I was 36 weeks pregnant when I received a message from our bank that we had hit $0 in our checking account. (Insert swear words here.) Thankfully we have savings to tap into but we immediately had to switch around our lifestyle in order to take care of the needs of our growing family. We live in a home with other people to help keep the cost of rent low. We also made a series of other decisions that helped us provide for our new son. This video shares more personal details from our mini financial crisis and a bunch of our money saving tips. We were able to rebuild our savings account by roughly $6,000 in 6 months and this video tells you how we did that. I will also add here that our monthly bills are as low as possible, which helps minimize spending. I know money stuff can be scary but taking care of your new baby is possible no matter what amount of money you have in your account right now! As with anything else, I really believe that if I can do it, anyone can do it, because I am not a natural at this stuff. I believe in you. :)
Thank you so much for following along with us and I'll see you on instagram! @jess_hover

Thank you so much for this video. My baby is due in a MONTH and the topic of budgeting is so important! I recommend looking into Dave Ramsey's budgeting tools, podcast, and reading The Total Money Makeover. DISCLAIMER: Dave Ramsey is very religious (in case that's not your thing). My husband and I are not religious at all, but Dave's money saving/budgeting principles can't be beat. Because of his teachings, my husband and I have monthly budget meetings to keep each other accountable where we go over every charge and project what money we will need for expenses the following month. We also do not make large purchases (we are very frugal, so "large" is like anything over $50) without a discussion first. Talking about money regularly has vastly improved our marriage and brought us closer together. And, just generally, thrifting is fun! Our baby's nursery is so cute and the big items are mostly thrifted. :) Paint is cheap!

Another great video 👏 I have a 6 month old boy. Rewind 2 years and I had $30k in DUMB debt, similar to tax debt. Anywho, my husband and I paid that off in a year, we both had low income jobs. I took on air tasker gardening jobs along with my full time job, and so did my husband. I stayed late every day at work knowing that the sooner we paid off this debt, the sooner we would try for a baby. We lived pay check to pay check for 10 year, we were silly kids. Until I read Dave Ramsay's book, which really kicked me in the bum! I would listen to it at work to motivate me. Fast forward to now, and we are doing amazing! We had a lot of money saved before baby, and 6 months in we are still putting money into savings, not taking it out! And this is only on one income wage. We buy second hand, we live very modestly and we know the stress of having nothing, and we don't want that ever again. As a matter of fact when we had so little money, I went to buy some menstrual pads with our last bit of money, only to realise that I bought liners instead... And I literally had no money to go buy pads, so that was pretty tragic lol. I would take out loans that had 150 percent interest because I was just so desperate to make it look like we were doing fine and we could keep up our lifestyle. My point being, you really can turn things around if you learn how to. It's a learnt behaviour, and I was definitely not taught as a child!

YES!! It's like you're living in my head. I was also broke and poor while pregnant with our first. I started budgeting like it was my job, and secondhand baby thrifting around a new town and through mom groups on Facebook. The social media comparison is so real but I just throw my blinders on and look at my happy baby rolling around in thrifted hand me downs, listening to me read so many books given to us, sleeping in the crib that my friend's baby outgrew, and play with the few wonderful toys she has. WHAT?! So so so rich. And fancy $1 tacos? RICH.

My local church does a drop and swap every month for kids and baby items. All free!! I got a pack n play, brand new changing pad, wraps, and sooo many clothes. Look to see if you have anything around you like that. I have 6 months left and at this rate I won't have to purchase any clothes, burp rags, swing or bouncer. Only thing I'm going to get new is a car seat and stroller and those will be baby shower items

Our pregnancy was a surprise. The biggest expense for me is the birth itself. Carseat and clothe diapers are my must haves beyond that. Thank you for saying some things can be resold. I did not want a bassinet and my mom got one anyway. I'm not ungrateful I just want the things I do need like diapers..

What do you consider to be a quality stroller/car seat? I've looked at so many and waffled about which one I want so badly. I originally settled on the fancy version of the Chicco Bravo ("primo"), but now I'm on to the Graco Modes Nest DLX, because it turns into a bassinet (which makes me feel better about baby sleeping in it). That being said, I can't afford to drop $1k on an Uppababy and all its accessories. 🤷‍♀️

2 babies, both strollers second hand. Probably around 1000 dollar new, cost me under 200 dollar. Baby car seat for 450 dollar new, paid second hand 62 dollar. And all of this looked brand New. Only used for 1 child prior and such. Baby bed second hand, 150 dollar new. I paid 50. And 80 % of my daughter clothes we have inherited. And we do same towards others. Giving clothes and gear that dosent fit anymore. it's like an amazing cycle of giving.

Just letting people know you’re not supposed to buy a car seat second hand it voids insurance and unless you know the person really well that your buying from it could be deadly as there could be damages they haven’t told you about which could lead to them not working as they should in a crash.

This may be a little too personal for some but, could any mommas tell me approx. how much they spend a month on their child(ren)? Any minimalist mommas out there? I'm very analytically minded and would like to start saving and budgeting for a child in the future. Thank you :)
@NatalieJM4
@NatalieJM4 4 жыл бұрын
For the first 6 months of my daughter's life i spent about nothing on her. I got handed down enough clothes for three children, so i donated the extra. I cloth diapered (my stash is about $150) i breastfed so that was free. Everything else i got at her baby shower. After 6 months i spent $10-$20 a month on baby food. Now she's 3 and i pay about $100 on food a month for her and $400 for daycare. It really helps to accept hand me downs and do free or cheap activities. We're also minimalist so we're not getting things we don't actually need.
@Sincerelymakay
@Sincerelymakay 4 жыл бұрын
Laney'sMama Thank you so much for sharing! Wow, this is really encouraging for me. I’m also a minimalist. I was looking up what the average American family spends and I was blown away. I had a hard time believing that I would be spending that much with my lifestyle-I'm very detached from materialism. This sounds very reasonable to me as I plan to cloth diaper and breastfeed as well. Thanks, again!

The woman who runs the account, Merilee, posted (not too long ago) a list of side hustles that are pretty awesome and aren't things that would probably first come to mind. (Ex. Tutoring Chinese kids via Skype to help them with English. There is a whole company that does this.)

My husband and I studied money saving and investing tips from various books since we’ve been dating back in high school. One I will always recommend is Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. My parents were exactly like the “poor dad” of the book who always spent extra income on new vehicles and material things, while my husband’s family was poverty stricken and barely had a decent vehicle to get around in. I do our monthly budgets and managed to have around 18k in my savings by the time I was 21 (I’m 22 now). I highly recommend to everyone to do a monthly budget and see where you are spending unnecessarily. Don’t compare your spending to any else’s though. If your morning Starbuck’s coffee is a necessity to you and your routine then that’s fine factor it in though and see if you’re willing to compromise and cut it down to once or twice a week. You’ll save so much money in the long run. I am still buying our baby stuff secondhand except for a crib and car seat. We factored about 3,000 for everything just to give us wiggle room and splurge. (My insurance through my job covers my prenatal, labor, and delivery expenses so I did not factor any in.)This is also including our first month of childcare ($800) when I get off maternity leave. I am very thankful to my husband and I for working as a team at such a young age to set financial goals. We have our own home and have good reliable cars that if needed, we could pay one of them off now. Don’t fight over money. One member of the household should be in charge of the monthly budget and paying of bills. It makes life so much easier and we learned quickly it definitely stopped our bickering.
