I finally get around to brewing a Black IPA, the love child of the Stout and American IPA. Its hoppy, roasty, dark in color, and light in body.
Check out the original recipe here!

I like what you're doing. Editing advice (if you're interested)... Use that couple of minutes of you just talking as voiceover for action shots. Brewing. Fermentation bubbles. Kegging. Pouring. Tasting. Drinking. Sharing at a party. Voiceovers work GREAT with content like this.

Thanks for the advice! I've been doing more and more voice over stuff lately, haven't considered going all the way yet

I didn't read through all the comments and maybe you figured out by now what sounds like astringency issues, but I've heard to minimize that you add your dark grains later in the mash say last 15 minutes. We are brewing this style this weekend and I plan on adding dark grains later. Great content btw. I followed after seeing you with claw hammer on their vid.

Their video is live on their channel give it a watch! Yeah I've read up on adding dark grain in the last 15m, this still would benefit from that and I'll definitely give it a go next brew!

In my limited experience (I've never done a real BIPA) it's an advantage to add the really dark malts very late in the mash, or even just before sparging.

I cracked one of my black IPAs a few days after bottling to give it a try. It was a solid beer, but like yours, I found the roasty, malty flavours were a lot less hidden than I'd hoped. In about a week, I'll be able to have it fully drinking ready, and I'm crossing my fingers.

I haven't brewed a black ipa in a while but now I want to. I like citrusy and resinous hops in the style personally and the recipe I have brewed several times was bittered with chinook with Amarillo and simcoe in the whirlpool and dry hop. I would skip the pale chocolate and cold steep a pound of midnight wheat overnight in cold water. That will give you color and a little roast. I'm definitely going to brew a black ipa now.

Hey, nice video. You need to be dropping the temperature to dry hop to reduce the hop burn, try putting together a cheap fermentation fridge rather than a jacket to ferment. Dry hop only when the beer is finished and at 14c, works a treat for me

Looks good. Appreciate you sharing what you like and don’t like. Recently did my first black IPA as well. Just kegged so can’t give feedback on taste but had only 3.3% midnight wheat and 2.6% carafa special 3 for the dark malts. 2% C80 and 2% carahell. 10% rye malt was a bit unique and the rest maris. I did a lot more hops on mine. Fist wort to 60IBU like your 60 min but 200g at whirlpool and 4 oz of dry hop for 2 days

Haven't had a black IPA in a long time. I remember them being light bodied, roasty and just enough bittering to call it an IPA. The hop burn will fall out if it sets for a while buuut keg space will dictate how long you hold on to it.
@JusBrewing
@JusBrewing 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the hop burn isn't a big problem, I definitely over did it on some of the specialties. It finished higher than I wanted but it also started higher too 🤷🏾‍♂️ gonna have to break out the ol pH meter next time 🤦🏾‍♂️
@TroubleBrewing
@TroubleBrewing 2 жыл бұрын
Black IPA is one of my favorite styles, a few things. Hop burn settles out! For me last time I got some bad hop burn I just let it sit in the keg for another week and it was much better the following week. Also I wanted to ask, how did your hop spider handle all those hops? I know whenever I do IPA's in the hop spider it gets clogged up QUICK, always have to watch that to get proper contact with the hops and the wort. May buy another hop spider for IPA brew days. Also for the roasty notes, 7% midnight wheat seems like alot. I think last time I used this it was like half that amount, especially if you are adding chocolate malt as well. Cheers!
@JusBrewing
@JusBrewing 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it was a bit much on the darker malts for sure, next time I'm dialing that back. The spider did ok I think, only 4oz went into so it wasn't too too bad but yes, having a larger one also helps 🤙🏾

How would you reverse the flavors so that you got the hops in intake and roast on the back end?
@JusBrewing
@JusBrewing 2 жыл бұрын
I didn't word that the best way I could've. What I meant was I wish the amount of the flavors were reversed in that there was more hop character than bitterness/roastiness opposed to the mild roast flavors and soft hop character. I'm sure there's a way to find out how to swap when the flavor is introduced, sounds like something you learn in a Brewer's course in college!
@codebowl
@codebowl 2 жыл бұрын
@@JusBrewing mis-worded, maybe, but it still gives me something to research, how to change when flavors are introduced to the palate.
