Jeff Foster talks about the struggle to be “at peace” versus the natural peace that we are, the deeper spiritual peace that actually embraces even our moments of “lack of peace”, loves and blesses any disturbance in our bodies, allows us to be EXACTLY as we are...

I should not be in peace, but I WANT TO BE AT PEACE, because anguish is very tiring, it's depleting! I have been not resisting my anguish but I feel handling it makes my body weak, it hurts, it cuts my breath, it feels so heavy....and for me it's not a matter of "being spiritual" but a matter of being able to handle life, handle my work, my children... it is very difficult to live in internal conflict, it complicates everything

Those who watch vid's like this may get the feeling that all one has to do is this, or that. and everything will be ok. And what Mr Foster says is true, but one can not "just" let go of stress. And if one tries, and fails, then there's the stress of failure, and that piles on even more stress. Btw stress can be a powerful tool. Pain is the great motivator in our lives. That does not mean that one should go looking for stress, and pain. Not to worry, life will provide that kind of motivation all by it's self. The question is who, or what feels that pain. When it comes to the spiritual the why doesn't really matter, it's the who, or the what. See into this, and one is well on their way. Our true nature is bless, and the clearer we see into it, the happier we will be. Mr Foster is right in saying that if one has one eye on the prize, then one only has one on the path. At least that's what I think he was saying.

Yeah,it's really paradoxical. And maybe that's also why it's so hard to grasp this, peace in the midst of non-peace or non-peace in the midst of fighting non-peace to change it to peace~~ ^^ Thank you Jeff, you really described me well.

I felt even LESS at peace after watching this video!! I find it so frustrating that just because some people use "I want peace" as a way to escape the present moment, that we all seem to get lumped in the same category and diagnosed as "trying to be spiritual" just because we have a desire for peace. Maybe I misheard, but that's how this video made me feel. There's nothing wrong with having desire - of any sort - it is only when we superimpose this desire on the present moment and try to tell the present moment "how it should be" that we run into trouble. Desire IS spirituality too - if "not peace" is an expression of the one indivisible life, then desire for peace is just another expression of that same life too. There IS Nothing else. I'm not going to violently push away my desire for peace just because someone else has diagnosed it as "trying to be spiritual", or "projecting into the future" - if my foot is caught in a bear trap it's not unspiritual for me to want it out, in the future or not - but I can be wise enough to honour my (future) desire in the wide open space that holds the sensations of my present moment reality too. Without bias, preference or judgement. If I see an animal being harmed, if I see a child being abused, if I see the oceans being polluted, if I feel unrest within myself, my desire for a healthier society, healthier me or more peaceful moment is not wrong. My heartfelt empathy and self-love is not me "trying to be spiritual". It is an expression of deep love and care. Yes, I will need to face the sensations that arise here first and foremost and act from a spaciousness that embraces and includes my distaste. Yes, I will need to pursue my vision and inspirations VIA and THROUGH the present moment and the sensations it evokes and remain detached from the outcome, but it doesn't make my inherent empathy-inspired desire wrong. I just feel this point of view, while EXTREMELY helpful for those who beat themselves up with "trying to be spiritual" all the time (and bless you for helping these people out) also creates a more subtle violence for the rest of us, that if we have desires or feel like we want change in any way then this is somehow wrong. I feel suppressed by this perspective. Like this perspective forces me to "stay put", to not want more, to deny my genuine heart callings for change because it is deemed "unspiritual" to be able to accept the present moment completely AND simultaneously desire change. Like these two perspectives are mutually exclusive somehow. Anyhow, just what came up for me. Holding the space for the sensations of frustration this evoked within myself and grateful for the opportunity to see more and with greater subtlety and make peace with my lack of peace around a video about finding peace without acknowledging our desire for peace as peaceful because to make peace with our desire for peace is somehow unspiritual. Lol.

I think the key is to hold all of these concepts lightly and, if possible, playfully. I was just talking about these same topics with others after insight meditation. Getting rid of all desire is not something any of my spiritual guides are saying, even Jeff Foster. I think this is an invitation to set aside your preconceptions, which you think are so essential. Let me give you a practical example. I was in a car ride, and I was agitated. I wanted to calm down (a goal!). I also wanted to be mindful and accepting of the present moment. So, I started doing a series of breathing exercises, to achieve that goal. That was a choice. While I was doing that, i was curious about my sensations without judgment (but accepting judgements that come up as just a thought). You can see how this can end up in an infinite regress of accepting your non-acceptance of your acceptance of your....... At that point, you can just smile, laugh, and realize none of these concepts are absolutes.

He's absolutely right, anything that involves some sort of trying, and being in a different state does not work. People want to apply some sort of technique and they have an expectation of feeling a certain way. It's all pressure and tension that perpetuates the disturbance. You are either 1)Trying to convince yourself that you are in a peaceful state which is self deception, ego and inauthenticity or alternatively, 2) You are having problem with how you're feeling and want to be feeling peaceful, and this shows as depression, apathy, frustration and pain.

He's describing the struggle within, not how to deal with an external emergency. He's describing an explosion that gets more destructive the more we try to run away from it. He's describing someone who is dreaming that their hair is on fire, recommending they stop and wake up.

I disagree at 11:20, Jeff. We do that to children. "There's no reason for you to be upset, you have your toy." "Big boys don't cry"..etc. We're taught it. Then we do it to ourselves....thinking that's the way it's done...thoughts? Otherwise...dead on.
