientiously training for speed (in the manner that I described above) for two years ... and I was astonished at how rapidly I had worked through the material. I feel for you, aero, and remember when I was in a similar position. I used to rush so much that, in one exam, I lost nearly 30% due to carelessness! I even managed not to turn over the last page and missed a whole page of questions :P It really does help to work on your habits ... how you set your work out, how many steps you take, what you actually write on the page and what you do in your head, your procedures (read the question, answer the question, reread the question to check that you have fully answered it before moving to the next question), etc. Work through your last test and examine each question where you failed to earn full marks ... and see if you can think of a better procedure or way of setting your work out on a page (or whatever), and then practise your new procedure until it becomes a habit. I am sure that you will find, step-by-step, that this will help. Very best wishes to you ... for your success! Kind regards from Australia.

Hi, I found your tips really useful but in particular, I have a maths test next week and I have been losing marks for careless errors. I try and do intense small working and re-read the question again and again etc but I end up running out of time. Have you got a solution, thanks.

I am glad that the tips were useful, MyManUbi, but it is sad that you run out of time. The primary way to build up speed is to spend part of your study time doing revision/drill work with basic material ... i.e. basic skills. Even if you are working at an advanced level, it is helpful to spend a proportion of your study time factorising quadratic expressions, differentiating, integrating, solving linear equations, proving trigonometric identities, etc. (I am not sure what level of mathematics you are studying). Each of these can be practised with a quick burst of 5-15 minutes or so. Every so often, spending a sustained amount of time on these basic skills (building up stamina as well) is a good thing to do, too. Sometimes, we neglect these skills and, when under pressure, make careless errors when using them. This is one of the reasons that a concert pianist still practises their scales and that a top basketballer will still practise dribbling and simple layup shots, etc. ... so that those skills will not fail them during their "performance." I hope that helps a bit. Please let me know how you go with your test next week! Kind regards, Graeme

Being consistent is really good, Clashermon. If it is errors that make all the difference, then you basically know all the work! I hope this video has given you pointers on how to develop good habits to reduce your error rate during tests. It would be wonderful to see you consistently getting A+ results! I would recommend setting time aside regularly to look at how you answer questions and how you set out and think through your work. This is obviously where your need is. Please let me know if it makes a difference for you. Best wishes for your studies!

+DoesItLookLikeIGiveAF**k What can I say, friend? I am very impressed that you already do all of these things (and even moreso that you thought them up for yourself), but it is really sad that you keep messing up those 1-3 questions. I can feel your frustration. Just between you and me, it was not often that I earned 100% in major tests either. I was far from perfect ... but my results were much better towards the end of my high school than they were at the beginning. My average results were much closer to that goal (100%) and I came first by an increasingly larger margin. So, may I encourage you to persist? It can take time. The three biggest things for me were to practise hard to understand everything, to practise hard to build up speed, and to practise hard to establish solid and reliable habits. Eventually, these all "paid off." If we were face-to-face and discussing your frustrations, I would ask if you were overly tired when you sat for your exams, or if you felt particularly stressed, or if you had eaten well (so that your blood sugar levels were good for the duration of the examination). Hopefully, some of the things I share in this video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/na2blcmKndvSfHU.html) will help you. I like the fact that you strive to excel. Best wishes to you, and please let me know how you get on. I would love to know!

Hm, so in essence attempt to reduce automaticity in solving problems(the tendency to allow your brain to do automatic/practiced calculations) and attempt to tediously think through problems instead. When practicing mathematics there comes a point in which you can solve the problem without even thinking(at least in the more elementary classes) such a habit is very error-prone in exchange for its speed. Perhaps conceiving of each problem as one in which you need to provide a decently concise proof is a useful strategy, instead of a problem which demands one numerical answer(regardless of the steps it takes to get there).
@CrystalClearMaths
@CrystalClearMaths Жыл бұрын
Not so much reducing 'automaticity' as developing habits of setting work out clearly (structure and sequence) and in sufficiently small steps so that each automatic process/step has an exceedingly low chance of introducing error. We still wish to avoid tedium and want to use automatic habits and skills, but develop them in such a way as to reduce the risk of careless errors. Because we all think and write differently, it is for each student to work out the detail that works best for them.

It is difficult, Solomon. All students make some careless mistakes but it is the better students who really suffer with them ... largely because they want to do well and because almost ALL their mistakes are careless ones (because they know their work). It is a bit like competitions at the Olympic Games. Often, there are two or more competitors who are capable of winning gold, but the medal goes to the one who makes the fewest mistakes on the day! If you are one of the more able students (and I suspect that you are), you will likely have a tendency to rush your work. I certainly did! The main cures are these: 1. Always set your work out clearly and show all steps. Don't jump steps and try to do 2-3 things at once. Rely on writing quickly and putting everything on paper. But clear setting out is vital, and you need to experiment with each topic and question type to see what kind of setting out is the clearest and most logical to you. Setting out includes where you place diagrams, how you line up = signs, etc. 2. Get in the habit of always checking for the accuracy of your answers and for the correct units before you consider your answer is complete. 3. You should always re-read each question AFTER you have answered it to ensure that you have answered it properly and completely. This is an excellent habit to develop and you should do this with all your home work and revision as well ... i.e. always do this. 4. Reduce your stress before exams by preparing your materials the night before, sleeping/exercising/eating well, and avoiding talking with other students on the day of the exam. Stress is a major cause of 'blanking out' and/or making careless mistakes. There are other things that can help but, if you have prepared well, these four would be the major ones. Please stay in touch and let me know how you go! Best wishes to you from Australia :-)

+Mansoor Saleem Hello Mansoor, I try to respond to all of the comments that are left on my videos ... especially if questions are asked of me. At the moment, I do not have more suggestions for avoiding mistakes in exams than the ones in this video (about developing and practising good habits) ... and how to sit for mathematics exams (see kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j66RhK-p37u1qWw.html and kzfaq.info/get/bejne/na2blcmKndvSfHU.html). The latter two videos have a lot to do with managing stress. Even with good habits and good stress management, however, you may still make mistakes. We are all human after all, and even top athletes make errors. Any errors that you make should, however, be far fewer and less serious if you have put these principles into practice. Please let me know how you fare.

I feel for you, Holent. We always will make silly mistakes. That is (sadly) part of being human. This video explains the principle that we can REDUCE the number of mistakes we make by developing new and better habits ... about how we think, how we approach different kinds of problems, how we set our work out on the page, the order in which we proceed through a problem, etc. New and better habits are formed by repetition and practice of BETTER methods. As I am sure you may have heard, it is not that 'practice makes perfect,' but rather that 'perfect practice makes perfect.' You still have time to work on some areas of your mathematics. If you can think of ways to improve your performance in some topics, you will benefit from practising those methods. My video should give you some ideas. I cannot promise to improve your results by a lot in one month, but they should improve noticeably in that time. This is a lifetime habit that is worth cultivating ... learning good or better methods for doing something and then practising those methods. I certainly wish you the best and would love some feedback from you, as to whether your month of revision and practise enhances your results (or not). Admittedly, you do not have a lot of time, but it is a LOT better than just having a few days or a week left! Kind regards to you.
