I've always heard the legend of Santiago, but I never knew it was true. They say Santiago once balanced a tire with nothing but a piece of rope, two vices and a hamster wheel. I've even heard that uneven wear patterns will correct themselves out of sheer terror under the cold gaze of Santiago.

Yes it works, there are actually bb's just for tire balancing. I run into them all the time dismounting tires from other shops. The difference between stick-on/rim weights and bb's is that when done right like this the tire essentially balances itself for the life of it, instead of needing a balance every so often. Some even go in through the valve stem(without the core in it of course)

For science, could you run a tire with no weights at several speeds and noting vibration, and then coming back with the beads and making notes at those same speeds what you find? Also, are the wheel bearings holding up in those vehicles? If they run out of balance whenever you are below 30MPH, then you are putting stress on the bearings and races.

@@Zach-im1vu the BBs start balancing over 5 mph. They continually balance the wheel as your driving. The idea is that as you use the tires off-road and lose chunks of rubber the tires are still balanced with the BBs moving around.

This actually can work, but the best is lead shot (for reloading shotshells). The rule of thumb is 1 handful per tire on a normally-driven car (less for tiny cars), 2 handfulls each for pickup truck (30-38") sized tires or aggressively driven car tires. This is especially useful for bias ply tires, which are notorious for shifting balance points. It works similarly in concept to the fluid harmonic balancers used on high performance engines.

I've run Dyna Beads in both my motorcycles for years. I've run my FJR up to 135 MPH and it was smooth as butter. The only issue with the Dyna Beads is installation. A real hassle, but they do work as advertised. After changing out the tires, I saw no trace of wear or damage inside the tire or to the rim.

I had 3 different tire shops try to balance my 35" MTR's and none of them could get them to balance so I tried Airsoft BB's which actually made them worse than no balancing at all. The funny thing is I've always used balancing beads in my motorcycles and they worked great there. I suspect the airsoft BB's aren't as dense as the actual small balancing beads I had used in my bikes and think it probably would have worked with them. I ended up buying a bubble balancer and stick on weights, balancing them myself and now I can run 75 smooth as silk.

Works fine smooth roads, rough roads not so much. 84 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburban balanced tires with that type of material 33/12.50-16.5 BFG all terrain, worked well when road smooth, when it was a little rough truck would experience death wobble occasionally. Balanced tires with normal weights and never had death wobble again. Will only use regular weights now.

you can also use antifreeze. Just make sure when you measure you don't use fluid ounces because they are completely different than physical weight of ounces. Make sure to not use straight antifreeze as that can freeze at higher temperature than mixed antifreeze

interesting I have seen guys also use 4-6oz of sand in the tires to balance them. The only thing with that is if you want to check tire pressure you have to make sure you are close to a air compressor cause the sand sometimes gets stuck in the valve stem and it starts to leak. This method sounds like a good idea. Especially if one of BBS get stuck in the valve stem then it would most likely prevent a leak.

I've ran airsoft bb's in my bias ply 36's on the street and offroad for over 4 years now. Still works great. I also run them on my truck tires. No issues at all. I used the weight chart from dynabeads. I did have to add some to the bias plys as they did not want to balance with the recomended weight. Mine start to balance up before 30 miles per hour. I usually can feel the balance pick up and go away at about 10 to 15 miles per hour.

if I may I have one thing to share that might be helpful to some people here. I ran ceramic beads in my Goldwing motorcycle tires for years, they do work and they do an excellent job at that. However, my friends who tried plastic beads reported that after 5K miles the plastic beads started lumping/melting together due to the high heat generated inside the tire caused by fast rotation and the beads bumping into each other. With that said, that might not apply to vehicle tires due to their larger size and more room to dissipate heat, but the heat and fast rotation factors are still involved in the process. I am about to try those ceramic beads once in my 4runner's AT265/65/17 tires soon.

a little off topic, but had you gone with a 17 in wheel on your GMT 800 (00-06/07 classic 1500) Tahoe you could have upgraded the front breaks to the GMT 900 (07-13 1500) style (you need to swap the caliper, caliper bracket, and rotors) to get a significant brake upgrade. Now back on topic. I got some beads to run in my XJ, but have always been leary to run them due to popping a bead when wheeling, and messing up the ratio. Also I'm only on 32"s, and was told by my little local guy that there would be a good chance they wouldn't work to well because of my tire size being on the smaller size. He said he sells them, but just didn't think I'd be happy with them.

It's legit. I drive tractor-trailer, and the tire shops always use some sort of beads to balance the steer tires. I don't think they're actual BBs, though. They come in a little bag, the tire tech just throws the entire sealed bag into the tire. It breaks open on it's own and balances the tires perfectly. Never had a problem with one.

I have had zero luck doing this on my TJ with 33's. (MTR's at the time) I used real BB's (almost all forums say to use a shot glass worth, so I did) Steering was extremely difficult to say the least. They were noisy when going slow speeds, including starting up from a light and coming to a slow down. At speeds, they didn't seem to spread out as I anticipated but instead clumped up and created a "whump, whump, whump" feel. I didn't take it on the E-way as I didn't think it would be a wise move. Fastest I got was around 50 mph. Hope you have better luck than I did.

Here is a video of my results: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n56crMWZqJm5Zp8.html I put 3 ounces of Airsoft BBs in each tire of my Prius using a "harbor Freight" style tire changer tool and went on a 2,400 mile road trip with mostly highway miles and got a bald spot on one of the tires and vibration after an initially "smooth as glass" ride. It was a set of four touring tires that still had a few miles left on them so I figure it would make for an inexpensive experiment. I suspect the tire with the bald spot was on the rim that I pulled a fairly large lead tire weight from! This may have stressed the suspension on the front passenger wheel since it is making a new intermittent rattling sound after returning from the road trip. Afterwards, I went to the tire store in town and replaced the touring style tires with snow tires and the ride is smooth again.

I paid $3400 for this one, owned it for 5 years and sold it for $4000...and even with the extra $600, I regret selling it. It's the only jeep I've ever sold!

I think they mean metal bbs, not plastic ones. I think plastic ones are probably too lightweight to do anything in a tire.

I've never balanced tyres mainly because it's worn out items on the vehicle that causes problems. never had a faintest Wheel wobble yet. the only time a tyre is bad is usually very cheap remoulds ve had a few mainly purchased on a vehicle. I don't even have problems with cheap tyres. I think it was invented to make a bit more money from tyre fitting.

Justin Middleton just because you haven't encountered it doesn't mean it's made up. wheel imbalances are a very common issue on larger tires. small tires it's just not nearly as noticeable. most all balancing is pointless under around 45mph though.

LOL..... you're in the youtube void.... Time wasting should feel familiar. This actually is an age old solution. You can ask most older generation farmers about if it works.

Balancing beads or BBs are not rocket science they are simple physics. They do work, I have run balancing beads for nearly 40 years and have not had to use any wheel weights. I have never tried the Airsoft BBs I use Dyna Beads which are tiny ceramic beads.

out our shop we use pre packed actual wheel balance beads....almost like glass sand but a tinny bit larger. they seem to work better in larger tires 35×12.50r18 for example. and again work great in the even larger 11r22.5/24.5 tires.I like how these are larger beads then the stuff we use. seems like a better idea. We have the old trucker that comes in and wants us to put antifreeze in his tire. witch we decline of course.
